Petula Clark really changed the world actually with her art. When she sang she really wanted it to reach the ears of the world. For me as a kid in third grade when “Downtown” was a hit, it kept me sane during a very rough family life. I loved her then and I love her now and I’m so happy she is the person she is. Her art translates universally into beauty and life. I thank her for it
Petula Clark:WHAT A PHENOMENAL CAREER. NO ONE that I can name as this on their CV. Child Star, Superstar Pop Star,Film Star,Star of Las Vagas and Broadway. Songwriter.Musical Theatre Actress. Her UNMATCHABLE voice is a crystal clear, pinpoint accurate with every note. The way she interprits her songs is in just another class of it's own. There is not a type of song that she can not sing. So much so that she can take a classic song by someone else and do her version of it and from then on she totally owns it as well. Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
Oh! My! There is not any female singer past or present that I have loved more than Petula Clark. The first time I heard "Down Town" I became a life long fan. There is never a song on any of her albums that I don't like. There is just nothing she cannot sing. I actually got to see her on stage in Las Vegas during the 80's. It was a magical night for me. I had a wonderful seat and I wanted to get up and tell her how special she was, but of course did not do that, just wanted to. I was a little surprised at how tiny she was. I have asked my family to play Down Town at my service when I pass, that is how much I love it. God Bless her! Such talent God gave her, and she used it so wisely.
@desertwind: Thank you very much for your truly wonderful comment about Our Special Lady Petula Clark. I love what you say about a lady who I have always loved and admired all of my life. THE TRUE STANDOUT SUPERSTAR OF THE SIXTIES and THE Greatest Female Vocalist/Entertainer of ALL TIME. Petula Clark CBE.
Petula Clark's talent is unrivaled as an artist of many aspects but it will always be the fearlessness that I heard in her songs and the way that she delivered them with everything on the line that will continue to inspire me.
Petula Clark, una delle voci che incanta l'anima sensibile musicale, che ti fa compagnia come l'acqua di ruscello di montagna, ti rilassa, il migliore antidoto per chi soffre di solitudine. Grazie
An awesome lady , the Brits would never let her grow up they loved the little girl in the Huggets and they wanted her to remain that sweet little English rose ,so she went to France to grow up and she became an international singing star around the world , but I dont think we ever forgave her . Its time to recognise her for what she is a singing legend , we have rightly honoured Andrews , Bassey , and Lynn now its time to do the proper thing and add Petula Clark to that list before its too late .
She was my first crush as a kid. I have never understood why their is no "Dame Petula Clark". She has had a long and blessed life. Thank you, Petula Clark.
@@michellelassiter268 She has done vasts amounts of charity work all over the world. Maybe of course Little Britain only thinks you're doing good if you do it in England. . Bassey lives in Monaco and Switzerland. Many people given these silly titles live in America. I suspect that she has been offered a damehood and like a lot of people doesn't like honours that change your name. Sir Cliff Richard; Sir Tom Jones, Dame Julie Andrews. They are singers!
I was only s toddler when this song released and from ever since this voice brought melody to my ears madam Petula you rank high amounst the very best singers of all times
In the USA, we had no idea that Petula had already had a successful British career since childhood. To us, she was brand new, and another part of the British Invasion. In fact she was not only far more experienced than the rest of the British performers, she was actually older than them as well.
Wow, fascinating! I always thought Petula Clark was just a 3-hit wonder my Mum listened to as a teen in the 60s. I’d no idea her career began as a young child and that she’d entertained the troops in WWII.
@@Isleofskyeand Fairly Vague. You're right, she has had a colossal career all over the world, and was part of America's British Invasion of the 60s. In many ways she was the soundtrack to my life (I'm 63 now). When TV re-started after 6 years of WW2 she was one of the very first faces seen on the opening schedule of 1946 - check out the BBC TV story and you'll see her name there, though you may not recognise this young girl! This was the time when the word Television was born. Here she is 75 years later she still tours and records her own freshly-written songs.
I bought " Sailor" in 1964 plus her well-known hits like "subway" grass" "downtown" but one of my favourite 20 songs on the all-time list is "This Is My Song" by Charlie Chaplin(born in my road in S E London ). Me and My Mum went to the Victoria Theatre in S W London and parked right outside the Theatre(different times ) 40 years ago to see Pet Clark in The Sound Of Music. Good Luck, My Friend...
Miss Petula Clark, Wow what a talented, bueatiful, sexy, lady. I first heard her singing, oh possible as early as 64 or 65 there or about. Two older sisters, five cousins in the states, 78lps, 45's , the Am-Fm radios. Her talent was very present, both in Canada @ the USA. Became charmed by her voice then, and still love,- crave it today. Just this morning I watched her tribute too Miss Karen Carpenter, oh how touching, @ loving. So then I found her Interview - documentary, so I just had to watch it. Thank you so very much. Rock @ Sing on "PETULA". God Bless.
