I don't think people give Peter Shilton enough credit. People continue to remember him for being out-jumped and outworked by Diego Maradona but the man has played more competitive matches than ANY other player having had a 30 year career, he has the most England caps and a two time European Cup/Champions League winner. One of our best ever goalkeepers!
For me one of the best keeper's around when i was growing up in the 60s 70s & 80s and that is why i went on to be a goal keeper for my school and club..
you all prolly dont give a damn but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can give me
A great keeper had it all for a keeper , I didn't appreciate him when I was growing up I would have studied him more . Only pity was his gambling addiction I hope he's over that
31:17 ‘Something told me that, you know, a change might do me good.’ Something like your gambling addiction or your drink driving conviction or cheating on your wife?
Given his club form, it was very difficult to justify not restoring Ray as England No.1, at the latest, after he’d recovered from the injuries he suffered in early 1984. In truth, also based on club form, he should have been the first choice goalkeeper in Spain in 1982 after Spurs’ truly amazing season in 1981-82, which just would not have been possible if Ray had not joined from Liverpool. Spurs were league title contenders in 1984-85 and 1986-87 as well, when Ray’s importance to the team only increased. Defensively Spurs has never managed to be as credible as they were in the eighties after Ray retired in 1988.
A decent goalkeeper. Brian Clough rated him. Brave. Remembered for less good performances like Poland 1973. Italia 90 off his line when the free kick ball was deflected by Paul parker and spiralled over him into the net. Penalties too old to save them
Shilton and Clemence 2 huge champions, I can say 2 things, physically Clemence taller and maybe he saved a few more penalties, maybe if he had been in 1986 the evil dwarf couldn't have scored because Clemence was taller ... their names are engraved in my heart forever!
You call Diego an evil dwarf as if the English have a monopoly on fair play. Terry Butcher & Terry Fenwick should have been shown the red card . On numerous occasions Maradona made them look average and they responded with their usual crass thuggery. England have a typical loser complex. If it isn’t “we wos robbed” than its “coming home” when in fact it went to Rome instead. Grow up. England would not have won the 1986 World Cup. Michel Platini’s France or West Germany’s Karl Heinz Rumminger would have seen to that.
@@MrJeepsters In fact, it was Shilton who was particularly known for his extraordinarily long arms. It has been mentioned many times he has approximately two inches longer arms than average for his height. Don’t know about Clemence.
Was one of the 28 that travelled to Mexico for the 1970 World Cup finals but did not make it to the final 22. Peter Shilton who won a record 125 England caps made his international debut at Wembley against East Germany in November 1970. But as Gordon Banks was the first choice a young Peter Shilton only kept goal for England occasionally. When Banks was involved in a nasty car accident in October 1972 and lost sight of one eye,Shilton seized his chance to be the England's first choice custodian. But still he had to with Liverpool's Ray Clememce breathing down his neck. And there was too Phil Parkes. But of all his international matches, the most disappointing was the 1-1 draw with Poland at Wembley in a crucial World Cup qualifier with Poland on 17 October 1973. Shilton had also featured in the earlier World Cup qualifier with Poland at Katowice on 6 June in which England lost 2-0.Shilton failed to stop Jan Banas and Wlodek Lubanski from scoring. But that was forgivable as it was Bobby Moore's defensive lapses that attributed to those two goals scored against England. But five months later Peter Shilton was partially to blame as he came out too early to prevent Jan Domarski from scoring but instead allowed the ball to slip under his body. That goal killed off England World Cup hopes of playing in the 1974 World Cup finals. And in the next World Cup qualifier the same thing happened as England were denied by Italy.By this time Shilton and Clemence were rivals vying to be the England's first choice. But England's 2-0 defeat to Italy meant that for the second successive time they failed to make it to the World Cup finals. In the 1982 finals England qualified but failed to progress beyond the second round again being denied by West Germany. Shilton at 41 featured in his last World Cup in which England finished a creditable.England's 2-1 defeat to Italy in the third place playoff was Shilton's last for his country. He had won 125 caps which is still a record.
