Getting a little tired of RU-vidrs reviewing the Pocket line like they're supposed to be an a7S III
@PaulinhOliveiraRP
@PaulinhOliveiraRP 2 года назад
Man, you said all. Totally agreed. I've looking to buy this camera as first camera (not my first cam to handle, I have a job in a film company and we use to operate Sony and Canon cameras) and everyone that is saying tha BMPCC6PRO is not ergonomic, battery sucks is just trying to compare to A7SII or A7III. This fellas looks that can't see that for the price of an A7III you have 6K BRAW 50fps, ND filter Built In, full size HDMI, 2 mini XLR connector, one of the best color science for the price and false color inside camera too. I guess those guys that talk about "ergonomics, battery wont last" it's suffering for the past of the launch of pocket 4k. Ok was a disaster, but look to this beast that we have now, so much features for a small price in compare with cams withe same level of budget
@filmdad24

But you gotta know that this guy has EXTENSIVELY tested the A7s3 and… trust me he does not call that a cine camera!! Watch his videos. I ended up choosing the ZCam because that is a solid bang for true Arri competition.

Caleb never even mentioned the a7s III in this video. He compared the 6K Pro to other cinema cameras like Panasonic, RED, Canon and Blackmagic’s other cameras, focusing primarily on ergos and build quality. The review was not even necessarily negative. It would seem to be only in your mind where the a7s III lives rent-free.

I totally understand that the ergonomics are awful if you are trying to use it out of the box. That being said, if you rig it up and use it as a cinema camera, it is literally unbeatable for the price. I think even with the body style they chose, this camera really isn't meant to be used as a mirrorless or dslr style camera ergonomically. I really wish they just did a modular cube design like the Red Komodo, but I can get over that very easily due to price and image quality. I personally would 100% recommend this camera for people who plan on rigging it out. If you plan on using it out of the box, Id consider buying something else.

the biggest issue in modding this camera is that Blackmagic uses one giant pcb reaching inside the grip all the way out to the ports and top to bottom. Even if you rebody it and rotate everything around, at best you are left with the ursa mini forfactor.

Sorry, but the handling "issue" you're going on about is so disingenuous that I felt compelled to comment. You put that Sigma 18-35mm on any of those cameras you got sitting on your desk and you got the same problem, although I don't even see the problem in resting your palm on the base of the lens instead of the side of the camera. I use this camera almost daily with that lens and I honestly don't see how it is awful. And taking a point away because the LCD tint issue was addressed in a firmware update and not perfect out of the box? Come on :) If I nitpicked to this degree every camera out there is awful.

Mentions of the plastic body when it’s actually more solid than the last ones. Idk. Anyway…love the camera.
@RiderInRed

Exactly this, you can't even use this camera on its own for the most part without any additional rigging. Sure you could use it as is as a DSLR camera cinematographer but cmon, this is a cinema camera. The red he showed had an additional handle and whatnot attached to it. Same could be in this case. You could get small rig or tilt a handles. Hell I don't even imagine using this camera handheld like he did with his hand under the lens. Are you kidding me? You're getting this camera to have your hand on the lens when adjusting focus? What happened to follow focuses or wireless focuses? There is no way this camera is getting rocked on its own like this unless it's going to be used by some amateur wedding photographers. This is not a run and gun camera and it never was advertised as. Sure it's called the pocket but it also says "CINEMA", which involves then modularity. You have to rig it.

My team got this camera right when it came out. For the first few months without a rig, using it was almost impossible, it's ergonomics are really annoying. Once cages were finally being produced, getting it rigged up with a specific combo of handles really worked for me, and now it's a dream to shoot with. I don't have to touch the nasty plastic, and the cage's ergonomics are way better and help with the weight distribution. Since it was always our plan to rig it up, this worked great for us, though I have to agree I really with the camera was better without a cage. If you are planning or willing to cage this beast of a camera, I really don't think it can be beat for the price range it's incredible to work with RAW footage that's so high quality at this price point.

Lots of great insight. Your comments about the lens protruding so far out got me thinking about the cameras I've used in the past. Busted out my old Canon F-1n and the Tokina 80-200mm lens to approximate the holding position. For me, it's like the old days of shooting with the left hand supporting the lens and the left elbow pushing against the torso. Not bad, but for long shots that need stability: difficult. Though I suspect that the best way to really optimize this camera is to rig it up with 15mm rails and all the accessories - including V-mount battery.