We just loved watching the Petula Clark Show. It brought back many fond memories. Petula's voice is so beautiful and a wonderful gift to listen to. Thank you all for putting together such a fantastic gift for all. John and Byron
The iconic, DOWNTOWN features the best middle eight in history, those wonderful horns that just tear through you and excite every cell in the body. Haven't heard anything that comes close since.
I can still recall the first time i heard DOWN TOWN.It was December 10,,1964.we in the middle of a force10 grigale storm in the Mediterranen sea on board H.M.S. Surprise.Along with this song another three songs i remember well, they I COULD EASELY FALL /Cliff ,I FEEL FINE /The Beatles and Glad All Over /Dave Clarke Five
I have loved her since I was a child, going through my parents' albums and finding her. I still have those albums and she sounds completely timeless! I think that "Where Did We Go Wrong" is my favorite song from her.
Petula Clark:Where Did We Go Wrong. WOW!!!! And I really mean WOW!!!! This is Petula singing beyond brilliant, beyound sensational and beyond phenomenal. How Petula holds on to the notes of this gem of a song is beyond words. Mega-Talented, Unique, Unmatchable and Unsurpassable in everything she has done in her beyond amazing career. And she has remained all the way through her career a very down to Earth, friendly and very approachable and appreciated lady who loves her fans just has much as we love her. I LOVE YOU PETULA.❤ Petula Clark THE TRUE STANDOUT STAR OF THE SIXTIES and beyound.....
What a remarkable life. Though obviously she still has her fans, she has been largely forgotten by 2018. Clearly her life stands on it's own merits and nobody is super-famous forever. She comes across as a very well adjusted & down to earth person. It's perhaps this lack of a wounded soul & the ensuing drama & pathos that makes for a less spectacularly tragic legacy, but certainly a much happier personal life for her. A life well-lived is it's own reward and needs not public validation.
Love the nice pieces with Jackie Trent commenting. After all Jackie was a great song writer and wrote some hits for PC. I still love Jackie Trent over all other singer/songwriters of the 60s. God Bless Jackie she lost a lot, after marriage to TH.
Astonishing. As a 60+ yr old American, amateur musician, growing up with top 40 radio, and later, becoming a Broadway musical fan, living in NYC for 30 years, I was well aware of her diverse talents. And I am truly a Tony Hatch fan for all his work with PC and other artists, as well as his TV themes ( I also am a British cult TV fan, during the Lew Grade/Gerry Anderson, etc. era). To me, Tony is another Burt BACHARACH, Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro. But I had no idea.... NO IDEA...that before PC hit us, she was a veteran seasoned professional already a star of TV, screen etc. No clue. Wonderful show.
Loved this thank you for posting. Of all her songs I have, it always seems like She gives advice on downtown and don't sleep in the subway I feel like she is a therapist. I get a kick out of her and I love her with all my heart
Petula Clark made her first public performance as a very young girl at the masonic Lodge in Rhymney Gwent UK. She lived during the war in a small mining village called Pontlottyn in the Rhymney Valley as evacuee from the bombing in WW2
Wow...what a wonderful show. Thanks so much for posting it. Ironic in that I'd never seen Jackie Trent interviewed about Pet before, and to see it here just a week of so after Jackie's death. Also very surprised to see so many clips of Pet's mid 60's BBC show, 'This is Petula Clark', as I'd heard all the tapes had been erased years ago. I so envy Dusty's legion of fans who have so much of her BBC shows from the 60's, yet for Petula, the BBC supposedly have nothing.
The first song I ever remember is "Downtown." It was the only word I understood in the song but it shaped me forever--I knew at the age of 3 that the city was the place to be and I should be an urbanite.
She puts energy in and the audience gets energy out. Like a BP Clark Superstar from the 60s. Always got a nice little deal at the Clark Gas Station. Healthy Emotions are in focus and Ms Clark has a position there. This is good for me even at this late date. Good for my health, Brian~Koller
Este documental es un gran tributo a su gran carrera como cantante y un reconocimiento a su legado musical que nos ha dejado. Honor a quien Honor merece, Gracias por todo ello.
It's crazy how so few British people can adopt a convincing American accent, usually barely even managing to sound like a 1970s Radio Caroline DJ. Until that is you ask them to sing. Then, even with an English song they will adopt a ludicrous, idiotic American accent for no good reason. Competing with it now of course are halfwits adopting a Jamaican Yardie accent, which is like having a colossal revolving sign on top of your head flashing the word MORON in 6' tall neon lights. That accent is why the word 'wanker' was invented.
