9:58 I think in this case it doesn't mean that "Weathering refers to the chemical composition of these steels, allowing them to exhibit increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to other steels." -Wikipedia
One thing I never understood in Fallout 4 is why the energy pistols did more damage than their rifle varients when you have all of their respective perks.
nothing about that game makes sense... all full auto does piss damage when firing speed isn;t what harms damage, it's accuracy i shit you not, if you take a MP5 put it on single fire it's accurate and does really good damage, put it on full auto and steady it, you can control it, do burst fire and it's still the exact same damage as semi auto, whoever programmed that is a moron guns were markedly better in F3 and some were full auto and did tremendous damage! again whoever programmed gun damage/stats in F4 was asleep at the wheel i could rant all day but this will be my repot lol
Because the pistol variants are basically rifle variants. The crafting system in Fallout 4 allows certain weapons to benefit from both rifle perks and pistol perks simply by being stockless. Just like how explosive perks benefit certain special firearms. If you think about it energy weapons were meant to be "future" prewar tech that the BoS feels is too powerful for mankind to wield. The issue is more due to perk stacking than anything. If you think that's bad I've done melee builds that basically let you one shot behemoths with stock perks and no mods.
There’s something charming about how chonky the 10mm pistol is in fallout games, even when real 10mm handguns look far more like typical pistols you’d see in the real world. I think the chonk gives it character and all in all makes it fitting to be the most iconic gun in the series.
Glad some enjoy it! Something about it’s design to me just feels completely animated. Like they were going for over-the-top 80’s action pistol. Very reminiscent of Judge Dredd’s pistols or something from Bladerunner. Ultimately it’s too gawdy for me to use them on average, I downloaded a mod that turns the Deliverer into a more universal handgun for everyone to use. Now everyone has a concealed hand canon like it’s Detroit
@@Nightshade31401 I’ve tried modding that thing in-game every which way to look like a “normal pistol” The best way to enjoy it is use it as is, I usually add the heavy front-end, extended clip and make it full auto. I usually only pull it out when I know I’m going to play an Institute mission since it’s futuristic looking!
A note about That Gun/5.56 Pistol: Because its based on the Blade Runner blaster, it should be noted that the Blade Runner blaster aka M2019 Detective Special aka Pflager-Katsumata D, is itself a Hollywood armorer modified Steyr-Mannlicher .222 Model SL rifle that was made to look like a revolver for the movie, which is why the origins of the 5.56 Pistol in Fallout is a story of a rifle that needed to be made into a pistol, it is also why, in-game, the gun uses 5.56/.223 ammo because its the closest in-game ammo resembling the proprietary .222 Steyr-Mannlicher cartridge
The 10mm pistol in Fallout 3 has a Inertia Piston at the very bottom, basically a heavy piece of metal with a spring that soaks recoil, in the real world the FK BRNO in 7.5mm has it under the barrel and not exposed and the Ar15 as it but for slowing down the bolt carrier but some products can reduce the recoil with a stiffer spring or heavy buffer
The AR-15 buffer acts more like a deadblow hammer than anything. On the rearward travel the buffer adds more mass to reduce the cyclic speed, as you said, and on the return stroke it provides several small impacts to the bolt carrier to prevent it from bouncing out of battery. It doesn't necessarily act as a piston in any way.
The Kriss Vector actually has very little to no recoil because of something like this (I'm pretty sure, my gun nerd-ing is mostly focused on the Cold War, LOL)
@amhuman5138 the vector kicks like a mule. It's insane fire rate makes sure of that lol. But for 9mm/45acp 1000+rpm it's pretty mild. Without the system the 45 would have you shooting the sky. It's part of why the Tommy gun and alot of old 45smgs where so heavy. Without the bulk they would be difficult to hold steady
That gun is a favorite, I honestly also enjoy the 10mm pistol for some reason. I guess I'm one of 12. But for some reason, in fallout 4, every playthrough I start, one of the first guns I find is an explosive pipe pistol. And every playthrough, it stays in my inventory.
