The Philosophy Of Alan Watts - Making Sense Of Senselessness

Alan Watts’s impact on the world continues to reverberate. His teachings remind us about our potential connection to everything we love, hate, and don't care about, as well as our foolishness in thinking we know enough to take anything, including his ideas, too seriously.

Actually, he didn't "borrow" anything because he is not a guru, he always made that very clear. He just talked about a subject he loved. And by doing that he just suggested that we see things from another point of view and explained stuff that for us Westerners would be, perhaps, hard to understand on our own... when you realize "god" is not a person(an old man with a white beard), but instead is the laws of the universe and that Christianity is nothing more than an attempt to classify and understand them . you will understand the world, the universe, reality, history, existence. it is an amazing experience but also a terrifying one. it is not a journey for all. for it WILL cause great pain but once the journey of pain evolves into a great pleasure you will become what you have always wanted to be and so much more but even more amazing than more is you will become so much less and it will be amazing.

I was always an overanalyical person to the point where it would cause me grear strife and stopped me from wnjoying things. Idk..I think I got it from my dads side of the familt since they were all wory worts. So obviosly this drew me to psychology of the mind. I work with special need individuals so in a way it's beneficial since I can usually figure out even the most complex ones quite quickly. I started out listening to Jordon Peterson to kind of learn how to cope with things and improve my life. He helped a little, but I began to find him a bit prickly and too success driven. After 5 months listening to his lectures I stumbled upon Alan Watts and he was hard going from Peterson who is very literal to someone like Watts who speaks more metaphorically and mystically. Although after listening to Watts for about 3 monthd every day. Something profoudlny changed in me. It waz when I listened to hiis words acoompanied by chillstep I felt like I had an out of body experience. It was incredible to say the least and in those moments I really got him and eversince then I almost feel like a completely different person. I don't dwell on anything anymore. I just take notice of it then let it flow out of me. Now when I for walks alone in nature everything feels different. I actually appreciate everything around me and the wind or rain hitting me just feels like an actual experience not just something i ignore since i felt it many times before. I'm so happy I found him when I did. I just wish it would have been in my 20's and not my 40's but no point on dwelling on the past it's an utter waste of time Alan would say.

Imagine if Einstein didn’t express what only he, individually, could, but instead he would “blend” in as everything and nothing and started meditating on top of a hill for the rest of his life to detach himself from his ego, it would be such a loss for the universe, as she’s given him all all of his personal and individual potential to add to the expansion of the universe. A healthy ego does need realization that it’s part of a whole, but in knowing it’s distinctive nature lies its power.

I only just discovered Alan Watts about a year ago, and I've been here going on 6 decades. I too, find his definitions and word-pictures regarding everything to be insightful, refreshing and comforting. It's a difficult thing to do when one decides to confront oneself (one's self) about the cognitive dissonance one experiences between what one has been/is being told versus what that same one observes going on around, through and within oneself. As for me, living well in whatever time I decided on before arriving, feeling 'good' as much as possible and meeting what comes not simply stoically, but with a smile and willingness, both in my first appearance here and this moment, seems a far better posture to stance when walking a chosen path. And not necessarily dumping or rejecting parts of what I've been taught growing up, nor to fully embrace, but to continually throughout my day create little moments, bubbles of time wherein I invest a modicum of time and effort into juxtaposing what brings me good feelings, what brings me bad feelings, and 'The Dance' of the two playing out while I'm here. It is, to me anyway, a thing far easier said than done as well as seeming the logical and rational 'thing to do.' I watch quite a lot of your videos, appreciating all that I've viewed. This one, however, stands out for me. Your appreciation for the subject is evident in your research endeavors as they play out here, both in narration and editing. Well read, and well received. Thank you and cheers!

I discovered Alan Watts at 5:00 am on a Sunday in 1973, in LA, CA. I had been through the doors of perception and was just settling back down. I had been listening to a Rock station and suddenly I was listening to an erudite voice with a mild English accent. It struck me right away that I was hearing the truth. Not only that, but in an uncanny way, it was like he was reminding me of things I already knew on some level. Who was this person? I listened with rapt attention for an hour, although it seemed much longer. I scrambled for pencil and paper and wrote down that this was Alan Watts courtesy of the Electronic University and that he was on every Sunday at 5:00 am. I read all of his books that were in print at that time. I continued to listen to this incredibly knowledgeable, wise and sublimely humorous man until the present. Alan Watts changed my life for the better from that moment in 1973 until now. I can say that the eternal Now is all that we have... Thanks Alan!

