The most amazing aspect of Gavin's playing is not his technique or his excellent timing, but his ability to understand what rhythmic design should be played for the benefit of the song. That's called maturity and leaving your ego at the door to understand that the overall sound is more important than scoring points for amateur's critique on RU-vid.
Thats what we call "playing in the pocket" as drummers. Probably the most underrated but most important aspect of drumming in my eyes. Play what the Song needs, dont overplay, dont underplay. It's the understanding of musical harmonics and ryhtmic elevation of the Song. Kinda like "play to assist the other musicians in the song, dont try to dominate them"
Perfectly explained, just watched the ending of Finally Free very drum ending with Maningi on Live in London DVD, that what Mr. Mangisi has missing or lacking whatever you call.. You should feel the essence & soul and be part of with the music not push it to far or if you still want to do, please do it on the right approach like Portnoy or Gavin does
I agree, but what impresses me most about Mr. Harrison is the sound. His entire set sounds fantastic, but the toms are something really special. Btw, being moderate is something I've noticed that most young drummers have trouble achieving... especially when they get to a certain level and when their technique progresses and very few of them deal with the sound of the drums. They all play the same things and there isn’t some great originality here. Take, for example, Virgil Donati - a flawless drummer, perfect technique and limb independence, but where is the music? On the other hand, there's Nate Smith - groove, groove and just groove, without unnecessary showing off. Technique is essential, but it is a tool that allows us to express ourselves more easily and to get less tired while doing it.
Gavin Harrison ...is a living Mozart on drums ..one of the most melodic and musical drummers playing today in my opinion ...his playing keeps drawing you in and drawing you in more and more...simply hypnotic...
Definately. Gavin is one of the most 'colorful' drummers I've heard. There's hardly any drummer that can strike a balance between song-support and creative /inspirational playing.
I'm definitely jumping on the next porcupine tree concert if there ever is one. I love music so much but regretfully I've only ever seen one band and that's because they just so happened to play locally to me. I'm going to see VOLA in London later this year, and looking at seeing Steve Hackett as well - and that's only possible because the man is somehow still killing it 50 years later. I can't miss an opportunity to experience it, it's a shame there's nothing upcoming for PT
You are so much more than just a drummer Gavin. The world loves you brother. You will still be inspiring drummers 100 years from now. You are a legend in your own time! Thank you for all that you have contributed to music. You have given so much of yourself and we are all extremely grateful.
This song is one of the greatest songs ever made. And the fact that Gavin plays the drums hugely contributes to the eerie feeling of it. Masterpiece and heavenly
One of my favorite things about Gavin is he lays back on the beat, in such an incredible way, you anticipate and anticipate and then he drops it perfectly, the cup chimes really demonstrate this ability to nail the accents in such a manner that elevates the entire feel of the song. Another aspect is his kick drumming, he will pick up the notes in perfect spots and lay them in a way you're not expecting, I simply love his drumming and he is a huge inspiration to me, this band is amazing but when you pick Gavin Harrison, your inviting all the drummers of the world to enjoy your music so obviously there is a lot of drummers commenting on Gavin and not the band, we all love the band too, but Gavin is what we are here for lol
The amount of emotional maturity and professionalism it takes to play with closed hats after that amazing drop at 8:28 is a level I have never experienced in my life
Honestly I think the live version of this is better than the studio. The mixing is immaculate, the drums sound even more expressive and Bruce's voice sounds even more powerful. Fantastic work!
Gavin Harrison is constantly brushing against the walls of perfection. His performance speaks all languages, satisfies all minds, delights all imaginations.
I don't even know that I can single individual songs out from 'Your Wilderness' personally... the whole album is so good from start to finish! Definitely one of my favorite albums, that's for sure. I love that it isn't a very long album either, by today's standards. It may not be 80 minutes long, but every moment is filled with musical creativity and beauty, and it makes its point without excess. I remember when I first got the album and listened to 'In Exile.' I had a big smile on my face that didn't leave for the duration of the whole album. 😀
Over nine minutes of finesse, musicality, and atomic clock like timing with plenty of gas left, chops, and on the spot creativity to end a magnificent PT song with a fitting flourish. Thanks again GH for the inspiration.
From someone learning to play the drums, this guy is such an inspiration. If one day I could end up with a tiny fraction of Gavin's ability, that'll be a really good day.
Practice, practice and practice some more. There's a good livestream of him discussing that he would practice for many hours a day for years. The more practice and fluidity, technique, you have the easier it is to play to the music when it becomes an extension of yourself rather than a forcing of your body to try and keep to the music. Let it flow out of your soul, the more fluid you become the easier it is to do just that!
Gavin is a great drummer. But don't get lost, listen to all the drummers, and learn the different styles. There's no sense in listening to this guy if you don't know people like Jo Jones or Steve Gadd. And sorry, but this music is not so good. Don't listen to a music because of the drummer. Listen to Miles, Duke, or Chick.
@@ofdrumsandchords Gavin Harrison absolutely elevates this song and makes it fun to listen to. His style is similar to Danny Carey's to my ear. And his kit sounds amazing like Bonham's Ludwig kit.
