Welcome to the picturesque Dimitsana! A medieval stone-build village in Arcadia, Peloponnese, Greece. Dimitsana is built on a mountain slope at an elevation of 950 meters. From its southern side a marvelous view of Megalopolis plain and Taygetus is provided. It is located 53 km east of Pyrgos, 31 km northwest of Tripoli, 23 km northwest of Megalopoli and 17 km northeast of Andritsaina. The village has a school, a historical library, several churches, a post office, an open-air water-power museum, an open amphitheater, hotels and a square.
This video features a walking tour in the streets of Dimitsana and amazing panoramic footage & timelapses. It also goes back in history and the year 1821 where the Greek Revolution against the Turks took place.
" Dimitsana played a significant role in the country’s struggle for self-determination. Its Greek school, founded in 1764, was an important spawning ground for the ideas leading to the uprising against the Turks.
Dimitsana’s best-known native son is none other than the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Grigorios V, who served as Archbishop of Constantinople at the beginning of the Revolution.
Blamed by the Turks for not effectively suppressing the uprising, the Patriarch was arrested and hanged. Gregory is revered as an Ethnomartyr of Greece.
His house had been restored and made into an Ecclesiastical museum, displaying pieces from surrounding monasteries and the churches of Dimitsana, with most of the items from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. "