He's not necessarily an academic. By his own admission he was an entertainer first, a teacher second. He isn't meant to be taken as seriously as people seem to think, besides his understandings of Buddhism/Zen/Taoism are simplistic to say the least. Personally, I've listened to a lot of Alan Watts in the past but after taking Buddhism more seriously I left him for more reliable sources. He was a good gateway into seeing the world in a different way, but for actual philosophical rigour, I'll turn to the suttas themselves and to Ajahns and Bhikkhus/Bhikkhunis, and monks of different orders; as well as academics and historians. I will actually refer people to Alan Watts as a good introduction to eastern philosophy but not much more than that, to bear in mind the flaws in what he says but also the beauty in a lot it.

I'm an entertainer. That is to say, in the same sense, that when you go to a concert and you listen to someone play Mozart, he has nothing to sell except the sound of the music. He doesn’t want to convert you to anything. He doesn’t want you to join an organization in favor of Mozart's music as opposed to, say, Beethoven's. @Liam O’Neil yessss💯💯 dont you feel like you're crazy?? Because I feel crazy, I also feel like I'll never be able to find anyone to be with because of the way I think lmao and I just cant comply with others ways. I feel like as I've thought too much already that I cant stop thinking and I see everyone around me they seem to not think as much I guess? I'm not even sure how it is that I got this way, I wasnt so aware back then compared to now, sometimes I'm glad I'm aware and sometimes I feel like I shouldn't have ever. Mostly cause then I have to figure a way to balance it out, I have to still work for a government that doesn't care and deal with the injustice in society. Also are people not aware what technology is about to do to them??!!!!
@almareyes2192
@almareyes2192 5 лет назад
@Liam O’Neil I absolutely appreciate you having this conversation with me because I can never have it with the people around me, I try but it's like I'm in another world. But I totally agree with you, it's weird when you notice how alive you really are, I had moments back then when I'd even stare at myself in the mirror thinking do I know who I really am? Or what I'm doing here? But you're right a balance between all of what we got, but I feel like the system makes it difficult, it's like they really got that phrase everywhere "survival of the fittest" some may die before you along the way, some commit suicide, some are addicts some dont know that they're addicts. Its crazzzzyy! And then the fact that someone can try and do good and the bad side always wins like what it with that too? It makes it hard for many to actually know what they need in life, I've seen some that still dont know what they want and they're already at their 50's. But yes I've been trying to get there, knowing more on how to think not what to think, I'm not sure if you know that quote of "how you think empowers you far beyond those who only know what to think", I just get stuck though hella, I start thinking of those around me and on how to help them but I can only do so much cause then I'm ignoring myself,. Life is just confusing, or atleast we make it confusing cause theres two worlds we are at at the same time and to make them both work or have them composed is the thing that kills many the most specially teens. It's sad to hear young people go away without knowing what amazing things they could've achieved if we all worked together.

@Liam O’Neil Liam O’Neil Liam O’Neil Daamnn fuck yeah that sounds perfect!😂💯 but yes it is just a distraction of our own reality. But ayee, I lowkey still care about me dying I'm not over that stage I am 20 so I'm not there yet on accepting death, I mean theres been even kids or people who have died without even leaving in peace. I'd atleast want to achieve peace of mind before I go Haha, but there really is like family and the environment! And yes that movie is always relatable if you dont relate to it that must be strange lol but yes holly fuck we do, we have all this technology in our hands and most of us waste it on just using it for "recreational purposes" I try my best in using it wisely or not at all but we do have many advantages just all in a matter of going out there and having connections. I'm in the process of trying to quit my job as well, I'm so done with it although I love what I do but I dont want to work my life away atleast not like that Haha that sounds amazing though that's goals!! Chopping wood in the forest are you telling me you're a lumberman? Lol yes there is some rough patches along the way I'm not sure how I'm gonna do it but I'm going to do it!💯 but yes I feel you I hope I get to that stage too I think we really all plead for a blissful end like that but we get confused along the way. But hey meanwhile I'll work my up to meet you and be your neighbor so we can have all this bonfire, good music weed and talks to do haha and thank you, I've never done this too but I think I will definitely hit you up!
