The North American X-15 stands as a towering achievement in the chronicles of aerospace innovation, embodying the relentless quest for speed and the daring spirit of exploration that would take it to the edge of space.
Emerging in the late 1950s as Cold War tensions drove the United States’ thirst for technology, this sleek, rocket-powered pioneer set new benchmarks in aviation, reaching dizzying altitudes of over 350,000 feet and speeds of Mach 6.7, a record that has not been broken to this day.
But this extraordinary aircraft was not just about raw power; it was a sophisticated machine, its resilient Inconel-X alloy and innovative control systems specially designed to withstand the intense heat and stress of its high-speed missions.
As one of the first reusable aircraft capable of reaching the outer limits of Earth’s atmosphere, the X-15 provided invaluable data on hypersonic flight, reentry, and high-altitude operations, paving the way for future space endeavors, including the Space Shuttle. Piloted by some of the most skilled aviators in history, including Neil Armstrong and Pete Knight, the X-15 program was a testament to human ingenuity.

X15 was no were near the first AC to transmit telemetry in real time. It was SOP for Flight Test. My father was first Test Engineer to do Radio Telemetered flight testing. He invented the techniques, methods and procedures to use the sensory system he had invented in 1941. Dad ran Grumman Aircraft's, later Grumman Aerospace's, Flight Test Department.

I think the point was more about advanced telemetry. Speed and altitude is one thing that is simple and as you say has been done for a long time. It was also analog data. The number of data points that were recorded for the x-15 were substantial. It was the beginning of data gathering in the digital age that was outside a lab.

Most of the jet & space technology came from Germany, the United States & Russia confiscated them after the war.. Of course we like to take credit for it but not all technology was solely from the U.S.

I remember seeing this on Discovery channel. But before that saw it live on tv when it flew. The media heard about it. And aired it live. Including when the X15 that broke in half as it touched down. Why doesn't anyone show that anymore. The pilot was unharmed.
@x15galmichelleevans
@x15galmichelleevans 2 месяца назад
There was coverage of the early part of the X-15 program in the newspapers and on newsreel footage. Some of that was also shown on the news, but no flight was ever broadcast live, including the incident on flight 4 when the fuselage broke upon landing. In fact there is only a few seconds of footage of that landing because the cameraman ran out of film just as the X-15 touched down on the lakebed at Rosamond Dry Lake, west of Edwards AFB. Almost all coverage of the X-15 by the media stopped after the Mercury astronauts started flying into space. The NASA director of the X-15 program, Paul Bikle, talked to me about how happy he was when the media left Edwards to go to Florida so that they were all then out of his hair, and they could get on with the program.

The flight occurred on 5 November 1959 with pilot Scott Crossfield flying in aircraft number 2. It was the 3rd powered flight of the X-15 program. There was a flaw in the nose gear, and because of that flaw and the overweight landing because he was unable to jettison the excess fuel after a fire occurred in the engine compartment, the X-15 broke behind the cockpit at touchdown. It actually caused very little damage to the airframe. It was was easily repaired by North American Aviation, and returned to flight in just over 3 months on 11 February 1960.

Yep, the US has pilots who flew at hypersonic speeds since the 1960s.
@x15galmichelleevans
@x15galmichelleevans 2 месяца назад
They did indeed fly at hypersonic speeds in the 1960s. There were a total of 110 flights at hypersonic velocity during the X-15 program out of a total of 199 flights. No one has flown in an aircraft at hypersonic velocity since the X-15 program ended. The last such hypersonic flight was flown by pilot Bill Dana on 24 October 1968. On that day he flew to Mach 5.38.
@JohnSmith-pc3gc
@JohnSmith-pc3gc 2 месяца назад
There is mention of a huge force needed to travel at hypersonic speeds. If the atmosphere is a hundred times thinner, one might suspect that it takes a lot less force to push through the atmosphere regardless of mysterious supersonic effects. They need a lot of force to accelerate the plane to high velocity to get enough lift in such thin air. They need to do it quickly. If they used solar energy to heat up the air in a ram jet, they might be able to gradually increase the velocity and altitudwith a much less powerful engine. If there is no fuel weight and a ram jet weighs so much less than a regular jet or rocket engine, the lift drag would be much less. A solar powered ram jet plane might fly into space.
