Billy Joel - truly one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. An amazing piano player, composer, lyricist, and yes - singer (he doesn't rate his own vocals). In this video, I explore his piano style on selections from his Greatest Hits Albums 1 and 2.

This is amazing, completely priceless. No one is doing accurate, no-frills tutorials like this! I'd love to see you do Summer, Highland Falls. It's maybe my favorite of Billy's playing. Also Miami 2017, And So It Goes, Vienna, and Lullabye are each really beautiful and complex. Thanks so much again. Can't wait for more songs and artists (maybe Elton someday!).

Great suggestions there! Yes, "Summer, Highland Falls" is so definitively Billy, I really have to get to it soon. I might do another video on the album tracks. Elton is in the pipeline too and moving his way up!!

Great video! My favourite is “She’s Got a Way” which always reminded me of former Cream bassist and vocalist, Jack Bruce, who often played beautiful piano on his solo albums, on songs like “Theme For an Imaginary Western”, “Can You Follow?” and “Golden Days”.

Thank you so much :) I’ve always fantasized about being able to sit down and have the Billy Joel effect on a song I play. His “banjo fingers” as he calls it is a style I would love to see dissected. You can hear it in “traveling prayer” and an unreleased song called Rosalinda. Maybe it’s just a version of his rolling style you demonstrated on always a woman. I don’t know 😂

Banjo fingers! Wow, I didn’t know that it had a name. It’s such a hard style to play. In one early interview he talks of himself as a five fingered player. I’ll put your idea on my list. Thank you!

I'd never heard of the house! I'd just heard it as a way of referring to an American from the USA. After all, Mexicans are Americans. So are Bolivians and Surianameans, Brazilians, Guatemalans, French Guyanans, etc.

I do like your videos Martin. I would like more or a deep dive though. Instead of skimming through Billy's catalogue dig right into Hollywood Nights or repeat sections in songs so we can work on it too. Keep them coming though sir.

Yes, he really is humble about it. I heard him say in an interview that guy in the lobby is probably better than him but then I think the guy is in the lobby for a reason! Yes, Billy Joel’s playing is incredibly sophisticated and this, along with the way he used chords, the songwriting (my God the songwriting!) and let’s not forget the singing make him a total legend. :)

I’m not gonna bother to list all the errors here, but those of us who have been Billy fans forever and have scoured concerts, tapes. CD’s, and yes! even the published books of NOTE-FOR-NOTE TRANSCRIPTIONS, cringe when we see this “authoritative” description of Billy ‘s playing. OK just one: the Movin’ Out intro is missing a G# that’s critical to getting the right sound.

I'd love to and would have already if he had played more piano. He plays on Oh! You Pretty Things but not on a whole lot else. Rick Wakeman from yes did a lot of the big stuff like Life On Mars but maybe that could be the angle? Leave it with me!

Hi there, I find that the Tutorials by Hugo are excellent in general. There is also The Billy Joel Keyboard Book. I tend to go to musicnotes, put in the song I want plus piano accompaniment. Good luck!

Great stuff! Please do the piano styles of Brian Wilson. Especially his rock shuffle style; How it compares to other rock shuffle piano styles. Do you know about that piano program that allows the viewer to see the notes while you are playing them? It has to be played with an electric keyboard. It really helps to see all the notes. If you don't know it, I'll try to find the name.

Well done sir... I love them all and play a version of about half of them... You understand his music, and play it as it is intended to be heard... Beautiful 🎶🎶🎶 The Fender Rhodes piano sound helps "Just the Way You Are " and "My Life " establish their identity.

Really great lesson ! Perhaps u could go a tad slower to let us all really scope out the changes ! We see enough to get some theory of it ; but , miss a lot of impt fingerings