Love the video. As I also have a BMPCC 6K Pro with that 18-35, I've got some suggestions to help you out Caleb. 1st, pull your left hand back when trying to hold the camera. I agree it feels weird if it's really far out, but that bump out where the lens is mounted is enough to have the side of your palm rest there while your index, middle, and ring finger are on the lens. For battery life, so far I've found that the battery grip is the most compact solution for triple the run time, coming to about 3 hours for me on average. It also changes the ergonomics to be more like a 1DX with grip. V-mount batteries are great for long run times, but travelling with V-mount chargers is never fun. As for tipping over, I've found the easiest thing is just use a long Manfrotto style quick release plate, something like 4+ inches long with most of it pushed forward and under the lens. That will keep it from tipping forward.

God I want this camera so bad. Every time I hear someone break down the positives and ask if the negatives are worth it I don't even think twice when I say yes. If you are an aspiring filmmaker, you want the most features and control as possible on a budget. Rigs on cinema cameras are almost always a cumbersome mess of cables, antennae, operating equipment, and monitors anyway, and the majority of moving shots are still going to be on some sort of steadicam or or dolly system because the hand-held look doesn't apply. The value of this camera so outweighs the cost it's insane.

Kinda seems like you have a love/hate relationship with cinema cameras in general. I think like the sigma fp, this is a case of who is this camera for? If you’re a videographer or youtuber and you need a quick turnaround time, this may not be the best option. But if you’re an independent filmmaker and you’re looking for something that handles raw well and you’re working with a small crew, this is a viable option.

Its a great run and gun camera. No need to rig anything or even bring a monitor with an 1500 knit 5" monitor built in. You do have to use stabilized lenses for most handheld situations. Its great for super run and gun A cam situations and as B cam on a tripod. Not the easier to mount on a gimbal but internal ND's make up for it. The battery grip takes care of the battery situation.

I can feel your pain, Caleb. The old paradox: usability vs. the last bit of picture quality. I guess if you are a hobbyist with all the time in the world, on set and in post, this is worth it. Personally, I have to make a living from my corporate films, and will therefore stay in the Panasonic universe. In my world, getting 5 more setups on a 10 hr day trumps ultimate picture quality. That being said, I am intrigued by internal NDs, and have to admit changing screw in NDs or handling a matte box both cost me time on set. Do you see a way of rigging this in a manner that solves the issues you mentioned? Handheld and on gimbal? I would love to hear your ideas. From what I saw, this looks quite front heavy? Any way to set this off in a simple small rig? Thank you for your well made and balanced ( no pun) review!

putting this on a rail type rig to provide forward grip below the lens to hold it further up front and shift the wright is the way to go. the dslr shape boggles my mind but i guess it's to draw the transitionary crowd as a stepping stone between a dslr and a bigger cine camera

Today I used the Pocket 6K Pro for the first time. I’ve shot with Ursa Mini Pro’s, with the BMPCC4K, but this was the first Blackmagic camera to absolutely blow me away in terms of image quality. BRAW with the 6K Pro’s dynamic range is just unbelievable. But my god do I wish that they would just ditch the pseudo-DSLR form factor and turn it into a cube camera.

I guess they could have added some mounting points and a detachable hand rest. With a 3D printer you can definitely make one yourself and use the bottom mounting 1/4 threads and even incorporate a plate into the design to give it more resting surface forwards of its weight to put it on a table like you want it.

I don't disagree entirely but IMO I don't think it's THAT bad to shoot with. I've filmed 3-4 weddings with the 6K pro and plenty of other gigs. A few cage-less, with a neck strap, and a few completely rigged out. I find myself resting my palm on the rails positioned under the lens to pull focus and my right hand on the grip. I will be using the half-cage in the future though because I have smaller hands and holding onto the grip WITH the cage is pretty difficult. Let's all hope for a CUBE shaped BM camera in the near future. LOL

Well of course, and the updates to make the camera better have been a major plus side, just add in the extra battery pack and you have 3 batteries 1 interior and 2exterior in at once and can change batteries without having to stop recording (because of the interior battery), then just through on a cage or gimbal (with counter weight if needed) and you’re all set

I have a question for you, I was watching the new Bo Burnham Netflix comedy special “Inside” that he filmed alone in his house on the Panasonic S1H with lots of artistic projector lighting effects, I noticed he was using some aputure MC”s. It's now a couple of years later, and it's still hard to beat. Any thoughts on how the Pyxis line? It seems like a love it or hate it situation. A box is great for people who always build a rig, but they left out a few things like HDMI, so people who use things like a Ninja V will need to get a new display or add an adapter to their rig.

honestly, We use the 6k as our studio camera and for talking head stuff, and use a C200 for run-and-gun with the dual pixel af. We'll probably get a 6k pro for a two-angle talking head setup. Fixed focus and it's on sticks so for that you really can't beat the quality, especially writing directly to an ssd. really comes down to being the right tool for the right job!

