You could, as well, comprise a set list of nothing but the opening jams of each set throughout 2001, their golden year. What a band…I listen to them all. The.time.

When Phil assembled this band in 2000, I was still a little sore that Kimock was out. I loved Kimock. But I did these tours anyway, and Spring & Summer 2001 with Phil was probably some of the most exciting Grateful Dead inspired live music I've ever witnessed. It's a shame it flew right over people's heads, then and now, and far less superior bands connected to the Dead are waaaay more popular

I really enjoyed this period with Phil. Jimmy and Warren gelled really well and could really deconstruct things and work them back in with no hurry. Saw a bunch of shows over these couple of years, but my then girlfriend and some my buddies weren't as into as I was. A lot of the really jazzy jams didn't come up for air for quite a while, resulting in losing some folks that enjoyed more concrete tunes. This was heady stuff for sure.

This was one of the best bands I've seen. Went to lots of Phil shows around this time. My memory is a bit hazy and I'm not sure which show it was, but I remember seeing them two days in a row and on the second day I swear when they began, they didn't count off and they started playing from right where they left off the night before. They'd ended the previous night's show very abruptly during the encore and the next day it was as if they began in the middle of an intense jam. No warning up, just right into it. Same key, same tempo as where they stopped the night before. It was awesome.

they did that all the time with the Q. shows would intermingle throughout tours, their chemistry is soul level. VIVA LA Q

Fuck yeah this stuff is fantastic. TBH I've had trouble following everything Phil has done in recent years, with him being so prolific and eclectic in his various live incarnations. This is some of the better post Jerry GD stuff I've heard. Phil was always the most sonically adventurous, the least grounded in good ole roots rock n roll and the most jazz savvy of the bunch. For that reason I love his Phil and friends stuff. Super jammy and he plays with the best of the best. He has even given me new appreciation for Warren Haynes, who for a long time I didn't care for but Phil has convinced me otherwise. And jimmy herring is one of my favorite guitarists out there. He is like Jerry meets McLaughlin while still being completely original. Come to think of it he doesn't really have obvious Jerry influence and I love that. Phil was always hesitant to work with guitarists he saw as Jerry clones. He wasn't looking to be a nostalgia act recreating music that happened decades ago, instead always looking forward and reimagining old music into something new. Fantastic stuff
@LostMyDayJob

Very well said Matthew! While I love D&Co and a lot of the other post-Dead Bobby projects, I agree that Phil has stayed the closest to true Dead philosophy in the years since Jerry passed. He's always looking for a new and interesting angle, even today. We're so lucky to have him.

@@johnhilgart6709 Hi John, thanks for making all these mixes! Phil and Friends are fairly new to me-which is why these mixes are great intros/overviews-so I just go by what I can find on the Archive: 7/22/13, 7/24/13[Loose Lucy w/ "A Love Supreme" jam], 7/26/13, 7/27/13[Bill Evans on sax in Set 2]; 4/18/14, 4/19/14, 4/20/14[Dark Star>Unbroken Chain>Dark Star], 5/29/14, 5/30/14; 7/1/22. But there might be some more dates, and they've both played with Phil individually a few times

Late to the bus as I was, 2001 PLQ was my gateway to a long delayed obsession. Probably a good thing I didn't jump on earlier as I was pretty susceptible to the temptations of the lot.... But what a band!

Excellent! John Milo has proved to be incredibly important to the group and in fact, people like Molo make a great improvisational band. He’s not afraid to step on the gas or slow it down. He can hear when the band needs a change and with Phil keeping tight, the rest of the group stays together. Warren, Jimmy and Rob are the same way. It’s everything John Mayer can’t do. Sorry but it needed to be said 8 years ago. Also, it seemed like Phil’s memory was better than Bobby’s. It happens with age but Phil seemed to be pretty sharp even into his 80s. Also, in Phil’s band, the songs started when it should, not a half measure past like Bobby did for a while back in 2003/04 & 2009. It drove me nuts sometimes. 2006 was a truly amazing tour with Joan Osborne and Barry Sless and Cambell.

Improvisation! No wonder jazz lovers and jazz artist Love the Dead and the bands like this that spawned from them and continue that Improvisational art form beyond the limit of Jazz itself, which in my opinion is still the most revolutionary form of music today! Thanks man!!

Phil created a band with John Molo/Warren Haynes/Jimmy Herring/Rob Barraco who became known affectionately as the Q for quintet. or. PLQ. first show was fall of 2000 at a benefit for a dude who died from Widespread Panic. and their vibe was so magical they stayed together until 2004(?) and created an album called there and back again. their heyday was 2001!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yummy 😋!! Spot on LMDJ! Most excellent, damn I'm getting wood! Thanks homeboy, this is something I had almost forgotten about. Does anyone out there have an accurate figure of how many shows and studio efforts one would need to collect, from both the Dead, and each members individual, and collective efforts, in order to amass a complete collection of their works? Food for thought & feed your head. Peace. Support your local Union.

Oh man good question Stefan. On JerryBase, it says Garcia played in over 4,200 shows in his career between the Dead and his side projects. If you also added all of the non-Jerry side projects and all of the post-Dead iterations to that, I would think you're talking about at least double that amount total? Good luck collecting them all lol!
