I always tear up when Vinu chakravarthy says “Pulla nu petha ipdi oru pullaya peranum ma” the expressions of manorama is just terrific. This is definitely one of the top movies in Tamil cinema history

Would like to add 1 more thing to your analysis, Janakaraj character is also an embodiment of true friendship. He stays with his friend , through his ups & lows. The penultimate scene you mentioned also showcases it like how Panchatcharam is happy that his friend finally achieves his revenge. Truly a selfless character.

It’s been ages since I saw Annamalai. The feeling I had before watching your video was “It was another commercial movie of Rajini that was successful”. You have beautifully pointed out the layers in Annamalai that make it one of the best Rajini movie. I literally got goosebumps hearing your thoughts. Going to watch this movie again today.

Suresh Krishna is severely underrated. His camera work in Annamalai was deconstructed by Vinoth which was pretty amazing.

This film is first path breaker for superstar , Songs especially as for Vairamuthu it was a sort of a comeback for him , Deva's first big film after Ilayaraja's slight decline after 80s, Suresh Krishna's Direction above all was fantastic.

Excellent analysis as always.. you did mention the style factor but taking it one level deeper.. Looking back in Tamil cinema in early 1990s .. Super star pioneered some supremely well fitted suits..beige suit specifically in that iconic scene.. not enough credit is given to the fashion designer I feel. Looking ahead another supremely well made masala movie in Thupakki.. Vijay is styled phenomenally well and that is recognized and commented on (rightly so)

Excellent analysis. One more point is the journey of friendship cum brotherhood.Ashok longed for a family which he got thru annamalai and his family while annamalai saw a brother in him.As years pass by,their journey gets tested (due to their principles personalities and ambitions) as a result of which their relationship fails.Years later their friendship comes back thru various factors like their ownchildren,annamala's sister,Radharavi etc.Like u said,it is annamalai who longs for revenge not ashok.In fact he reminces his friendship days when his son shares that his shirt got spoilt due to splashing

Interesting analysis. Although everyone know the movie scene by scene but still you helped to recollect essence of values in it. Something impacted me or where I disagree with was when thalaivar slaps his friend's father. It's not the character of the hero nor thalaivar. He respects elders mother father n all. Then how can he slap his own friend's father. I try to put myself in thalaivar's shoe n think will I slap my friend's father ever? No, right? Bcoz we see no difference in our parents n friend's parents. This is something which doesn't sync with movie or may be just to ignite hate towords each other? Otherwise Ashok never against thalaivar until that happens. What you see about this?
