Video lesson: An Origami Butterfly dedicated to the memory of Carl David Hall, principal Piccolo and Flute player for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Designed by Michael G. LaFosse, on February 3rd, 2016, Origamido Studio
The music of the piccolo dances brightly above the sound of the orchestra like a fluttering butterfly above a captivating field of flowers. The "check marks" that appear on the wings remind me of musical notes, and also the pencil marks on my sheet music that Carl would use to note that I had accomplished the goals of my lesson.
Carl David Hall was a phenomenal musician, an inspiring teacher, and a genuinely wonderful man. Carl was my first flute teacher, way back in 1975 at the University of Tampa, Florida.
You will need a square of paper that is colored differently on each side to create the contrasting color design. A standard 15 cm sheet of origami paper makes a butterfly that has a wingspan of approximately 11 cm at its fullest measure.
This origami butterfly is an intermediate-level project. Beginners should not try to fold along with the video. Instead, watch a segment and then pause the action when folding your paper. Repeat viewing of folding sections as needed. Learning in chunks is generally best. And like learning a musical piece, practice to perfect it!
Thank you, Carl, for the joy and inspiration that you gave to so many.
