Diogenes strongly opposed social values and institutions, because, according to him, these are at odds with human nature.
He believed that human society infused us with all kinds of unnatural desires that are not only obsolete but also prevent us from being happy. Therefore, we should strip ourselves of these corrupting man-made constructs, so we’re able to live how we’re supposed to live: in agreement with nature.
Diogenes’ stance toward everything cultured was very obvious. He practiced what he preached, behaving obscenely, with no regard for convention. It’s no surprise that people called him ‘doggish’, dog-like, or simply ‘the dog’.
This video explores Diogenes’ philosophy, and what we can learn from his ideas.

Diogenes was the first real example of a Cosmopolitan individual, no matter where he went he could make himself at home. He wasn’t bound by social norms and freed himself of the anxieties these social norms carry. He showed the world that one can be completely self-sufficient and find contentment and happiness in the simple things. People may have ridiculed him then but he has become an example on philosophical resistance over social control and false virtues. He was so grounded in his philosophical lifestyle that even ALEXANDER THE GREAT showed him respect. Not an easy thing to accomplish and he did it by just being true to himself. We can learn a lot from Diogenes, especially now with society becoming more self absorbed and morally corrupt than ever, a little of Diogenes’ self-sufficient resilience and philosophical wisdom could do all of us some good. No totalitarian government can control a society of philosophers, they are check against corruption and social injustice and carry the torch of creative ideas, critical thinking and moral virtue. There’s a statue of Diogenes in both Corinth and Sinope today, that should say something for the impact he had on Greek culture on even modern culture because we are still praising him today. He was “The Dude” of the ancient world.

Not a troll. The point of his behavior was anything but a selfish attempt to insult people. He actually really wanted to help people who he believed had lost their way. Imagine seeing believing things clearly yet those around you seem to be intentionally ignorant. In what instruction book is life described. I doubt there is one. If there isn't then why do we all go about doing the same thing in civilized life? Because we were told from birth to do so? Instead, Diogenes opened his eyes and attempted to see the world as it is, not what we have justified it to be.

From experience in NYC I say of a modern day Diogenes... And the cops would keep hassling him and chasing him from wherever he parked himself to rest. And we have to work to get an apartment because it's pain to live in the streets being hassled by the authorities. But a $3,000 apartment in NYC, $1,000 of that $3,000 the landlord charges every month goes to pay his property taxes. And the rent, you pay that with the money you have left after your income is taxed to death. And that apartment, it's a place where you shower to be clean for going to work. The system is one of slavery, except a slave has it better because he or she is at least taken care of and provided for. This new system of slavery is where the slave has to do everything, but the master can still whip with his laws. But within this system is a professional class of dog people. They are on welfare. They, unlike the slaves, have everything provided for them, never have to work, wind up on drugs and alcohol, commit crimes on the slaves for extra money for drugs and alcohol, and it's the repressive taxes the slaves pay that goes to support the professional dog people. Diogenes the dog, would despise the professional dog people.

There is also another anecdotal incident regarding the most beautiful harlot of Corinth Lais, who was angry because Diogenes despised her beauty. So, to avenge him she offered him a night with her for free. But, after she put out the lantern, she switched places with her old and ugly maid. When the next day she tried to mock him publicly, for this prank she set on him, Diogenes replied: "After the lantern is put out every looks the same."

There's way more to the story of Diogenes than just a crazy man living on the street preaching at people. Did you know he used to be wealthy? His father was the head of the Monetary hierarchy and minted the money coins. But, the currency was debased and he was banished and exiled. The reason for his attitude and his disdain for social hangups, status symbols, and other problems with society was because of what happened to him. He was made into a slave, but the thing that saved him, and brought him back home by middle age was his mind, and his intellect. He lived at the top, the highest of highs, and crashed to the lowest of lows, and humility. So, when he finally got back to talk with his fellow Philosophers he could counter argue anything they thought, stated, arrested, or believed in out of spite. He had a kind of extreme reverse psychology, and on principle would follow through on all ideas just because he could. He had a very snarky sarcasm, and was very witty. As disgusting as he was, many people would hang out with him, including the youth. Regardless of how stinky, and filthy he was, his mind was brilliant. People still valued him for that despite and in spite of, his filthiness. The reason you couldn't convince him to be hygienic or polite was because he could counter argue any justification on any technicality. He knew not everyone they was behaving polite was actually being polite inside, and that they had different motives for doing so rather than to be good. He knew slavery existed, and that people treated them poorly. It's no wonder he was misanthropic and preferred dogs because dogs were always loving to him, whereas human beings had been so cruel. He was a more extreme version of Socrates whom also often lived out on the streets and was an iconoclast. Diogenes had a large group of followers that he preached to. The establishment tried to stop it which made it grow. Many religions later on all ripped off Diogenes, like John the Baptist. So obviously a rip-off. Today, Diogenes would be very much like a stand up comedian that speaks truth to power, or an avant garde artist that does "performance arts" as a form of protest, or to make a statement.

