Space weather and our terrestrial weather are both ever-changing, especially during a very active solar cycle and the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere.
I went to a new location that I haven't visited yet for this Parks On The Air @ParksOnTheAir (POTA) activation from US-1743 White Clay Creek State Park @DelawareStateParks17 and US-0898 White Clay Creek National Wild & Scenic River @NationalParkService in Newark, Delaware. I am not affiliated administratively with the Parks On The Air organization, but a happy participant in the POTA program.
Q: What is Parks On The Air?
A: Parks On The Air (or POTA) for international portable amateur radio (ham radio) operations that promote emergency awareness and communications from national/federal and state/provincial level parks.
There are activators and there are hunters. Activators go into POTA approved parks, set up their amateur radio equipment and call CQ (CQ is an invitation for any amateur radio operators listening on that frequency to respond and make contact). Hunters will contact the activators and upon a successful contact, the activator puts the hunter into their logs that will be uploaded to calling area representatives who will then upload those logs to the POTA system. Hunters do not need to upload any logs.

Yes, the a take longer than expected. This wasn’t my first (almost) 2 hour activation. Wouldn’t have been stressful if there wasn’t a thunderstorm approaching. 73!

The Carpenter Recreation Area is on 896 before PA. I believe it was Walter Carpenter State Park originally until 1995. Thanks for watching & 73!

I didn’t think the storm would be an issue. Don’t remember if I knew it was coming or not. But once I noticed it I moved from the Nature Center to the Carpenter Recreation Area where it was shaded and I can work from the back of my SUV. I was watching the storm on Omega Radar. 73!

Nice activation. Space weather has been difficult lately. The location of the White Clay Creek National Wild and Scenic River - US-0898 always confuses me. It appears to be the entire water shed of the White Clay Creek. Is Pomeroy and Newark National Recreation Trail - US-9881 a new activation location? Same issue, what are the boundaries? I caught your arrow pointing at the Deer Park. I spend many nights there in my much younger days. Keep up the good work.

The only map I found of US-0898 shows the entire watershed. I believe it’s in one of the links I put in the description of the videos when I activate there. The Pomperoy & Newark Trail is new. It was added in October 2023. There are 2 spots in US-1743 & US-0898 that make it a 3-fer: along Creek Rd (drive in off of Cleveland Rd) into the park or go down Wedgewood Rd (off of New London Rd) to the parking area there. If you are QRP and can't hear other stations then set up a better antenna! lol All kidding aside I was running 700 watts in the shack into a 700' loop and was unable to be heard by some stations! 73

Yeah, my tractor trailer that hauls my 1000 jigawatt amp and 150 foot antenna mast had a flat tire so I couldn’t bring them along that day… 🤣 Thanks for watching & 73!
