Hammer Studio's only foray into the world of zombies acts as an entertaining stepping stone between the voodoo zombies of White Zombie and I Walked With a Zombie and the reanimated "ghouls" of George Romero's groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead, which arrived only two years after Hammer's sole zombie film.

Always remembered this clamshell vhs when hammer had all those collectors edition releases back in the mid 90s. Was always curious about this movie until I finally watched it a few years ago. Really really dug it, and wish I hadn't put it off for so long. This is a REAL zombie movie... voodoo slaves used to do the bidding of the movies baddy, some younger fans may not even know this is what zombies were before Romeo flipped it on it's head. Welcome back Andrew.

I've got a real soft spot for OG voodoo zombies, which explains why it drives me mad that The Serpent and the Rainbow has become a sort of forgotten Wes Craven movie.

Nicely reviewed. It's a decent little film this. You pointed out quite a few elements to it I'd forgotten.

And welcome back to the classics ! I can still remember seeing this first run on a double bill with "Dracula - Prince of Darkness". And being surprised that I liked Plague even more than Dracula. Not to take anything away from Christopher Lee and company. But the simple fact is - I could go all fanboy over DPOD , whereas POTZ just scared the crap out of me. In fact, it gave me nightmares. And it is still effective. They certainly knew how to tell a story in those days.

DPOD has a secret weapon in Barbara Shelley. She carries that movie until Lee arrives and then holds her own alongside him. Without her I think I'd like it a lot less.

Oooh missed these Hammer reviews. I watched it fairly recently last year for the first time. I enjoyed it a hell of a lot. It's kinda cool to have a Zombie story where the principle of Zombies is scary enough and it explores the horrors of such through mostly the character work. Although that being said, I'd have adored to have more Hammer Zombie films where we see more of them.

I love the synchronicity, in that I was *just* talking about Dracula movies / tv shows that deal with vampirism in all but the name. So very happy to see you back from your holiday! What a delightful, insightful review of this portal into the world of Hammer.

Great to see you back Andrew. I love Plague of the Zombies. A creepy, colourful film with some terrific imagery. I also adore Blake’s 7. Jacqueline Pearce as you know was also in another favourite Hammer film of mine The Reptile. Great review.

The Reptile was shot back to a back with a Plague of Zombies. I can't remember if I've reviewed that or not...

Look past the low budget and the stories and characters are amazing. Farscape and Firefly both borrow from Blake's 7.

Great video!! I remember this coming out as a double bill, it might've been with a Dracula film. The film is definitely creepy and has that spooky atmosphere that Hammer was known for. Love the videos, keep up the great work!!

I really don't care for zombie movies - I find the modern ones to be as dull as ditchwater. Sorry, but that's how it is. However, a few do appeal to me: 'White Zombie'; 'I Walked With A Zombie'; and 'Plague Of The Zombies'. The latter being my favourite of all. No brain eating here, but, thanks I believe, to Roy Ashton, the first properly unpleasant living dead in cinema. The first shot of one, played by Ben Aris giving that really unpleasant metallic laugh as he hurls down the Doctor's wife from the pit head gear, and those white poached fish eyes. An indelible image. And, like Hammer's other wonderful 'Cornish Gothic', 'The Reptile' (👌), the great Michael Ripper is given a good role, again showing what a good solid actor he was. The first zombie movie to show the things emerging from their graves, too - albeit in a dream sequence, it looks deliciously horrid. It's a proper zombie film, with the undead being used as cheap labour in a Stannary. Other than that, the only other zombie movies I have enjoyed, were 'The Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue', simply because it's batshit crazy, and actually lives up to the hype given it in horror movie books, and 'Tombs Of The Blind Dead', which I saw at the cinema with some friends whilst I wasn't feeling very well. It infected my dreams for months afterwards. I often wonder if that's where the Monty Python team got the idea for Sir Lancelot - you see him, miles off, running towards the castle, but getting no nearer, then suddenly he attacks the gate guards ("Did you kill those guards? They cost fifty pounds each!") Or was it the other way round? The blind Templars seem to teleport - a safe distance away, and then they're on you.

One of Hammer's best! Andre Morell is always good value, conveying a sense of empathy despite being a bit of a bossy know-it-all in this. An intense performance from the actor playing the big baddie too. I'd slightly differentiate between Squire Hamilton's status as being part of the landed gentry and Sir Henry being someone who has (perhaps) been awarded his rank through his medical service(?) which humanises him to an extent and helps to make him seem more caring towards others. The scene where he shoves the knife in the neck of the henchman by the log fire seems to be duplicated in Billie Holliday's demonic nurse demise in The Omen a few years later (or maybe that's just me). Watch out for one of the voodoo acolyte extras on the drums in the opening credits turning to the audience ("are the cameras still running?!"). Made back-to-back with another favourite of mine The Reptile which shared some cast members and sets in a cost-saving measure. And where can I get hold of one of those cute miniature coffins complete with voodoo doll to keep in my desk drawer?!

You're right, of course. Watching back in editting I realised I misspoke when I labelled everyone upper class as the "aristocracy" but sometimes in the rush of babble I lose some nuance.
@chrisjackson5210
@chrisjackson5210 7 месяцев назад
It's quite a heady stew of socio-politics in this one, isn't it? By the way I meant Billie Whitelaw not Holliday in The Omen, that would've been quite something! Getting old. @@GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse

D'ya know: I was just thinking about this film lately & wether any good reviewers were going to do a spot on it. & here it is BINGO 😂 I absolutely LOVE this flick which can only really be appreciated in the heat of an English midsummer. Watched it during Summer '22 & really gave me the right vibes. Just a beautiful movie & one I missed & wished I hadn't. "Squire Hamilton" was the same guy who played one of the 3 Victorian "gentleman" in Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970) & I immediately recognized him as I love this later Hammer film so much. Getting it on BluRay (Plague of Zombies).

Loved this film, Hammer only dabbled with this and werewolves once with Curse of the Werewolf. It's surprising looking back now because they're both some of their best films. I guess Dracula was making more money. Enjoyed the review and I completely agree, a Hammer movie does feel like a warm blanket on a cold night or something like that.

I agree 100%. I'm sure I put out a video about Curse of the Werewolf ages ago and no doubt I gushed about it. That film may even have my favourite werewolf design of all time. So yes, while they only did 1 werewolf and 1 zombie movie I think they nailed them both.

I definitely need to see this movie. And you've also reminded me that I need to see White Zombie. It's been on my to-watch list for decades, but somehow I've yet to see it! Also, I'm curious if you saw the new Dario Argento documentary, Panico, and what you thought.
