Valentine’s day is very close and I this could be the perfect little gift. I’ll show you how I knit this pattern step by step and you can follow along.
This heart is knitted in the round on double-pointed knitting needles to get this nice puffy and seamless shape. It takes me about 1 hour to knit one heart.
Cast on 6 stitches leaving a tail of around 6 inches for weaving in later on.
Distribute those 8 stitches to 3 needles. . And then knit one round. This first round will be incredibly fiddly. But that’s quite normal.
And then, in the second round, it’s k1, kll, k2, krl. 2times. Here’s how to KLL: nimble-needles... and here’s my KRL tutorial: nimble-needles...
Then knit across two rounds . I distribute the stitches to 4 needles as I go. It’s both easier to knit with 4 needles in my opinion and you’ll achieve neater results.
And in the next round, the repeat is *k1, kll, k4, krl, k1*.
If you take a look at our heart in the making, you have 4 gaps between your needles. And along with two these two gaps opposing each other, you increase all the way to the top. And this will create a nice fold line for your heart.
From then you knit across those 16 stitches two more rows. And from here, you basically repeat those two rounds over and over again.
You may consider placing a stitch maker here on the sides, so you don’t miss the place where you need to increase. Once you increased to 28 stitches, you only have one knit row in between. But continue increasing until you have altogether 40 stitches on your needles.
Now, once finished increasing, you’ll have 4 needles and each holds 10 stitches. You need to put the needles on the second and third needle on a stitch holder. And then I distribute the remaining stitches to 4 needles - meaning 5 stitches on each.
And then knit across one round. Maintain a high tension as you bridge the gap.
And in the next round, you increase the way you did before again. So, a kll and krl two stitches around the sides. So it’s k1, kll, k8, krl, k1. And then, knit across one row, and increase one more time. You should have 28 stitches on your needles now. From here, you need to start decreasing with ssk and k2tog. So, Ssk, k10, k2tog, and repeat. Then knit two rounds.
And you continue decreasing like that until you have 8 stitches left. But be careful, the knit rows in between are gradually decreased. So, kindly check the pattern.
And once you have only 8 stitches left, cut the tail, and thread it on a tapestry needle, pull it through the remaining stitches and pull tight. And then sew over once and weave in the tail.
Now you finished one lobe of the heart and you need to start the second. So, distribute the remaining stitches to 4 dpns. Then, join in the yarn again and then knit across. You are basically repeating the same instructions.
The only big difference is the first row. So, as you come to the position of the gap, you need to slip the last stitch, pick up one loop here from the gap, and knit those two stitches together. This will prevent holes here. And then, do the same on the other side. Finish that round and then increase two more times just the way you did before. So, *k1, kll, k8, krl, k1*, and so on. I recommend you to weave in the tail right away.
And then continue knitting the pattern.
And when you have only 16 stitches left, take some toy stuffing and stuff it one bit at a time. You will have to overstuff a bit. The reason why you should be overstuffing a bit is that once you are finished knitting and closed this seam it will be very hard to add more stuffing-
Once you finished knitting the second lobe of your heart, weave in this tail on the inside. So, just oversew once, and then squeeze in a little knot and then hide the rest of the yarn inside.
Close the hole at the bottom by going through all cast of stitches, and then pulling it tight. Tie a little knot and then hide the rest of the tail inside.
And now, you can massage the toy stuff around a bit to get the perfect shape.

Make sure to comment in case you have any questions. Also, there's a second version available with less pronounced lobes on my blog!

Love your videos and your needles are always so beautiful. Been knitting for a long time and just recently started replacing my cheap hooks and needles with finely crafted tools and it makes the craft so much more of a pleasure! Thanks for your careful explanation

I was desperately looking to learn how to weave hearts without seams and I found your tutorial, I thank you infinitely! I would like to make them for the Christmas tree. Big hug!

I couldn't seem to start it well on three needles, but starting with 4 from the very beginning worked just fine for me. Much less fiddly for a newbie than I expected. Thanks for this adorable pattern, Norman.

Hi Norman, it is fun to watch someone else deal with fiddly starts🤣. I have also adopted your join in the round technique since I saw it on a previous video. I did another puffed heart that was two sides sewn together, I like this much better, thanks.

I can well imagine that. The first 2-3 rounds are always tough - doubly so if you are trying to record it 🙈 and happy to hear you like my version. Have you seen the alternative with less pronounced lobes on my blog?

Knitting with three needles works well if you put half the stitches on one needle and divide the remaining stitches between the other two needles. You always know where you need to increase and you can see where the round begins. Tip: keep the stitches scrunched together (on the needle with half the stitches) as that gives a better balance between the three needles when knitting. I love this little red heart - gorgeous!

That's a great tip for those who liked to knit with three needles. Personally I never do it but I know a lot of people learned it that way.

If you cast on 9 stitches, and joined them using the slipping method, then one needle will have only 2 stitches and you'll have only 8 stitches in total. Is that correct? :)

I'm finding it difficult to see the stitches. Even with my reader glasses on. Do you recommend a magnifying glass?
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 3 месяца назад
well, you might want to invest in a neck light. good lighting typically helps a lot. Other than that, I'd try to lean towards projects with a bigger gauge maybe?

@@NimbleNeedles I have a neck light. One you recommended at that. I was only wondering if you knew of a magnifier.
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 3 месяца назад
@@SandyDandyAdams No, I (luckily) do not need somthing like that (yet). So I really cannot recommend anything in that area. I know that some of the micro knitters and crocheters use it.

Your written pattern says to put 20 stitches from the third and fourth needle onto stitch holders while doing the first lobe, but it’s really the second and third needles correct? Otherwise the lobes are in the wrong spot.
@NimbleNeedles

Oh...it does? Gotta check. It needs to be the 2nd and 3rd. Thank you for catching that!