I assume they are doing these odd things with the "Pocket" line to protect the Ursa line, which has a more conventional pro form factor. BM just needs to make some changes to the Ursa line to differentiate it, and then repackage the guts of the 6k Pro into a form that is less goofy.
@paul.grohmann
@paul.grohmann 2 года назад
Yeah true. Also for the 6k Pro I could imagine that it has something to do with the price. Maybe they didn't want to completely redesign the body since that would've been more development cost. But idk maybe I just want to sugercoat it

Honestly at this point they should go for it even if it kills the Ursa line. At ''only'' $3K/$4K imagine how much money they'd make with a great cam with autofocus and great form factor + the 6K pro specs. Every filmaker would sell their canon / Sony / Panasonic cam or DSLR for it.

This camera is 100% comfortable for me to hold in my hands. I film a lot on the Arri and Red also and really love the 6k Pro. The 6k Pro to me is like owning an Arri that is so good for run and gun that i don't even hav to rig (in a cage) to go shoot with. Those complaining about this camera have never shot on an Arri or Red. I had to rigg my first 6k as its required for monitor and battery. I bought a cage for this 6k Pro but only for when am going full hand held/tripod on a medium/large budget shoot and need to impress the client, aside from that, i really like the way it handles. In my opinion this isn't the best camera for under $2500 but its one of the BEST CINEMA camera for under $7,000 concidering the features that you get in this camera compare to any other camera under $7,000. If this camera was the same price as the canon C70 ($5,500), i'd still pick the 6k Pro. Then again, i shoot movies and music videos.

I'm a 6K Pro owner. It's either on a tripod, monopod or Easyrig Minimax so the form factor is not an issue. I also added an NP-F battery plate so when paired with a 970 series I get a few hours. All problems solved.

Can u leave the battery inside at the same time? I've heard it can fry the HDMI port. But that's what I'm doing with the 4k too and never had issues using the 12v npf plate output while leaving the Canon lp6 inside.
@evanthecameraman
@evanthecameraman 2 года назад
@@Nils_Samp Yes, I do which allows me to hot swap NP-F batteries. The HDMI port frying happens when you have a monitor plugged in the HDMI, then plug power into the monitor or camera after and in rare circumstances the positive line connects before the negative/ground touches. In that situation the electricity flows through the HDMI port and fries it. So not only is it unlikely to happen but it won’t happen if you leave all the cables plugged in before adding your external batteries.

Honestly, I watch a lot of your videos. especially the old camera reviews, however, I must admit, this video kinda ticked me off a bit. It's like, no matter what camera manufacturers do, people will find something to complain about. No camera i perfect. NONE! This camera was designed for full production. Movies and high end commercials...not run and gun shooters. I mean, with everything BMD put into this camera, you still found something to complain about. I used this camera to shoot a commercial last Friday, and it was joy to work with compared to my other big massive cameras. DPs I know that are shooting FX shows and BET shows love this camera and can't praise it enough. Anyways, I guess to each it's own.
@Chromedbustop
@Chromedbustop 2 года назад
In fairness, if someone made a video and didn't put any negative critiques in it then people would be like "Oh you're probably getting paid by the camera company!!! Sellout!" So even if someone loves using a camera if they make a video review about it they kind of do have to find something negative to say just to seem balanced. Thats why so many people have to take time putting disclaimers in their videos ("This video is/isn't sponsored." "It's my opinion." So on and so forth). So while it may be true that no matter what camera manufacturers do, people will find something to complain about, the same thing could be said about video reviews. No matter what kind of review someone gives, viewers will find something to complain about. And I'm not saying this to get into a fight with you. Just that I kind of understand that it can be tricky to do these kinds of videos, especially if you say something negative about the product. But he just gave his opinion. I don't think he meant for it to be taken as the end-all-be-all review of this camera.
@guguemichaels
@guguemichaels 2 года назад
@@Chromedbustop I understand what you are saying, however, as user of that product, those complaints are non-void because I just shot an entire movie with that camera and do not agree with some part of his review. As I said, the camera is not a run and gun camera but yet, people use it as such them complain when they don't get the same result as run and gun DSLR cameras. That's what ticks me off. It is a production camera. Even Blackmagic as a company said it in all their videos. It is for movies, commercials and controlled environment. Not run and gun or vlogging. It ticks me off whenever people complain about things made for controlled environment with this camera. So it's not the review, is what he complained about.

Many of the issues that you adress are indeed issues. Though I personally don't find the form factor as annoying as you seem to. I have one myself and I totally agree that it's a kinda weird body and something like the C70 would've been nicer, I personally don't have a problem with pulling focus with my left hand on the lens. My palm fits on the bottom of the body, where the fan is, and then it works for me. Still really stoked to see what solutions you have in mind, maybe I'll be copying some of these :D. Great video.
