Song was released in 1993 and the group was from LA not Nyc but get your point and your totally right Hiphop had more of a jazz and soulful fusion in the 90s even though I think nowadays Hiphop is a little more diverse as there are more genres of rap now but I think the style your more displeased with is the Trap and gangster rap which is predominating the industry now but you still have some vintage rappers like J Cole and Kendrick to name a few

Hip hop in the golden era was way more diverse than today's music from the east coast to the West to the dirty south . Hip hop now isn't the way it used to be when they asked to care about rhymes making a story having the records match the beat . It's more about getting people who don't give a s*** about real hip hop it's like it and appease them

There were different kinds of hip hop then and there different kinds now. Hip hop is representative of what’s going on in the community and the world. What is being promoted in hip hop today is no different then what it’s being promoted in society...materialism, sexualization, image over substance, etc. Hip hop is a mirror. That being said, there are other experiences and other hip hop that reps that today also, you just won’t see it promoted. Hip hop is not a monolith because the people it’s created by and for not a monolith.

I think the difference in sound/style between then and now is that groups like the Pharcyde, their beats and samples, were based in 60's-70's jazz, fusion, soul, rock, and funk.

Difference between hip-hop now and in the 90s is that it used to be an insult if you sounded like someone else and copied their style. Now it's weird if you don't sound like the next guy. Thanks for the look back with this great track. It's definitely a hidden gem.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's hiphop was all about originality, keeping it real and not about being mainstream. Hip hop was the music of the streets..the voice of the streets. That's why you didn't have rappers or rap groups trying to sound like each other. It was about having your own style and not trying to sound like the next man(or woman). It spoke to the youths in the urbanized areas. Commercialism and music labels saw it demand from the masses then took hiphop and reshaped it to what you hear today. Whenever things and artistry can generate money the big corporations mix and dilute the creativity in ways to make it commercial for the sake of monetary value.

The game is programmed. It always was. Hip Hop was a burgeoning music in the mid 80's and early 90's so the industry didn't know how to control it because it was expanding so rapidly in terms of sub genres, etc. By the mid to late 90's labels and media started exerting more control over which artistes blew up. MTV and BET became heavily programmed and even rock music started going underground. Shows like 180 minutes on MTV were the last bastion of good music and that showed at midnight on a Sunday. Rap was the fad nobody believed in the 80's would last but because of how successful it became the powers that be made sure the programming of who got airplay was the way to dumb it down significantly to what it is today. There's a tonne of dope hip hop on the underground scene but nobody cares to dig and find it except for people like me.

My Dad put me on to this song and it's amazing. I didn't know that the song "Stutter (Remix)" from Joe and Mystikal from around the early 2000s sampled this song, so that was a pleasant surprise. I'd definitely recommend you check out A Tribe Called Quest's "Electric Relaxation" from the early 90s. Even their last album in 2016 has a perfect blend of the classic sound and style and the best of what R&B/jazz influenced hip hop has to offer (as of 2016).

Can we please not compare the Pharcyde to "modern hip hop." Please? People were releasing trivial hip hop in 93 too. I remember. I was there. And I had Bizarre Ride on cassette. If you're not listening to decent modern hip hop that is absolutely a you problem, not a hip hop problem. Nothing more eye-roll inducing than listening to super old people and people that don't know anything about hip hop or modern music in general waxing poetic about what's wrong with music today or how "real music" used to sound. If you were interested in hip hop you'd know where to find it. Y'all have a lot of opinions for people who admit they don't know anything about hip hop, modern or old school. Stop making generalizations and do some homework.

Completely agree. A lot of people are just ignorant to how actually diverse Rap is today. There is tons of great rap being made today, even more than there were in the 90s because it has become worldwide and you can find rap scenes in every first world country. It sucks because I absolutely love the classic 90s rap but I hate the elitism that comes with a lot of fans that listen to it.

80's and 90's Rap was way more unique with diverse styles and sounds. Very hard to find ppl that sound like each other. These days, many sound the same, especially with the invention of auto tune to hide the fact that they can't really sing or carry a good tune. Has kinda gotten so bad that young kids turn their noses up when they hear someone who CAN CARRY A TUNE, but isn't using auto tune.

The hell? “This is not hip hop.” “Hip hop has fallen”. Dude, that means you don’t listen to hip hop. Every artist is not about smoking weed and depressing stuff, expand your musical vocabulary man because a ton of amazing rap has been out since the beginning and to this day. This is simply a sub genre and particular group. To ignore the talent of decades of hip hop artists just because you’re only aware of random, popular clout rappers is ignorant and sad.

Hip-hop died in the early 2000s. This is a funky Hip Hop classic from the 90s with samples of the masters like Quincy Jones and Jimmy Hendrix. The lyrics are more clever and the beats have more roots in the 60s + 70s R&B.

the started happening i would say at the turn of the century. The mainstream rap you hear today is a subgenre of rap called gangsta rap (evn this subgenre has subgenres with the likes of trap music and drill music) that has grown so big absorbed all other forms of rap (which still exist on their own today) if you are intrested in the evolution of rap here are a few reccomendations that will show you the progression Smooth Operator- Big Daddy Kane 80's Brendas Got a baby 2pac- early 90's Sound of da Police- KRS-one- Eary 90's They Reminisce- Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth- early 90's The world is yours- Nas- Mid 90's Dead president's- jay-Z- Mid 90's Then comes the gritty sound of the late 90's early 2000's with DMX, 50 Cent, Ludacris DMX- Ruff Ryders anthem 50 Cent- Many Men Ludacris- Fantasy The the mid to late 2000's came the Trap music of the south speciically Atlanta with Gucci Mane, Waka Flaka, Gucci Mane- My Kitchen Waka Flocka- O lets do it From the 2010s to present you have Drill which originated in Chicago with artists like chief keef, king von, FBG Duck, Wooski Chief Keef- Everday King Von- Crazy Story Wooski- Computers Remix FBG Duck- Exposin Me Remix If You choose to listen and react you can see a clear progression of conscious hip hop to the hip hop today.

If I could recommend a few tracks - da art of storytelling from outkast ...and then listen to j cole land of the snakes who’s heavily influenced by earlier groups but no one can really recreate that sound much like cole water can’t be Johnny cash. Isiah rashad, masego, brockhampton are all great artists. But you hear the influence and appreciate the new sounds and topics. Hip hop is the most under apppreciated and misunderstood music form.
