Ya, I was thinking that for a few seconds. But, remembering that I tend to answer rhetorical questions, I suspended my logic and just went along for the ride. I wasn't disappointed.
I'm Australian and I thought "That platypus looks a bit f'd up" and yep it sure is. I'd probably look f'd to if I could chew through tree trunks with my giant "ass teeth" and someone say me doing it....
The fact that he usually accidentally says the creature has a butt-something and then has to correct himself, but did it backwards this time in a video about a backwards animal, is like Deadpool-levels of meta.
I love how the conspiracy isn't "a platypus is just a backwards beaver," it's the arguably more far-fetched "a beaver is just a backwards platypus with giant ass teeth."
And the irony is ass teeth are an actual thing...sort of. It's mainly a thing with sea cucumbers, who use them as a kind of no tresspassing defense against pearl fish aiming to use them as a kind of literal hidey hole.
If I had a nickel for every time zefrank narrated over reversed footage of an animal's butt, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's great that it's happened twice.
As an Australian, I am horrified at the amount of time I spent thinking how I must have only ever seen female platypuses, because the males bill and body is so much larger than I ever knew! Well played Sir… Well played!
@@flowerheit4512 I mean, that ending "...Jerry..." reminded me of when you're annoyed at your loved one's antics. I'm telling you, that ostrich baby walking for the first time was actually part of Jerry's mating ritual.
I was like, "that's a pretty large bill..." and, "I don't really see his eyes..." but I never thought once that it wasn't a platypus ! You totally got me.
To be honest do not know the platypus well enough. The backwards legs thew me off and missing eyes other than maybe they were under the fur.... This had me questioning what little I know about them... lol Nicely done as always!!!!
That got me to thinking about how easy it is to suspend disbelief in what we see if an event has enticing narrative. It is a powerful tool of statecraft and politics. Well played Zefrank.
The power of narrative. I could even see eyes on each side of its “beak”. Then, upon the reveal, the eyes just disappeared. How many people are on death row because of eyewitness testimony? Might want to revisit that one.
There are currently two beavers on Death Row that eyewitnesses misidentified as platypuses. The last platypus execution was in 1998, following the infamous Rooter’s Creek Marsupial Massacre of 1995.
@@bunnyborg I know, I know. That’s just instantly where my mind went. Likely, a result of my own life’s experience. I can’t even watch cute animal videos without seeing through the Matrix, heh.
I really appreciate that Jerry and Zefrank have been collaborating for so long! With everyone else breaking up, it’s nice to see a partnership stay together 🥰
The amount of joy I took in showing this video to my husband without context and watching his mind be blown by this absurd and adorable animal he’d never heard of is cruel. He fully fell for it. He even got a pouty lip/upset at the Tasmanian devils that were going to hurt the eyeless and defenseless platypus. His reaction was so sincere and invested and precious that I wish I had filmed it. I know I married well and he definitely could have done better
What's really bizarre is you can almost see eyes next to the "bill", to the point that even after I realized what was going on, I still wasn't sure that some of the clips weren't of actual platypuses.
To me it looked like a beaver's ass the entire time, and nothing else. It was funny to pretend it was a forward platypus, but I didn't actually see it. XD
"A beaver is just a backward platypus that had evolved some giant ass teeth. Sorry, giant _ass_ teeth." The ass backward correction from the usual norm got me howling.
I might have been "a little" fadded when I watched this, but when I saw the platypus swimming in water I honestly thought "Wow, platypus butt has beaver eyes as a decoy. That is soooo cool!" Unfortuntely, the comments clued me in. I think I would have prefred to live on thinking that platypuses have beaver butts
I live in Australia, and I've seen many platypuses. So when I watched your footage, I was thinking, "Man, there's something seriously deformed about this platypus." And then I reached the end of the video and received my answers. VERY CLEVER! Thank you.
It is frankly embarrassing how long I tried to convince myself that yes, platypus bills *must* be that long in order to reach the bottom of the lake...
I knew that it wasn't a platypus bill, but platypuses have beaver-like tails, so although I knew that the animal was walking backwards (or being filmed backwards), I didn't realize that it wasn't a platypus.
Omfg the entire time I was thinking "they kinda look like a beaver walking backwards" but I didn't notice the feet until I replayed it. I fucking love this channel.
Damn. Had me in the first half...and the second! I was trying to figure out how the "front" paws were so inverted, like it had folded its flippers back and was walking on the backs of its wrists. I need a nap.
The was something very unnerving about how long the beak was, how I couldn't see its eyes, how it moved, and how the water slid up the fur. I was relieved at the end that it was just reversed footage.
I'm ashamed to say that I only noticed the trick when the critter was lowering itself into the water, and droplets were rolling up its back. Prior to that I was like, "That flappy part is skimming along the grass in a weird way," and "Do they have backwards knees? I wouldn't put it past a platypus."