@@ofdrumsandchords I listen to what inspires me to learn more about the fine art of drumming. What inspires me could be completely different from what someone else deems "inspirational". I fully understand your point regarding listening to and learning from different artists and styles, but saying this music is "not so good" is purely a matter of opinion.
What a great drummer! He elevates the music. They are so lucky they have him. Always enjoy watching and hearing him. Because of following Gavin I have discovered a Pineapple Thief.
Gavin is one of the best drummers I’ve ever heard from anything to Jazz to rock he can surely do it excellent. And I’ve heard a lot of drummers in my time being in bands and watching other drummers I’m ready to hit 70 years old and still he’s younger than me and this guy is really good.
A band is only as good as it's drummer.. Gavin adds the most aurally satisfying, creative, unique, rhythmic layers to each and every song He never overplays or overpowers a song, he allows every song to fully breathe while adding perfectly placed fills with solid, yet nuanced drumming He is a true master of his craft and a consummate professional
I saw The Pineapple Thief headline HRH Prog at Shepherd's Bush in October 2019. It was the cleanest, clearest drum mix I have ever heard at any live gig. Kudos to their sound engineer (and of course to Gavin for his top notch playing).
Gavin, your every cell reverberates music. Not just the best drummer but the best musician in this whole Universe. More Love, support and Power to you 😇.
This solo contains so much impressions of Buckethead. The one from the album is pure joy to listen to. especially with the uplifting rhythm and how Gavin expresses on drums. Love it
An amazing live version of an amazing and moving song. Your Wilderness is one of my favourite albums of all time and that's why I'm so glad I bought Where We Stood a few months ago. To me the only "fault" in this version is that Darren didn't nail the solo as it appears in the studio... But it's a little price to pay! And Mr. Harrison... What can I say? Easily the most influential musician in my style of playing drums!
Have an I been under a rock!! Just discovered this band and WOW. they are great. It makes me mad how the main stream controls things and guys like this really gotta work for everything when they are way better than most anything on the radio.
That ascending tom fill about 5 bars in too. If you play drums, his free course on Drumeo is really good, dudes a creative machine. It would probably be worth watching the paid one too. Just waiting on my edrum kit myself. My acoustic kit is too small and I start running out of toms real fast lol, plus those pesky neighbors.
Not many talented bands as this. And even fewer that can create a song like this! Incredible to see/hear a drummer like this. It's few and far between. Thanks for uploading this live version of this awesome song Gavin.
I really love this direction they took away from the rock sound. It really works for them and their musical ideas. They use simplicity to create what these songs become, which are layered and really just genius compositions.
I was introduced to The Pineapple Thief via Gavin, having heard him previously with Porcupine Tree. What I love about TPT is that Bruce's songwriting is deeper, less dark and subtler than Steven Wilson's. And he's a better vocalist. Gavin's role is different too - more restrained, more focused on backing the music. Excellent stuff. Saw them live in 2019 in Montreal. Hope to see them again in the future.
I think therefore i feel the orchestra feel of the solitude of the music gives a flow for drumming and the tone of the tune.. it sends a vibe like Sound of Muzak. Very majestic
Unbelievably complicated !! the changes and verses.. nice sound... I love the way he tunes hi drums... the deeps are really center of your chest pounding deep
I finally got to see you, Gavin, play for the first time in April 2022 in Orlando, FL. This song in particular was something I was highly anticipating and you nailed it. Thank you for your time and talent!
What a great and flawless live performance. The song is such a nicely woven interplay of each musician's intricate start and stop placements, with Bruce and Jon doubling registers, and... wow. The dynamics in TPT have always just been incredible. I'm Gob smacked. Having moved on to listening to newer stuff from TPT, then hearing this YW song live brought back memories of cruising in my car in that summer. Hoping for some Canadian Dates for the next TPT tour, it was great meeting Gavin at his clinic here in Winnipeg back in the PT days.
Excellent Gavin, love your drumming! Through Porcupine Tree I became aware of you a few years ago and immediately took you into my heart all together. Super performance also here with The Pineapple Thief. Best regards from Berlin!
Nope. My fascination with Gavin started with a live show recording of Porcupine Tree on German TV. After that I listened countless times to the album Deadwing. Then the other albums followed. What a brilliant band, what a gifted drummer. Currently CLOSURE / CONTINUATION is playing over and over again... 😉 Have a nice christmas time and all the best for 2023! Frank
This song was sculpted to perfection!! Everything sits perfectly in harmony! Being a drummer myself, I’m drawn to your drumming Gavin but your advice down through the years has made me listen to every little nuance when playing or writing music myself. Thank you 🙏
i think Gavin is the perfect example of that talent is not only some skill you were born with. it takes so much time and dedication and maturing to become this complete. talent is mostly the love for your craft and the will to focus for hours and hours on your weaknesses, if you asked me... but i can only imagine.😅
This song is a masterpiece, it has everything. All the instruments and vocals just piece together perfectly, kudos to the sound techs and the producers as well.
A mesmerizing performance here...your creativity is beyond belief .Watching you perform makes me motivated to keep drumming up in the loft ..Thanks for the inspiration ✌
Imagine this band getting together and brainstorming what to call themselves .. and one of them says "you know, i steal pineapples. Maybe we can do something with that ?"
