Random fun facts: - My uncle went to rehab for alcohol in the 80s and when attending the first AA meeting he came to find Ringo casually (but low-key) attending as well - A couple aunts & uncles were at the Shea Stadium performance - One of my aunts won a "date with Elvis" in a radio contest - she basically just had lunch with him on the film set while he was doing one of his acting gigs Love the video once again Lars, the time & effort you put in is evident with every new post

The thought never occured to people that anything could match, muchless surpass, the Elvis on Ed Sullivan Show performance. That is part of the reason why The Beatle performance was unheard of. The pinnacle. Your Land is a happy place. Glad it is so welcoming, too.

I love the Beatles and have seen these videos many, many times. You breaking them down every few seconds and critiquing just adds to the experience and your enthusiasm is wonderful. Keep doing what youre doing and long live the Beatles!

I watched this show that Sunday night. I was 9. The next morning, at school, lots of kids were taking about it. Before you knew it, in the following months, up and down almost every street, usually in someone's garage, young kids were starting their own bands but could barely play any instrument. At least in my neck of the woods. (BTW: The Ed Sullivan folks sell a three-DVD collection of ALL The Beatles' performances. I have a copy. It's a great collection with great clarity. It contains full one hour shows, complete with commercials, which were one-minute long at most.)

February 9 1964 my 10th birthday, my hair grew long and taught myself to play guitar and at 69 yrs old I still play Beatles covers because they are the best especially for a solo act Yes, they change and or set the course for my life in many ways.

I was nine years old when i saw them on TV that evening (right after Lassie). They were so influential to me I started plying guitar and eventually learned all their songs.

thanks. This was fun! That Feb 23rd show was live, just pre-recorded but in front of an audience. At the time (I was a kid) I didn't notice that John's microphone was turned down so much. It was just thrilling to watch them. The sound was much better for the Miami show (Feb 16th). That "This Boy".....wow.

The 3 full Ed Sullivan Shows with The Beatles playing live were twice released on DVD. They are the complete shows that also include the commercials that waited! They can still be found. And by the way, I saw these shows as they aired. Yeah, I’m that old!

A bit of trivia: On the show the SAME NIGHT was the cast of OLIVER!, singing "Consider Yourself". The young actor playing the Artful Dodger in the show was DAVY JONES (yes, THAT Davy Jones), who watched the Beatles from the wings, heard the girls screaming and thought to himself, "THIS is what I want!" And of course, in later years the Beatles and the Monkees knew each other and hung out together.

On one New York radio station on December 31, 1963, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was "bubbling under" the top 20. The next day, on January 1, 1964, it was #1 on that station.

I am old enought to have seen this on TV when it was first shown at 7 years of age. It was my first time seeing them preform.

The first song they played on Ed Sullivan was All My Loving. I've always thought how tight they were to come out, and just hit that song so well. Wow. It starts with a little Paul vocals and then everyone has to start at the same time. That is the first song they play on live tv with millions watching. That was a big call.

I love all of them... My favorite George fact was from the Chris Odell book who was his assistant at the end of the Beatles and at the beginning of his solo career. She said he always smelled like sandalwood. As he walked down the halls of Apple there was a trail of sandalwood behind him. His clothes smelled like sandalwood, his car smelled like sandalwood... You always knew where he had been because you could smell the beautiful lingering fragrance.

Apple (the Beatles' Apple) released the dvd "The Beatles First U.S. Visit" back in the nineties. It has both of their 1st two Ed Sullivan appearances in N.Y. and Miami. It has the car rides and train rides in between. It plays like the inspiration for A Hard Day's Night. Really worth seeking out.

Lars,there was also another British Group that appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show many times called "The Dave Clark Five".They were second in popularity to the Beatles in 1964

Someone pointed out in another RU-vid video the Beatles’ distinctive individual styles: Paul wobbles his head from side to side, John bobs straight up and down, George kind of Jack-knifes from the waist and moves his whole upper body, while Ringo plays with his head tilted to the side.

He did wear contacts in NYC for Ed Sullivan. I met the optician who made his contacts in NYC. Same optician made my first contacts!

I woke myself up, at 10 months of age, to watch The Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show"! I sat on the sofa until they came on. Then I remember dancing! Then I had to sit down, or be put back in my crib. So, I sat on the couch for "Til There Was You" blowing bubbles and saying, "Georgeeee...every time the camera showed George Harrison! He was my favorite!!! Myneighbor, Annie loved Paul and my Mom loved John!

