Hello everyone! I’ve been working on this podcast about photography and art for about a year now and it’s finally time to upload season 1! I would like to thank you all for the support and constant encouragement. The podcast will go up this March and April alongside our normal videos and shorts here on the channel! Thank you all so much 🤍 Ps: what do you think William Mumler was doing here with his ghost photos?

Hello! Great podcast! Just a note Mumler used the wet plate collodion process to create glass negatives and printed them on sensitized paper for his trickster double exposure photography. Wet plate collodion came after the daguerreotype and the calotype, it was invented in 1851. The daguerreotype is a copper plate positive image and couldn’t be reprinted. Looking forward to more shows!

I feel this is a great example of showing how easily we can believe anything when we are at our lowest. Not agreeing at all with the fact that the guy took advantage of the people who were grieving at the time, but I'd give it to him for trying something innovative. Nevertheless, amazing first episode for an exciting new project! I really love the tone and vibes of it! Off to a great start! Cograts to the both of you!!

I must say that is one fascinating piece of history, I would have to agree that Mumler probably by accident produced a double exposure in the beginning and found that the popularity of it especially being somewhat endorsed by a spiritualist of that time drew him into that niche so deep that once he was in he found it very hard to get out of it so he just went with it. On a lighter note I must say I love this new idea of a series and hope to see more. I really enjoyed it, you two did a great job with it! 😎❤

What an interesting guy. I do feel like there’s an opportunity for a lot of positive to come out of his preying on people’s grief; it gives them an opportunity to process their emotions and move on from the loss. That doesn’t make it okay and I still feel like it’s morally wrong to do. It seems like an experience to take what you want from it.

Very interesting content and photographer thank you. Can I mention to you please the wonderful photography of the sadly late German photographer, Sibylle Bergeman. I have just come across her work and I think she would make a great subject for your expertise.

Very interesting podcast about a little known and forgotten photographer. I read about ghost or spirit photography a long time ago. Basically, those so-called ghost photographs were made from double or triple exposures. Perhaps they were composed in the darkroom much like the photographer Jerry Uelsmann. As you and your friend stated, William Mumler saw he had a good thing or scam going. Now we know how double or triple exposures can be created. Be it in camera or on computer, if you know what you're doing it, you too can capture ghosts or spirits on film/digital.
@TatianaHopper
@TatianaHopper 3 месяца назад
Yes I think it was a case of perfect time and opportunity for Mumler and you're right we also believe it's double exposure. Thank you so much for watching!

Enjoyed this very much, so thanks. For me Mumler sounds like he was certainly taking advantage of people in a vulnerable moment, so at the least he was being somewhat exploitative. Fascinating story! BTW I loved the intro Nighthawks - well you are a Hopper! Look forward to the next in the series. Keep it weird!
@TatianaHopper
@TatianaHopper 3 месяца назад
Thank you so much, yes I was of the same opinion I understand that you know you see and believe what you want to believe, but still bottom line he wasn't being very genuine in his work unless he really linked with some ghosts to produce it ahah

Fascinating, thank you both for this, I have never heard of this guy. I would like to know whether he was saying he could see the ghosts at the time of taking the photographs, as the compositions suggest, or was he saying they just happened to appear when he developed them, in which case how did he know where to arrange his composition? 🙏🏻
@TatianaHopper
@TatianaHopper 3 месяца назад
I think he knew how to arrange the composition because he had already used the same plate / sheet previously (to photograph a "ghost" standing next to a chair or something) so he knew that by having someone sitting on that same chair and tell them to be straight or be a certain way it would perhaps look realistic. Who knows, I found different accounts during the research. Thanks for watching!

Actually there's a story we're going to touch during this season that happened around the 1840s before this one which is in the 1860s. That one was somewhat in the realm of fake news, it's actually pretty funny looking at it from nowadays. Thanks for watching!