I thought he had just reversed it like he did the Hippos, they have the same tails as beavers anyway. It caught me off guard even though I knew it was reversed already
I'm a professional naturalist in Maryland, and I kid you not that a nature center where I worked once got a no kidding serious call from a Member of The Public alerting us that there was a dead platypus behind a local liquor store. Thanks for zefrank for clearing up our confusion at last.
I honestly think if you polled most Americans, they'd tell you a platypus is about the size of a beaver. I was ASTONISHED when I finally saw one up close.
The biggest irony of this is a backwards walking beaver looks more like an echidna than a real platypus does.....I blame those huge digging claws for looking like backwards feet.
@@englishatheart Irony can be a couple of things. One of them is meaning the opposite of what you are saying; another one is (quoting Oxford) "a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result." I think it's pretty counterintuitive and funny that it would be easier for a placental mammal turned the wrong way around to look like an echidna than another monotreme.
Congratulations, you totally Got me. I was thinking, “that’s some weird ass looking sub-species of platypus…I thought there was only one species??” That was well done.
Congrats on noticing a camera trick, I'd buy you a cookie but I doubt you'd show up for your feeding. Best content? Really??? is everything you consume always better than last time or do you have a mind to develop a favorite? Can you explain how your sanity is something that can be sloughed away as a result of you having a good time? Being creative with language doesn't mean you have to be hard at work destroying it.
@@ceoofsex7210 Disliking a comment does nothing my guy. It's not even saved on youtube's servers like a video's dislike ratio, it's saved on your browser. The only thing clicking the thumbs down does is turn in white.
Dear zefrank, Every time you release a video, my wife and I have to watch it together that night. This is what you do when you have two children. Tonight’s entry did indeed blow her mind. This was followed by a search of RU-vid and watching videos of backwards animals, and listening to her laugh uncontrollably. I don’t know whether to thank you, or take her to a psychiatrist. Either way it has brought a great deal of joy to our household. And possibly evidence of mental illness. Regards, EricC
I really needed you to tell me that was a beaver and am glad you did at the end because I was legit losing my mind like, " I always thought the bill of a duck-billrd platypus was shorter! A bill that long seems like a hindrance to survival, like it must get in the way a lot!" I forgot it was possible to reverse video footage to make it look like it was walking forward
I was amazed to see that a Platypus looks just like a beaver, until I found that it WAS indeed a beaver! I kind of thought it was weird that a platypus' fur was going the wrong way.
I started watching and immediately thought, "that platypus looks really weird" then "that's not a platypus" Then when he talked about travelling for days and being eaten by the tassie devil, it settled that it was fake
Thanks, laying in hospital alone and burst out laughing at the beaver bit. Even worse as an Australian i didn't pick up immediately that it wasn't a platypus, something was telling me that it wasn't right! I am going to get a psych evaluation as well as all the other tests lol.
I'm not even embarrassed I noticed something weird about it's backwards feet, and how it looked strange when it walked into the water, and everything else wrong, but just brushed it off, cuz there's no way frank1 is tricking me... I laughed so hard my dog started growling at me. Thanks, that felt really good.
I honestly clicked on this expecting a video about how when the Royal Society brought back the first platypus taxidermies, people thought it was a conspiracy and a hoax.
My video editor sense triggered that it was backwards, but you got me a long time thinking "where the hell is its eyes?", i thought it was a backwards video about a platypuss with bangs, and then i noticed it touches the ground kinda like it was feeling it, then i saw the legs, but the beaver reveal still astounished me. Great video, hail Jerry!
I was about to comment “I didn’t know Platypuses had backwards feet. That’s amazing.” Until I saw the unusual water physics as the “platypus” went back into the water and then I saw the beaver lol.
I was just thinking about platypuses yesterday. My family drove past a statue of P. T. Barnum, and the one thing I could remember about his museum was that it showcased the platypus, a creature almost unknown to the American public at the time. _It’s like zefrank can read my mind._
Oddly enough, I was just thinking of P.T. Barnum yesterday. No joke. I actually googled him to see what P.T. Stood for. Weird. It’s Phineas Taylor by the way.
I will always think of Robin Williams’ bit about god having a sense of humor and smoking pot when he made the platypus. “Ok, it’s a mammal but it lays eggs...” 😆
@@MrEDMeaner I thought I was so clever, thinking 'he's showing us reversed video of a PLATYPUS so that it looks like the tail is the bill'. Never even occurred to me to question the species.
Walk one way, it's Canada. Walk the other way, it's Australia. I think that critter has stumbled onto something much bigger than being either a platypus or a beaver.
@@daveaster1961 Good question. If you type 'stumbled onto' into Google, it comes up with suggestions. If you type 'stumbled on to' into Google, it removes the space and shows options for 'stumbled onto'. Figured as much. Cheers!
