History of the Artificial Reef Extension
The Phi Phi Viking Bay Artificial Reef is located in the Viking Bay, the North-East-Side of Phi Phi Ley.
The artificial reef was built in 2006, consisting of 100 hollow concrete cubes, which were provided by the Department of Marine and Costal Resources (DMCR) , with headquarter in Bangkok.
From this 3 cube towers in pyramid construction developed after relatively short time new corals as well as anemones could settle and gave many reef fish a new home.
This bay had been chosen because even with a new moon or a full moon it is almost spared from strong currents and thus an undisturbed growth of the corals was possible.
Besides, a highly attractive and versatile dive site has been created, not least for marine biologists.
More and more species are constantly being added and the abundance of fish is constantly increasing.
The Artificial Reef Extension
after the first action had been so successful, 13 further cube formations of 21 individual hollow cubes
each were erected following the "pyramids" from 2009 onwards. These cubes are lined up from
south to north in the form of a slight serpentine line and extend over a length of approx. 80 metres.
The Artificial Reef Extension thus consists of a total of 273 individual hollow cubes, whose total weight
at the time of sinking amounted to approx. 250 tonnes.
Here you can see a variety of colourful coral fish, such as snapper, angelfish, scorpionfish, butterflyfish,
porcupinefish, bufferfish, boxfish, anemone fish (nemos), moray eels and nudibranchs to name just a few,
but also gorgonians, soft and hard corals and anemones - in short, a rich palette of marine life.
