Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.
There's a calmness that comes from the singular focus on the ball because everything else around you becomes irrelevant.
This week, we are going to dive into a subject to help you play better and focus when you're out there on the court.
The topic is- Where is the Pickleball?
Everything revolves around that ball. It's the center of our pickleball universe, if you want to think about it that way. Really focusing on where the pickleball is will help us in several different ways.
Consider trying to pick up the holes on the ball. Picking up the holes on the ball will really help you gain a better sense of what's going on with the ball and improve your focus and calmness when you play.

As someone with ADHD, focus is always difficult but I like this instruction because it gives me about one thing to focus on.

Glad the video was helpful. It can be hard to keep on one thing, but it is definitely a more effective approach (and calmer too). Take care

For me, the opposing player gives me more information. A ball in space tells me very little. If you wait until the ball is in motion to you, it's too late. The player will give you more information, always. Receiving skills starts as the opposing player starts their preparation.

True that your opponent provides lots of information. Both what we do and what they do originates from the ball and what it is doing. A ball on the left is different than a ball on the right, etc. The better we get at reading the room the more we can anticipate and our opponent's behavior is certainly key to that (paddle up, paddle down, etc.). Appreciate the comment.

Have you tried focusing on the ball and use your peripherals to read the movement of your opponent? You don't need as much visual accuracy to read the body language of an opponent and the ball will take you to the opponent you need to see and read anyway.

@@DinkMastery I try to do the opposite, actually and that is what I teach my students...to watch how the opponent receives the ball. Are they too close, are they hitting a suspended ball, a dropping ball, shoulder angle, separation angle, face angle etc. then read and react to the ball off the paddle, then focus on contact point and watch the ball with peripheral vision while locking in on the contact point with direct vision. I think it also depends on right eye or left eye dominance as to what may work best.

@@kylewilliams5131 I respect it. For me I hit the ball more accurately when I stay locked on it with my head still and I notice a falling off when I stop keeping my eye on the ball. My right eye is dominant

I am 77 yo and used to play stick ball. A broom stick and a ball like a pickle ball. The small group that I played with could follow that little ball through the air to the broom stick and hit it. I remembered that the other day while playing pickleball. Thank you and will try that when I play again. I play six day a week and twice on mon and tue. It is nice to be retired. Thank you Ben

Hello Ben. Hitting a ball with a broomstick is certainly more challenging than with a paddle :). Glad the episode struck a chord. Happy holidays.

The most forgotten aspect of my game. Thanks for the reminder. I even tried coloring the inside of the hole to help me follow the flight.

Have always been a fan of your teaching style and this teaching point is on point. Recently I have been trying to focus on ball tracking when I play. Your teaching point in regards to being super focused is right on. It's something I use to do when I was into competitive archery and followed the teachings of a former Olympic Rifle Shooter, Lanny Bassham who won Olympic Gold and started a company called Mental Management. His book from some 30 years ago, With Winning in Mind is still relevant today and focuses on changing mental hiccups that costs us to fail at becoming the best that we can be. Lanny's teachings and training methods have not only helped rifle shooters to become better and champions, but has also trained archers, golfers, dog trainers, beauty contest competitors and many more disciplines. One time I let a supervisor at work have it to read and it was given back to a sectary to return it. She read a bit of it and asked if she could read it. After reading it, she used some of the principles taught in it to beat her husband at darts.

Appreciate it. My mom was a pretty good archer back in her day. I have always had a yearning to get into it a bit more. One day perhaps :)

After not playing for one week I could tell my ball focus was not up to par. I actually totally missed several volleys that were not difficult shots. Why did I not listen to this podcast prior to playing today. Ball focus is so important but seldom practiced. Great instructional podcast Tony.

The explanation starts at 2.03 and it's basically just to watch the wholes on the ball 😅

If that is all you got out of the podcast, then I did not do a good job with it. Will keep working at it. Be well.