Nah, you're fine. The standard 10mm Pistol is absolutely great in New Vegas and can carry you all the way to mid-game pretty much by itself. That Gun and the 12.7mm Pistol (especially Li'l Devil) basically just serve as your "Next Level" when it comes to pistols in general; once the 10mm finally gets outclassed, you upgrade to something meaner :D Basically, I loved the guns in New Vegas. I was super depressed to see so many of them get left behind once Fallout 4 came out.
I like to think the little bottle thing on the N99 is an oil/tool bottle doubling as a compensator weight, reminiscent of the practice of keeping a maintenance kit in the buttstock of a rifle; the gun in lore is described as being an easily well maintained pistol by anyone with even just basic knowledge of firearms, so if it even comes with its own cleaning kit, that's a step in that direction.
If I remember right, (keep in mind that this is off memory), the square-ish look of the 10mm pistol is based off the MK.23 SOCOM. With the underside of the pistol reflecting the massive LAM module it came with.
"But Joshua doesn't have to compensate for anything," you're damn right he doesn't. I wish there was a special dialogue if you bring A Light to fight Caesar and tell him something like: "The Malpais Legate says 'Hello'" right before you shoot him.
I know a lot of people don't care for it, but the Fallout 3 and New Vegas 10mm pistol is an iconic design to me and will always have a special place in my heart. It's a shame to see what they did to it in Fallout 4. I also always assumed that the little "cO2" cylinder on the bottom was actually a laser light. But New Vegas proved me wrong, being that the laser removes the cylinder. So my best guess is that it's a gas or buffer tube to dampen recoil.
plus who else thought that the game would have more in the arsenal? more calibers and ammo types as well as a lot of weapon types. example, keep laser pistol and laser rifle, same for the plasma pistol and rifle, plus more cool stuff. edit. plus balistic ammo pistols can be used only by normal people while SMG or Pistol carbine types can be used by both normal and Power armor and Super mutant sized enemies as well.
While back in 2007 I did originally think the 10mm design was a bit too blocky and bulky, once I started playing Fallout 4 I immediately regretted that opinion. Sure, the shooting mechanics in Fallout 4 are better, but the actual gun designs themselves just look abysmal. Outside of a select few that were practically impossible to fuck up (the Deliverer is a good example) everything just looked overly-complicated for the sake of "FUTURE DESIGN!" or out-and-out *ugly* like the 3D model designers were cross-eyed at the time.
I think the weathered 10mm pistol probably belonged to the vault dweller from fallout 1 since he wouldve been using it a lot during his travels for the water chip and probably sold it for a better gun.
I think the cylinder on the bottom of the N99 may be a Mercury vial to help mitigate felt recoil. Similar to a system used in McCann Garand rifles chambered .458 Winchester Magnum.
@@sgtmuffinbadger6147 define "common" I know they existed, but I don't think they ever really caught on. Maybe they were popular in competitive shooting? I've seen some insane race guns.
I just realized the 10mm they use in the fallout show is just the 10mm from fallout 1 and 2, which makes sense since the show takes place in the same area as those games. Thats really good detailing
I think the 10 mm is mag fed, but the cylinder rotates picking up the next round hold it then dumps it after its been shot out the other side.this would allow it to not need to cycle without a slide and still be mag feed.
I was looking for this comment 😄 I think so, too. The back of it looks exactly like the Welrod MkII, even with the same shape of the bolt. The Welrod is also integrally suppressed, just like the gun in the game, while the Ruger is not.
In terms of the cylinder on the bottom of the FO3 10mm, the first think that came to mind was the stinger and its radon gas cartridges. Basically you pop a cartridge onto it, the gas immediately supercools the internals. While it wouldn’t require to be super cooled, maybe the 10m has something like that in lieu of an exchangeable barrel. Or, the more “realistic” option is potentially some pressurized cylinder to potentially contain some of the gas bleed off to help with recoil, sound suppression, and it stays contained in order to be used in assisting with cycling in more adverse conditions like clearing icing, mud, sand, or buildup since the gun is certainly designed to last the operator for very extended periods. (Kind of like the Offensive Handgun Weapon System program which spawned the MK23)
_Great glowing day!_ I needed this today, man. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these excellent lore videos. 47:22 I would guess the _SS_ is an allusion to SIG-Sauer
A guns "receiver" is the gun frame or body itself. Saying you swapped out a receiver is like saying you swapped out a whole car body. At this point its an entirely different car and there's no way around that.
