I love The Piano Teacher movie, it clawed into my psychy. So I bought the book (very cheaply on Amazon) and the book crawled into my soul scratching at my mind in only a way the written word can. And it was this book that got me into foreign and more difficult novels.
I ordered a copy of this book from my local bookstore after watching your review. You always recommend the best books and I'm glad I found your channel! Cheers from the Philippines :D
My introduction to your channel has been through this video after idly looking up Elfriede Jelinek on RU-vid. Great review and you've sold me (somewhat) on Scott Walker too. Cheers👍🏿
I should get back on Pynchon... I made it through half of Gravity and felt like my brain was on acid. I'm definitely not one to give up on books... I merely postpone them until a later time, when my patience has been cultivated further
I'm an Austrian, I like her, I like Handke's work as well, don't get me wrong... BUT WHY, WHY OH WHY... haven't you reviewed Stefan Zweigs "The World of Yesterday"? It's very different than this but for me one of the greatest books ever written. Read it... seriously, the amount of history and poetry and tragedy, and fate that is woven into its fabric is almost too big for one person to digest. If anybody wants to understand a big part of the modern European soul... read this book, read it ... like seriously read it and review it, I would love your reflections on this masterpiece.
Scott Walker, Jordan Peterson and Haneke mentioned in the same video about a beautifully fucked up book? Just when you think this channel can't get any better...
@@nietzschean3138 I hate communism and I think Peterson is a grifter. And why go to the extreme and try to hurt someone because they don’t like your hero? Be good to your fellow man. This world is coming apart at the seams and we are still treating each other like shit.
@@calebcostigan2561 Didn't the commie started it first? By making that unnecessary opinionated comment when the original comment was friendly and didn't deserve such a negative reaction.
Love that book! Also check out "Lust" by Jelinek. Her writing is by the way also very funny (in a totally dark manner of course), at least in the original German. I hope the humor also translates well.
I really want an entire video of you just talking about Scott Walker (and maybe one about Jaques Brel.) I have The Drift and Scott 3 on record and they are each among my favorite things I own! I've only recently discovered your channel and it's been a huge inspiration for me to pick up some new literature, best channel discovery in a very long time, cheers!
As someone currently attending a conservatory for piano I was happy to see you review this book as well, even if it's maybe not the greatest representation of a pianist haha
Thanks a bunch Daniel, I'm going to do a video soon about music I love like that for Patreon supporters of the show, though I'm sure I'll mention many more as the channel continues. I'm thrilled to hear you're getting so much out of it, thank you VERY much for watching and please stick around, keep in touch and throw any/all recs!
It's really cool to hear about you reading Gravity's Rainbow. I'm envious of anyone who gets to experience that book for the first time. When I first finished it last year, I hated it, so much so that I gave my copy away. As the months passed, I found myself unable to get that book out of my mind. Definitely one of the best books I've ever read, it's horrifying, hilarious, and nothing but a masterpiece. Enjoy!
I've seen the movie recently. I was so shocked. As you say, it made me too very uncomfortable and although I tried to sympathise with any of the characters, it was a bit hard to do. The performances are spectacular though. So well done. ☺
I love this film and the book too! The book was slightly difficult to read mostly because of so many musical references that I didn't understand, but apart from that it's a chilling and fascinating story! I'd recommend everyone to read the book first and then to watch the movie. "Unfortunately" I watched the film first and it did kill the enjoyment of fully enjoying the book.
This novel is a masterpiece. So intense. Since you also admire it so much, I would recommend that you read Malina by Ingeborg Bachmann (if you haven't already).
@@emogoesboom yes, you can read it as a 16 year old. The original is written in German. But, probably you can find a translation in your native language.
If you haven't read, or watched, it yet, you should consider Malina. It's written by Ingeborg Bachmann and the screenplay for the movie was written by Jelinek. The lead character is played by Huppert. ;)
Thanks for turning me on to Scott Walker i'm loving him and his bravado. I also laughed when you said you were gonna talk about Gravity's Rainbow cause i'm in the middle of reading that right now.
Im interested to read an english translation of one of Jelinek's works. When I read her in German I get the impression that a large body of what she's written is almost untranslatable because so much would be lost in terms of double meanings etc. And because language and the unusual things she does with it is so central in her writing and a lot of the brilliance lies in that... I just feel like it would be a nightmare to translate. Would almost be too much pressure for me. I might read this one in English just out of curiosity.
Hey mate, just ordered this book. I saw the Hanake adaptation a little while ago and thought it was great. I also just read Torture Garden by Octave Mirbeau and it had such a profound effect on me. It hit me right down to my soul in a way i can't explain. Have you read it and if so are you planning on reviewing in? Great video as always, mate!
Wow I am glad you are reading Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow! I follow your reviews and they just brilliant. Waiting to see what you gonna say about GR. That was the first book I read this year :)
Just wondering who your favourite directors are. You mention haneke in this video and you reviewed sculpting in time, and said you loved stalker, so I was wondering what other filmmakers you like.
Hahaha you got badgered enough to read Gravity's Rainbow. Ah well, idk what you'll think of it. I finished my second reading of it a month ago. The second reading was more cohesive for sure. Lots of funny, silly, fantastical stuff in GR, lots of depressing disturbing stuff. But not really any book like it. Hope you like it Cliff!
Did you watch the movie? It has lots of full scenes of music performance wich are so compelling and sets the mood in such an unique way (ps: I found this video by searching for a review to the movie)
You really really should (if you are able to) read it in german. Her montage technique and her at times rigid cold mocking prose just cant be translated that well into english. Oh and talking about music influencing her novel, Jelinek is a trained pianist :)
You didn't even tell us where your moving to haha, you staying in Cali? And I feel your pain with Pynchon, I'm not there yet but finally tackling Underworld and deep into it.
Better Than Food: Book Reviews have you seen the adaption of Melville's Pierre where scott walker 's leading an orchestra of gothic punks in a commune?
Not sure you'll like this, but Marc Almond did a Jacques Brel tribute a couple of decades ago, including Jackie - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-adRNP-IqBVc.html Cheers for your thoughts on all these books. Look forward to each new video :)
Hope the Pynchon is going well, I've tried to really stick with him but just couldn't. Anyways, you should read Sexus from Henry Miller, it's fucking awesome.
Your pateron wont load for me, I hope you can keep doing this though, very interesting channel, but I wish that you'd go more in depth in the technical aspects
I'm sorry to hear that, perhaps this link will work, thank you for the interest in supporting. Perhaps you'd find it helpful if I made a how-to video! www.patreon.com/booksarebetterthanfood
