I play an aggressive style of Spanish guitar fusion. I use a Godin. When my pick ups failed I heard about Paul and his pick ups. I ordered some and was pleasantly surprised. The one thing I love about them that the original Godin pick ups didn’t have is dynamics. I can play them soft and I can pick them hard and they respond accordingly. But most of all I like it when I do dig in with my pick to play my solos the pickups respond beautifully. The strings with the original Godin pick ups used to always pop out of their saddles because they could not handle the aggressiveness of my playing. That has not happened once with Paul’s pick ups.

I am glad you like your K&K. We sent out to make the acoustic guitar a stage instrument that can compete with bass, horns, drums, keyboards, at high vol. Because my guitars are known for this purpose I had to find answers. I could not rely on the old concepts to achieve what I needed. I am afraid that it was a waste of my efforts and time that I just did not put a Baggs or Fishman in my guitars and tell my performers that is as good as it gets. But the fact its, under saddle or contact pickups would be over whelmed on a loud stage. This is a label of engineering I hope you experience some day.

@@conecaster I have an Olson built in 1994. After some recent repair work was finally completed on it I decided to lose the original Baggs piezo (always problematic) and the AKG condenser that was kind of attached by velcro and install a new system. I am a HUGE PM fan and always very impressed with the sound of his amplified acoustics so I am very interested in what he chose. I want to create what I call a hyper-guitar with lots of pickup options: natural (95% if what I do), percussive (just for the option), sustaining for a super rich tone where just one note sings. I should give you guys a call.

Glad to see you join the GoAcoustic club, Walter. I beat you to it. Had mine installed in my trusty old Takamine 132C back in 2020. It has replaced my Godin Grand Concert as my main nylon string gigging guitar. Looks like Paul has updated the saddle since mine. My version has the individual piezo saddle pieces made my Graphtech, and I don't have the internal mic option. But I'm very happy with mine. As you say, the feedback rejection is phenomenal and the string to string balance couldn't be better. You can find my review on my channel.

Hey Don, great to hear from you. That’s awesome you also use the go acoustic, I’m loving it, best system I’ve ever used hands down! Mine doesn’t have midi connection thought, I think yours do, right? Great review you did. Cheers!
@DonMitchell50
@DonMitchell50 2 года назад
@@walterfingerstyle No, no midi connection, just the Graphtech piezo saddle pieces, similar to the RMC system. It outputs to a simple 1/4" jack. I do have a 3 band EQ preamp, however. Paul's first incarnation of the GoAcoustic used the individual saddle pieces. Now he has embedded the individual piezo pieces into a continuous saddle, rather than a single strip of piezo material like most of the other transducer pickups. The MIDI connection is in my Mitchell LP style steel string electric in which I have installed a Graphtech Ghost preamp and replacement Tune-o-matic bridge fitted with the individual piezo saddles. In that guitar I output through a 13 pin MIDI cable to a Boss GP-10 multi-effects processor to duplicate as close as I can the original guitar sounds of the classic rock, country and blues covers I play in my one-man-band show. I don't use synth sounds, rather modeling sounds of different guitars and amps...and alternate tunings such as open G for Stones tunes, DADGAD for Kashmir by Led Zeppelin and a 12 string for the vocal accompaniment to Hotel California.

Don, I just re watched your Go Acoustic review. Thank you for doing such an in- depth explanation of our system. Walter is not as familiar with the electronics mind behind Go Acoustic as you are. Ben has dedicated untold hours to perfecting the circuits that create the Go Acoustic capability. The concept of separate string inputs into a Preamp is not new but it was something I knew would control feedback and I saw no choice but to seek to provide a stage system with ultimate capacity in high vol. stage situations. It took me several years of searching for someone who could take the promise to a new level of result. I met Ben Shaw in the summer of 2015. He had recently Graduated from Belmont University as a mathematician but had spent most of his time at school working with Sal Greco at Oceanway studios. His background in pro audio and training in studio sound engineering bring mu h depth to the outcome. Ben took the individual input circuits and designed something beyond my imagination. In the summer of 20 I set out to design a single saddle pickup with 6 outputs. Since that time Ben and I have worked together to perfect this new pickup which is designed for a natural tonality while exploiting the wonderful qualities built into the preamp Ben so beautifully designed. Since 2017 when I asked touring Artist Peter White to test the first of these preamps on a live, high vol., stage, I knew the system had conquered the issues of feedback resistance. A guitarist no long has to fight their guitar to perform acoustically. You do not need a rack to model the sound and manufacture tone. The key is to provide the best output signal from the guitar. Everyone wants a great dynamic acoustic guitar. But now that dynamic can be taken to a new level of vol. and still retain the quality of a great acoustic guitar sound. Hi Walter, Great playing and sound! Im curious what you use for a live set up with the GoAcoustic? Amp, preamp? I've tried most systems and currently have a Barbera soloist in my nylon string which I pair with a Tonedexter preamp. As with most pickups/systems it has its pros and cons. I like the trebles but still too much quack in the bass. Very curious about this system and if you've compared it with the Barbera? Thanks!!!
@walterfingerstyle
@walterfingerstyle Год назад
Hi Kasey, my live set up is very simple as I plug in straight to an AER classic amp and depending on the venue size, I also use it as a DI. I haven't had a Barbera system in any on my guitars so I can't really compare it to the Go Acoustic Audio system, but what I can tell you for sure is that the GAA has the most natural acoustic like sound I've heard so far, with a great dynamics response and feedback rejection. If you reach out to Paul McGill at GAA he can certainly give you all the specs on the system. All best / Walter.