Out and proud Beatle fan going on sixty years now.I'm sixty three now. I saw them on Ed Sullivan at 4 years old because my sisters had to see them. I didn't know anything about them, but instantly fell in love with them. To this day, I am a hardcore Beatles fan and my sisters don't even listen to them anymore. New to your channel (been binging on reaction videos to my two favourite groups ever - Queen and The Beatles - for a couple of weeks, but only just found you!). Your passion for the group shines through! The Beatles changed the world of music in a way not seen since Mozart revolutionised classical music. I was brought up on The Beatles by my dad and I have loved them ever since (I'm the wrong side of 55 now!). The Beatles are so different to Queen in some ways, but the same in one very important way - the way they are able to take the recorded tracks and reproduce them almost exactly on stage, live. (I would suggest Queen has the edge there, but only because we have no idea how The Beatles later songs would have sounded on stage due their 'retirement' from live performances in 1966). Also, separated as they were by 10+ years in terms of their live performances, both groups had no auto-tune, and no in-ear apparatus to help them hear the rest of the group on stage, and yet they are both spot-on perfect in terms of melodies and harmonies and keeping time with the drums and bass. The Beatles had it worse because they simply couldn't hear themselves because of all the screams (tech had moved on a bit for Queen in that respect!) but their secret rhythm weapon was Ringo (the left-handed drummer playing a right-handed kit which gives the best sound ever!). Ringo had the equivalent of perfect pitch - perfect rhythm. Almost every performance of every song live, was at the same speed (there are some exceptions, but not that many) and he gave them their solid feel on stage. (Queen's Roger Taylor was a huge admirer of Ringo's drumming style). It's well-known that Ringo said he often had no idea where they were in a song unless he looked the body language of John, Paul and George in front of him, and how they were moving! That's a long post, apologies! But (on a dull, damp 'summer's day' in Jersey finding your channel has cheered me up! (By the way, that's the the original Jersey! The one that's an island only 9 miles long by 5 miles wide, in the English Channel, one of the UK crown dependencies, only 14 miles from the coast of France! The state of 'New Jersey' is named after us! 😊)

Groundbreaking it was. They always seemed to hit it out of the park when they were on the BIG stage and at the time that they most needed to hit big. This was innate. They were ready for this night and delivered the goods. Everything that you say is relevant and spot on. Your comments during the video are excellent. We can see that you have screened the show quite a bit. The John Lennon - best rhythm guitar player is spot on. He was and this is an underrated part of their sound both then and as it moved on. The Ringo stick hold - yes! He hadn't even been in the band two years (a year and a half actually) at this time. Good comments on George here. A few things - George was just coming off of an illness where his sister was there to nurse him back. He wasn't at the rehearsal - a stand-in was. The first evening performance was a bit Paul-centric to ease the viewing audience in. A pop musical revolution had taken hold of America and the world after this. It changed everything moving forward. And yes, we did watch the Sullivan show, as it happened, on a tiny b & w tv screen at my grandfather's farm. EVERYONE was talking about this the next day at school.

Always loved the set order choice for the 1st show. With 2 songs in the Billboard top 10 you'd normally open with one and have the other close the second slot. But no, let's start with an album track that hardly anybody will have heard. Confidence or what!

Nice job. Unless I misunderstood, I'm not sure what you mean about subsequent Beatles performances on Sullivan being edited/spliced. They appeared live on Sullivan in August or September '65 performing "Help", "Act Naturally", "Yesterday", "I Feel Fine", "I'm Down" and perhaps one other song. After that, they did appear via video lip-synching to "Paperback Writer" and "Rain".

I saw that show as it happened on Ed Sullivan, Feb 9th 1964.

Paul later said they were nervous as hell. But being the pros they were by this time, they made it thru their six songs like kings.

When Ed Sullivan went to color in the fall of 1965, one week after the Beatles' final live performance on the show, the audio became much more dynamic, too, at least to my ears. Sadly, the Beatles missed out on both improvements.

Watching that performance as a 6 yr. old gave me my first bout of tunnel vision..

Paul said they would not go to America without a number 1 and that is 100% TRUE.

I got the Sullivan shows as a (bootleg?) VHS tape in 1988 and wore. It. Out.