@@MarioRodriguez-fo9ly that third place play off with Italy in the 1990 World Cup finals was Peter Shilton's last ever for England and his 125th England cap which is still a record to boot and beat.
Yes I hope so to and he had the Right attitude in Regards Respect in other words he would treat other People as he and his family would expect to be treated and Speaking as a 65 year old Man I have got exactly the same view as Respect works both ways
Fabulously overrated, cost England in the world cup 86, Robson should have dropped him after that but didn't then costs England again in 1990 against Germany, and in euro 88 stood there like a complete lemon when Ireland scored. And as for the penalty shoot out in 1990, the balls had hit the net before the clown had even dived.
Nice guy good goale but l will always remember him for the two mistakes home and away against Poland 73 world cup qualifiers, save one of the and we are in 74 world cup finals?
I'm surprised a big club never signed Shilton. I know he had a very successful spell at Forest but they were never a big club in terms of stature. I would have thought clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham would have tried to sign him after his time at Forest. I'm sure Everton were happy with Neville Southall but if Shilton was as good as people say then he would have improved the other sides I mentioned.
I always felt that Shilton was overrated, but your point about "big clubs like Manchester United" doesn't really make sense. While Shilton was winning European Cups and League titles at Nottingham Forest, Manchester United only won FA Cups in the 1970s and 1980s. They didn't win any First Division titles from the late 1960s through to 1994.
Bits that were overlooked or edited out: "I was addicted to gambling, but I was shit at it, so all the other players used to queue up to play me at cards". "In 1980 I was caught with my pants down in a car in a quiet country lane with someone else's wife. It was her husband that caught me, so I drove off in a hurry and crashed into a lamp post and was fined for drink driving. All that, and yet people still say I am boring!"
Shilton tried to get off with my Aussie girlfriend when the team were in Melbourne in the early 80,s,it was in a pub called the Windsor Castle which in those days was the pub that all the UK lads drank in,but he had no luck as she didn,t have a clue who he was, plus his nose was out of joint when she knocked him back
shilton never in Clemence class, He made an horrendous mistakes against Poland, Ray Clemence should have been in that side , Shilton against Argentina too slow Maradona , 1990 no spring in his step Germany free kick deflected.
1986 "I was outjumped by a 5 foot high Argentinian and England were knocked out of World Cup." 1990 "German free kick takes a deflection and loops over my head. Lineker equalised, but England were knocked out of World Cup, as I didn't save enough penalties."
@@edmundpower1250 No, not an imbecile. Just pointing out that Shilton has arms too and is a foot taller. He was slow off his line, jumped as if his boots were made of lead and yet he still seems bitter about it 34 years later.
@@kingarthurusatenniscoach1415 I have no doubts it is your humble or honest opinion about you having a preference for Clemence BUT Clough would of picked Shilton over Clemence hence his best in the world comments about him. I agree Ron Greenwood was a poor indecisive manager who was only appointed because he fit the "PC" remit of the FA, where Clough was his own man and would of done it his own unique way if they would of had the good sense to appoint him over Greenwood.
I agree with you Brian Clough was talking saying that Peter Shilton was streets ahead of ray clemence on every aspect of goalkeeping I didn't agree with Brian Clough even though a great manager what he said ithink Peter Shilton and ray clemence were equal if Peter Shilton was better ray clemence only a fraction better 2 great goalkeepers England were lucky to have them both I'm a Liverpool as well
Should of stopped playing after 82 world cup , in the 60s Banks was best mid 70s to 80 Shilton and Clemence , then 80s to 94 it was Southall , then schmeichel so on ....
Totally overrated, england would have won alot more with clemence in goal.i always rem bobby robson saying to him in the 1990 pen shoot out "just save one"that was the problem he didnt and was never any good at saving penos.went to punch the maradoona goal😀 he was a disaster!!
Without doubt the most blameless keeper who ever spoke ! As conceited as they come ! Cost England a World Cup '90 final place because he couldn't jump higher than a doormat ! 🇮🇪