@Ligma.69420 2 месяца назад
@@Nickers19 wow, a lot has changed since I wrote that lol. But, I think our reaction to Diogenes can still teach us about ourselves. Hopefully I can explain what I mean clearly enough. Those of us who can't help but admire him in a way seem to understand on some level that material things alone do not make us happy. Meeting our needs on the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy would be enough, it seems. Diogenes also lived a life most would consider miserable or meaningless if they adopted that lifestyle for themselves - giving up on all ambition and just meeting your base needs. To me, it illustrates that we also intuitively understand that meaning and misery are relative concepts that really carry no objective weight. "Meaning" only has the weight you give it, and to Diogenes he obviously found meaning enough by following what he considered to be "nature" (ironically finding inspiration from dogs, which we domesticated from wolves in a way that wouldn't have happened "naturally"). Yet, we also find him a bit repulsive. If you ran into a modern Diogenes, you'd likely just think them a crazy homeless person. I think while we understand that subjective meaning can be found even if one completely disregards societal norms, not many of us are comfortable enough to simply stop giving a fuck entirely. If we could, how many of us would simply drop the charade we perform in order to try and gain clout or excessive wealth? We care what others think, and most of us can't really help it, I'd say. What if we, instead, focused on a life of Epicurian simplicity and (as a result) worked/stressed much less? Is there a "middle way" to be found here? Diogenes is an embodiment of the Zen proverb "Let go, or be dragged." The things we own (can) end up owning us. By paring his life down to the absolute minimum, he did not have much, this is true. But he also had nothing holding him back. He had nothing to lose.

There is a further account of his meeting with Alexander, though I'm unsure of the source. Alexander found Diogenes examining some relics on the ground. When Alexander asked what he was doing, Diogenes replied: "I am searching for the bones of your father, but I cannot distinguish them from those of a slave." Diogenes also supposedly said: "In a rich man's house the only place to spit is in his face."

Most humans are trapped inside of it and the next step in spiritual evolution would be to rise above it. We long for that happiness and this is why people for example drink alcohol. It sinks your awareness below thinking, giving you a little taste of that eternal peace.

I don’t care anymore. I told my best friend that if he acts as if it’s okay that his colleagues dominate him then it’s okay for me to dominate him and his colleagues. He’s afraid of being fired for exposing corruption because him and most of the public are cowards even though the law is on their side in this matter, they just gotta make themselves useful somehow and I don’t care what happens to them if they allow others to commit crimes towards them because it feels more convenient to them than standing up for themselves. You need to feel contempt for what they do and realize if you don’t act nobody will so be the change you want to see. A lot led up to this like extreme child abuse in my past and the only one close to me who cared for me died and not even the social authorities would help me even though I called out for help. My friends and their families didn’t do anything either because it’s convenient, made me grow to be cynical, if I want something I gotta do it myself. Life forced me to rely on myself people expect each other to be treated like children.

Being free from all of those you have to be extremely brave and also have to lose a lot in order to gain that freedom. But there has to be a balance somewhere where you do enjoy a freedom as well as not completely cut off from society. I think that freedom is in artistic freedom. I watched this series that Ruby Wax made about herself alone on a tropical island. She made a friend out of some sea creature and spoke to it regularly. She denied herself any food from the mainland, so any substantial food she had to catch and kill it herself. She took shelter in some crude hut that she constructed but it hardly kept the tropical rain from drenching her to the bone, so she was miserable frequently. After several days on this island though she began to feel as if she had strangely liberated herself from the constraints of needing to put a face on to appear acceptible others. She almost resented the camera crew returning to the island to set themselves up in her base again. That is how I feel and I also feel that animals are easier to please than humans.