Your stats were probably correct, but I remember the Beatles appearances. There were only three TV stations in most towns, ABC, NBC and CBS. The audience was very limited, as there wasn't very much by way of competition. In our house, my father was a rock DJ at the time, and forced us to watch LOL. Hey, there was nothing else good to switch to. Not putting you down, just stating facts. The viewership was so high, because there was just nothing else on, basically. That's even *IF* you had a TV. Our household only had one TV (and one phone! WITH a party line OMG) - as opposed to (by the beginning of the 80's) we had a TV in every room, and dozens of cable channels.

One correction: The Sullivan Show went to color in early September, 1965. The did the last black and white show the week before. Not 1964. (I was there. I'm old. LOL.)

Their first performance was seen by 73 million Americans. On the same show, future Monkee Davy Jones was in a scene from Oliver Twist.

I watched all 3 performances. I remember so many 'adults' critized their 'long hair'. Here are 4 guys in suits and ties and they couldn't have been more proper. I regret never seeing them live.

Really love your enthusiasm for The BEATLES, Lars. It helps me to revive mine a littlrle, so thank you for that. And just in case you didn't already know, there's a killer DVD collection with original conmercials included called "The Four Complete Historic Ed Sullivan Shows" (almost said shoes...) that seriously gets it right. And not only that, it also reminds you just how mind-numblying boring the show could be sometimes when you were stuck watching the jugglers, the dancers, the puppets and the clowns and really just wanting to see The Turtles or The Electric Prunes.

I really doubt John was wearing contacts. Even Paul talked about John's nearsightedness

I was one of those 73 million. I was just 8 years old and 3 weeks. I became a music teacher most likely because of the night. Plus I didn't rob anybody, thus contributing to the lower rate of crime while the Beatles were performing lol. Davy Jones, later of the TV band the Monkees, was on that show in the excerpts of t...he production of the musical Oliver, playing the Artful Dodger. He saw the Beatles, and saw the screaming girls, and said "That's for me" and 2 1/2 years later he was on the Monkees TV show. By April 1964, the Beatles held the top 5 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, NO ONE has ever done that since....

Here in Sweden, the Beatles honoured us in 1963 with a national tour on their first gigs after their breakthrough with their Swedish friends Jerry Williams and the Violent. They are a Swedish band who got to know the Beatles in Hamburg when the 2 groups played at the Kaiser Keller and Star Club. George Harrison played lead guitar with them and he actually promised to join them, if the Beatles broke up?

Still the top selling musicians of all time.

What you said about the Ed Sullivan show being colorized the next week after the Feb. 23rd performance is incorrect. In August, 1965 the Beatles did their North American tour, and their first stop was to do a taped appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, to be broadcast in America on Sept. 12, 1965. That broadcast was in black and white. The Ed Sullivan show would go to being a color broadcast in September of 1965. Had The Beatles returned to Ed Sullivan in 1966, they would have performed in color, but negotiations between manager Brian Epstein and Ed Sullivan broke down that Ed didn't get The Beatles on his show in 1966.

I was sixteen when this aired. Their music was happy and exuberant. It made you feel good. You are quite correct, this performance was a game changer in the world of pop music. It signaled the start of the "British Invasion"

Indeed @larsland, I fully concur, John Lennon is one of the best rhythm guitarists ever. End of discussion. Thing is though, although George Harrison's lead playing is just something else, (as is Paul's: see Taxman lol). John Lennon could also totally hold his own, as it were, playing lead on occasion. His lead playing on Get Back for example, is f@rking excellent - as is his playing on the infamous 'guitar battle' on the The End where he throws in that deep, guttural dirty blues riff and those higher, manic Chuck Berry-esque attack riffs as perfect counterpoints to George's soulful bending and wailing and Paul's more staccato lead playing. He also brings the battle to a perfect end by exercising 'a less is more' approach by simply going apeshit with a beautfully minimal and repetitive riff that sounds so completely spontaneous it breaks into your skull like a burglar with charm and says 'hi'. P.S. The offer of marriage still stands. Just sayin. No pressure. x

It is true that the Beatles had not wanted to go to America (although George went once to see his sister) until they had a #1 hit, in light of the poor success of previous English acts in America, however, based on what you've said, it ultimately wasn't the deciding factor. Oh, my parents, my grandfather, and I did watch that broadcast of the Ed Sullivan show specifically to see the Beatles. I often watched it anyway. Brian Epstein asked Sullivan for "top billing," which Sullivan granted but found peculiar, since it was an issue for live performances, but not much for TV shows. My recollection is that this was the time when contact lenses had just started being available. If John had them, they were made of glass, since soft lenses were many years in the future.
