You're correct Harri. That was Sammy Hagar on vocals. Sammy replaced David Lee Roth after the album 1984. There's been controversy among fans ever since about wether one version of the band was better than the other. For me, each version is great and I love them both for different reasons. I could go on and on, but I'll leave it at that.
With Michael Anthony doing that high harmony, VH still has a distinctive sound even though Sammy Hagar is singing. I'm with others that say I like both versions of VH for different reasons.
First time hearing this one by Van Halen! I thought they cranked out plenty of bad ass tunes with the Red Rocker. I saw Van Halen here in Austin back in '84. They were on their "1984 Tour". Roth was drunk and walking around stage with a bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand. He was forgetting lyrics all night long. He heard about it, too, from a music savvy Austin crowd. This was a banger and it has Hagar's and Van Halen's signatures all over it. Great selection and reaction -- thank you, Darren and Harri!
Saw them during that tour as well in Charlotte.. I still have the T-shirt to prove it! It was an epic concert. But I was a 15yr old kid seeing his idol, so of course my perspective is/was biased. 😁
@@Gashouse69 How cool seeing Van Halen as freshman or sophomore in high school! I was 16 in Feb of '75 when I saw Lynyrd Synyrd here in Austin. It was my very first concert to attend. Eight days later I saw the Doobie Brothers!
I just remember loving Sammy as the Red Rocker doing his own thing. He was awesome! I loved his stuff almost as much as Van Halen. We had both and times were great! Then, suddenly we didn't have DLRoth, meaning the VH sound changed, AND we no longer had the Red Rocker as his own entity. Sure they'd play some of his songs, but it was never the same for the sound of either. Lots of people were annoyed. That's when I started calling it Van Hagar. There were a few good songs, but for the most part, I tuned out. I wish you'd check out Sammy's song called 'Three Lock Box' if you can. Great channel!
The Sammy Hagar version of Van Halen, for the most part, is good in a Honda Civic way - reliable and satisfying. The David Lee Roth version of VH is like a Porsche - glitzy and delivers the speed, most of the time. In everyday life I prefer reliable but in rock music give me the Porsche every time.