The first time I heard 'Downtown' I fell in love with the song, it was just around the time of Expo '67 in Montreal and I lived in Montreal, a teenager who had just witnessed the Beatles performing Live at the Montreal Forum in 1964. Downtown, fit perfectly into the mood of the day and the times. So I took interest in Petula Clark from a distance, and then she came out with more and more hits, which I loved, and suddenly times and mood changes, no hits from Petula, other interests, she faded away. She wasn't lost on me though, and I find myself oddly enough, gravitating towards her again and again through the years wanting to hear her sing one of her songs, and then all of the memories start rushing back in, of the era of my youth. Today as an adult, and older man, I still gravitate to her vocal signature. She's hearty in her delivery and impressionistic in her story telling. I do play her songs, and likely will play a few of hers again tonight. Love you Petula Clark, you're an inspiration to us all.
She’s 87 now in 2019 and the fame won’t go on forever, Downtown wasn’t one of my favourites, I Know a Place’ was in 1965 when she was 30 and I was 9 - 53 years ago.
I love Petula Clark.I grew up with Downtown my mom played it and played the whole album.Iwas hooked and AT the age of 12 I bought her every hit.My girlfriend and I would sing Downtown I. fro t of our neighbour.😁💋💓🎵🎶🎤
I get the feeling Petula is a very private person who fights to be 'the star' that people expect to see, but absolutely loves to get home, kick off her heels and be a real human being again. But the fact that all her life she has done this amazing act is testament to her extraordinary strength. I really feel that she has traded so much to bring her beautiful music to people that if anyone deserves her incredible life of success it is her. What an incredible lady, and although while very young she became an international celebrity, favoured particularly by European viewers and listeners, Britain - and especially Wales - will always feel immensely proud of their most lovely daughter. And christ-on-a-bike, what a voice!!!
Petula is still singing and touring. This month(June 2021) she as recorded a song with long time friend John Williams on his brand new album. The song Petula sings on is a very, very good song called "New Flag" and yes you have guested right Petula is still a FANTASTIC and BRILLIANT singer. She ALWAYS will be. She puts in a great performance on the video which can be seen now on You Tube.
Johnny Harris ..and finally I can say it directly to you -your Petula 71 album is so innovative and classic pleasure to the ears and soul! thanks - still have If and I know what love is about, the world song, tears of a clown and other greats at my ipod walking my dog.. cheers from Tel-Aviv
A brilliant female singer and there will be no female singer to better her. Fabulous voice and modern artists should take note of her brilliance and longeavaty . A child female entertainer during the 2nd World war. Fabulous lady with a voice of an Angel. Her songs are so clear to understand unlike some modern entertainers . Great singer
As far as going downtown, years ago it was so much fun to get dressed up to just go shopping at stores, and smaller fun shops, even the five and dime, and get lunch, or in the evening to a good movie and dinner, or to a concert or play or go dancing and get an ice cream. We used to be able to go window shopping, and just look at the new styles of clothes, but not buy. Some cities have peaceful places, such as parks that are safe where you can stroll. In Salt Lake City, we have Temple Square with all of the pretty flowers, trees, fountains, pools, statues, visitors centers, and sometimes very uplifting concerts and plays. And there are four places to eat, from casual soup, salad and sandwiches at the “Nauvoo Cafe” to a very nice place called “The Roof” on top of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. I think you need a reservation, There are other special activities and places there too. Up on top is also “The Garden” to eat at, and a building or two away is the Lion House Pantry where you can get very nice food, served cafeteria style...I got prime rib one Christmas. During the day, there is the Family History Library, the Church Museum, the Church History Library....and you could spend a full day or two and not see or do everything. At different times of the year, there are three places for concerts, and a theater for special productions. puls there is a theater to go to learn more about The Church and the gospel.
@Chatham43: That's sad to learn. But Jackie and Tony making their home here in Australia seems to be a growing trend, Leo Sayer did it, I wonder if anyone else did.
I have 2 or 3 Petula Clark albums but they are in storage, my record player having broken yrs ago. Sang along with them, love her voice! Thanks for this!
Petulant Clark was a big hit with me when she sang DownTown. It was a theme song for me because I was one of the Terminal Tower boys back in a day in Cleveland. It brings back tons of memories...
I never thought Downtown was about sex... I resent that kind of “of COURSE the lyrics are about SEX!!” comment. It’s a pretty song and sweet optimistic lyrics.
I never thought of the song being about sex either. The song is about lifting yourself up and getting out from the 'gloom' of life and making the best of what you have after a week of hard work. Enjoy your life!
Disgusting...signs of the times...thanks for refuting that. Downtown was exciting back in the day. Lots of activity and life in the city!! I feel bad for New York...I will pray for them. My cousin had to leave a great job and friends, and he and his cute dog came back to his hometown.
My head of year who we called HM was a complete utter fan and when he played certain songs in assembly in the mornings would give us the clue as to what type of mood he was in ...Brentside high what a brilliant place xx
