So glad to watch 2 greats drummers studying a pattern from my land CUBA Francisco Mela is a master! For those that love this pattern i can give some tips! the 'CASCARA' (right hand) can be used on HIHAT RIM and RIDE as well ..just depends from the moment / intention of the song! the "CLAVE" has 5 notes and can be played on different places 1 SIDE STICK - 2 TOM - 3 SIDE STICK or TOM FLOOR - 4 (she's not playing but Thomas does) OPEN HIHAT - 5 SNARE practice KICK and LEFT HAND first only ,feel it! and them use the 'CASCARA' or 'COWBELL' pattern or simply QUARTER/ EIGHT NOTES on Right hand sorry by my english ;) try it and enjoy it !
It means so much to see this part of the shedding process. Wish more professionals posted early stages of learning new things to encourage all levels. And amazing to hear concepts shared by the incredible Thomas Pridgen! @drumeo should promote these sessions!
Don't be afraid of it. Latin style, funk rhythm is your culture. It all comes from Africa. Keep doing amazing things. Love and Light beautiful being. ❤️🙏🏾
I love seeing the process of you learning this. A lot of people don’t enjoy the mistakes like they should and have FUN learning something as demanding as this groove. Thanks for being an example of joy in learning!!! 🤘 🤘
Sistah Gordon, Brotha Pridgen, via his Berkeley mentor/teacher and now through you, has genuinely shifted the paradigm as to what it means when we talk about FUNK!!! I mean, whoa nelly, Funk is a MUCH larger category than most musicians and music enthusiasts, alike, have probably ever considered. THE THREE OF YOU NEED TO DO A “TRIPLE THREAT” DRUMMING MASTER CLASS. Seriously!
You’re missing a note on the left hand pattern from what Thomas demonstrated, unless you’re intentionally making your own thing with the left hand pattern. 😁
It's so awesome that you are exploring these grooves. The risk and reward you express as you're playing them mirrors exactly how it feels for me when I encounter an unfamiliar one. This is by no means an easy style to play, especially once you learn that the audience can take it just as fast as you can deal it.
I didn’t know you made youtube videos, especially educational ones! Loved this lesson, and Thomas is a legend. Ill be tuning in, thanks for the knowledge 🙏🏻
Great how the vibe changes because of the difference in sounds of your kits. This is great . i am a sax/flute player. But the drums are the basis of the song in Latin and funk. The basis on which the song comes from.
That was cool, and it's weird I just started to get curious about Latin music because the other night I was listening to a band through the window of a restaurant, they did have a couple other drums besides the kit, so the guy on the kit was keeping it simple as the other percussion took little parts of the beat, it was awesome!

Small suggestion, can you consider presenting your guest by featuring more info about them especially for your followers who may not know anything about them.
PQ, you want to hear that style in an old school song? Check out the style Funkadelic did the song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GZECQCQjP38.html A bit slower, but darn sure funky. Go ahead and create a track using that groove beat, you got it. Oh, and I liked the tom hit you did while playing this, that made it Afro Funk. Funk is my FAVORITE genre, I put that sh.... into everything I create, even classical lol.
Think Sade's Sweetest Taboo.. And it most certainly is your culture... We are so far removed from what our culture encompasses many modern percussionist don't realize where funk and jazz come from.. Afro-Cuban Afro-Latin as well, just leave off the Cuban and Latin part. It's African Music. The complex independence needed to create the cross rhythms aka polyrhythms requires practice and patience. I myself have stopped playing other's music unless given the freedom to recreate it. Electronic Percussion technology is taking it to another level.. '22 time to shake things up with some thousand year old African Polyrhythms.. :)

The lag on youtube is unbearable at this point. The video is almost a full two seconds ahead of the sound. It's like watching Kung Fu theater in the 80s.
8:53 Mark. I ain't a drummer. You actually was accenting. I suggest you hit and feel the vibrations from the hard part behind your ears to catch it. Uuuugh, thumbs 👍???