Im sure someone has already said this but the colt 45 in tatctia and the .45 auto i belive are both based on the 1911 and colt 45 is actually just a colical name for the single action army or potentially any fire arm chambered in 45 long colt
My thoughts on the cylinder on the bottom of the 10mm is that it’s a fold down core grip for full auto fire. 4 and 76 do show us that auto variants exist.
10:24 I think that the Weathered 10mm Pistol is *supposed* to be The Vault Dwellers Colt 6520, although due to time constraints they did not model the weapon as such. I think this because when you are given the couriers stash items the Weathered 10mm is added with the other "Classic Pack" items, i.e the armored vault 13 jumpsuit and the trusty vault 13 canteen
Funny you should bring that up about plinking. The term has come to mean shooting casually for fun but it does come from AD. Topperwein and his wife known as Plinky and at the time was onomatopoeia for the sound of a 22 hitting a tin can. So saying it is the perfect way to describe shooting a 22 is literally the origin of the term.
the front heavy 10mm design with an additional counterweight under it, similar to the front heaviness you’d see in the 12.7mm smg and some other weapons, is all about reducing muzzle-flip for a round with a strong recoil. when you fire the gun, it wants to push the front up. if front is heavy, this is easier to make it not do.
The canister on the front ofbtheb10mm at my best gust is likely ballast to balance recoil to improve accuracy. Even switching it out to a laser sight in Vegas, weight disruption could be considered the same if not similar.
One other thing to add, the weathered 10mm pistol in New vegas is one of the few unique weapons in new vegas that can be equipped with mods, however the mods don’t show up on the pistol itself so this is likely a bug, but still, if you want to upgrade it, it becomes a pretty decent early-mid game weapon
Actually, for the mauser, having a 4ap cost in fo1 is a HUGE benefit because that means you don't have to have 10 agility or a certain build to shoot it twice, unlike with the 10mm. You're not gonna be using either for very long, but I always use the mauser early on if I have the ammo
Bet the CO2 thing is an optional barrel-cleaning aide or something like that. And it looks like it might help with balance, so everyone that uses the 10 mm. Keeps it?
i like to think the dlc junk you get at the start of the game were what you were couriering before getting shot. maybe these items would be given to people throughout the mojave? but of course getting 2 bullets in the brain means we've forgotten these deliveries.
I had a glitch last time i played Honest Hearts and Joshua wouldnt switch from the Pistol Whippin 45, so watching him smack tribals in the face across the canyon was quite interesting
I always interpreted the cylinder on the bottom of the n99 as a c02 canister that aids in the firing mechanism, making it shoot faster. Though it seems that a lot of people who looked at it believe it's a laser emitter (evidently,a broken one, since it can be replaced)
I like to think that "That gun" is quite literally the gun the Vault Dweller was given, he was a wasteland legend yes, but in the grand scheme of things he could have just easily discarded a gun from what in a meta and in-universe sense was a "side-quest" on his story, would be funny to see how it got to Novac, like, little short fan movie that is just a series of vignettes of the little gun's journey.
53:28 the one here from van buren is a bit hard to identify, but it definitely has the grip panels from an hk p7, the frame and slide looks closer to a high power though, with some kind of large barrel wedged between them.
The small CO2 cartridge under the barrel of the 10mm reminds of the pressure chamber in the HK SMG 2. So maybe its designed to make the normally supersonic cartridge, subsonic bfor use with suppressors.
Regarding the Weathered 10mm from NV: Like everything in the Courier's Stash, it was originally a preorder bonus. Depending on what retailer you got your copy of NV from, you got a different set of gear. This was part of the Classic Pack set of equipment, that included an armored Vault 13 suit (from the end of the F1), 50 10mm rounds, 5 stimpacks and a Vault 13 Flask. I believe that is supposed to imply the weathered 10mm traces back to Vault 13 as well, perhaps even the Vault Dweller themselves. I believe this set was from GameStop in the US. I recall in my first playthrough putting a suppressor on the weathered 10mm made the model disappear.