Hi Walter, very glad to see you doing a video like this. You have such a wonderfully deft touch on the guitar that seems to gently coax beautiful sounds from your instrument. My style is, at times, much more aggressive, which can cause a pickup’s purity to degrade to a dirty or distorted sound. Does this pickup hold up to a hard strummed attack as well as gentle finger picking? In other words, can it match a given instrument’s dynamic range? Thanks for all of your wonderful videos. They’re very inspiring!

Dear Glady, There are a few things I can share about what we are doing that will define your experiences as opposed to our system. 1) under saddle PUs are compressed and limited in output by compression. So when you play then hard they reach a limit and then begin to distort. The under saddle PUs require considerable gain to have adequate output signal. We do not use compression in our design which allows us to not need to boost the signal with gain to have a strong signal. 2) Our Go Acoustic PU output is great enough and the Input signal strong enough that we actually are cutting gain, so reaching a peak where distortion will occur is not very likely under high stress. This means the input signal is attenuated and distortion free headroom is very high. Also, if your playing style were an issue with over driving the signal going into the preamp from the bridge, you simply turn down the individual string vol. Pots which cuts the input signal even further, limiting any risk of over driving the output. A very aggressive latin plectrum guitarist installed our drop-in polydrive retrofit in his Godin multiac. He was skeptical at first thinking the system lacked dynamics for his aggressive style compared to the original system he was used to hearing. But after playing a loud gig he was completely amazed and said he was turning down the guitar at the board as he played harder through the gig. I think you will find the dynamic range capable of handling your style. It is easy enough on our system to limit gain. But to date it has never been an issue we have had to adjust for.
@walterfingerstyle
@walterfingerstyle 2 года назад
Glady, I'm quoting below a comment from Michael Battista on this video that might also help answering your question: "I play an aggressive style of Spanish guitar fusion. I use a Godin. When my pick ups failed I heard about Paul and his pick ups. I ordered some and was pleasantly surprised. The one thing I love about them that the original Godin pick ups didn’t have is dynamics. I can play them soft and I can pick them hard and they respond accordingly. But most of all I like it when I do dig in with my pic to play my solos the pickups respond beautifully. The strings originally in the Godin used to always pop out of their pick up saddled because they could not handle the aggressiveness of my playing. That has not happened once with Paul’s pick ups."

Is this pickup a piezo or different?
@walterfingerstyle
@walterfingerstyle Год назад
It is a piezo but it has individual string sensors built in inside the saddle, unlikely a regular piezo which has one sensor strip that lays under the saddle.

It sounds great. I'm sure the amp you play it through will make a difference. Can you tell us the cost?
@walterfingerstyle
@walterfingerstyle 2 года назад
I've played it through two different PA systems, an AER amp and also direct to the audio interface (on this video), they all sound amazing. The one I got installed sells for $395. Here's their website with all the info: www.goacousticaudio.com

I enjoy your playing, and have purchased your collection of hymn arrangements. However, that pickup still has that buzzy, piezo electric sound that I detest. I'm looking into the JourneyTek system, which is inexpensive and sounds EXTREMELY natural on a steel string, but I have yet to hear it on a classical...

You can plug the guitar to any device as you would with a regular electric guitar.

My friend and stage artist Peter White uses a pedal setup on stage often. He has used a fuzz tine with his guitar.

It may be even as good as the RMC system, which is very expensive

Hi Jim, this is a way more natural sounding system compared to the RMC with an incredible response and feedback rejection, I’m really impressed with this. system, worth every penny.
