Nanjing Niu Shou Mountain is located in Jiangning District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. It is a famous Buddhist mountain and also a tourist attraction integrating natural scenery and cultural landscape. Niu Shou Mountain is named because of its two peaks facing each other on the top of the mountain, which resembles the double horns of a bull's head. It is also called Niutou Mountain by the people.
Niu Shou Mountain has an altitude of 242.9 meters and an area of about 5 square kilometers. The mountain is mainly composed of Mesozoic igneous rocks, with rich landforms, and belongs to the southern branch of the western section of Ningzhen Hills. The area has a subtropical monsoon humid climate, mild climate, an average annual temperature of 15.7℃, a long frost-free period, and an average annual precipitation of 1072.9 mm.
Niu Shou Mountain not only has beautiful natural scenery and is known as the "Spring Niu Shou", but also has rich cultural resources. The mountain has the Niu Shou Mountain Forest Park, a provincial forest park in Jiangsu Province, and the Niu Shou Mountain Cultural Tourism Area, a national 4A-level tourist attraction in China. There are historical and cultural relics such as the Buddha's Head Temple, the Buddha's Head Pagoda, the Buddha's Head Palace, Yue Fei's Anti-Jin Fortress, cliff carvings, Hongjue Temple Pagoda, and Zheng He Cultural Park.
It is particularly worth mentioning that Niu Shou Mountain is the place where the Niutou School of Chinese Zen Buddhism was founded and born. The main buildings such as the Buddha's Head Temple, the Buddha's Head Pagoda, and the Buddha's Head Palace not only show the profound heritage of Buddhist culture, but also present a new landscape of contemporary architectural art. In 2015, the skull relic of Sakyamuni Buddha was officially enshrined in the Buddha's Head Palace on Niu Shou Mountain, making Niu Shou Mountain one of the important heritages of the world's Buddhist culture.