If I was still a game dev AND a gunt nut, I'd say that on the Desert Eagle looking 10mm, that little cartridge-looking thing on the bottom front would be either a. a compensator of some sort for better accuracy when shooting or b. some kind of fold out fore grip like on some berettas for fast shooting. It could also be some kind of laser sight that simply lost power over the centuries and there's probably just as much evidence for it being that.
The cylinder might be a gas and counterweight piston operated recoil stabilizer. Part of the gas would be used to push a heavy piston forward. This would push the pistol back and twist it downwards.
Planker rounds are generally called that cause they're target rounds. So on steel targets they'll make a satisfying PLANK noise. Although that's the terminology I'm used to however. It a decently accurate depiction of a lot of .22s especially if they're suppressed. You mostly just hear bolt noises at that point.
I think the cylindrical object on the 10mm in Fallout 3 is probably supposed to be a weight for recoil mitigation. Lots of custom competition pistols will have systems like that to fine-tune the shooting experience, and I think it could be plausible within the setting to introduce a crude system like "a drum that you can put lead weights into that screws onto the bottom of the gun", as opposed to various muzzle devices that would take more engineering for what is generally one of the weaker guns out in the wastelands. I have a couple of 10mm pistols irl and it's a pretty heavy recoiling round if you're not used to shooting it so that'd be my main guess (although as beefy as that gun looks I think it would be pretty smooth shooting even without adding additional weights lol).
Here’s a theory for the mauser being called the M96, it could be a modernized version of the gun (at least relatively speaking) and that’s why it isn’t considered ancient. This has at least some basis in reality since a lot of AK-47s today are actually AKMs, the M of course standing for modernized. Same basic construction just using different techniques more friendly to mass production
maybe that little CO2 cartridge looking thing at the bottom is a maintenance/cleaning kit for the gun. Having the tools to clean a gun be kept with the gun isn't unheard of
10mm is a strong, solid caliber but in Fallout its always been presented as a weakling. Id love to see the next fallout have a mid game 10mm and a nv style 9mm pistol or the pipe revolver .38
I wish there was a variant of some pistol that had a suppressor, scope, and stock, fired explosive radiation rounds, and was called the "Megaton". If anyone thinks that's too on-the-nose, Fallout isn't exactly a subtle franchise lmao
I know it waa a mistake but there is a magazine fed revolver in real life called the Dardick. Its cylinder only holds three rounds but whenever the cylinder rotates a new cartridge is taken from the magazine. Its an odd looking gun and my explanation doesnt really do it justice. Forgotten weapons has done a video on it
3:50. This cylindric object attached to the 10mm pistol looks like a red dot laser to me. A fragile stock attachment which failed first after harsh wasteland treatment.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess the "Co2 tank" is a buffer system. Gas follows the projectile down the barrel, rides a channel through a block, and tank "for whatever reason" and pushes a spring back to cycle the next round.
Perhaps the Fallout 4 10mm version is a revision that was being tested in the New England Commonwealth amongst police, the Army, and the National Guard for occupation reasons. It stands to reason that a shorter-barreled and lighter version of the N99 10mm would be better for mass production, especially for places where you aren't as likely to need heavier firepower.
As a little fun fact I’d like to address that having a magazine isn’t impossible for a revolver. There are actually a handful of real life magazine fed revolvers that are rather fascinating firearms for anyone even remotely into weird guns.
The alloy steel and Dragoon versions of weapons look like thair simulation counterparts. Maybe these weapons were supposed to appear in the armory after finishing the dlc.
I wondered if the gas canister thing on the 10mm was maybe a recoil dampening device but then seeing that it can be replaced with a laser and have the same recoil, I haven’t a clue what it’s for. Maybe Fallout is weird and they had a prewar doctrine of holding the underside of the frame seeing as the front barrel assembly doesn’t move, the weapon is certainly big enough.
