I love the discussions of how VFX challenges were overcome in older films. Maybe one day you'll be able to chat to folks who did Terminator 2 or something else from that time period!
I was so happy that ILM cracked the code with simulated water for this film, because convincing-looking water always seemed like the Mount Everest of VFX. I believe from the very start, the production had a mandate to NOT use any miniature ship effects, because as every movie viewer knows, water does not miniaturize. (In technical terms, it always looks "a bit shit".) It must have been a monumental challenge for ILM, but it was worth it in the end.
Wow. such a treat. Been a fan of habib when i got into the industry. He was the quintessential VFX guru we all aspired to be after seeing those Alias Maya promo videos . Thank you all so much. b
He is amazing, a legend in VFX, still working, in fact in a few weeks we have another episode with Habib talking about his huge career and what he is up too now!
