This video material was recorded, from September 1998 - September 1999, thanks to a Fulbright Fellowship and support from Jagellonian University in Poland. The geographical region here is known as the Podhale, and the subject is the gorale (mountain people, or highlanders) of southern Poland.
This film documents the world where my grandmother, Caroline Hajnos, came from as a Polish immigrant -- a place and culture I knew absolutely nothing about.
After recording this material on Hi-8 videotape (over 100 hours), I could find no support or interest in it when I returned to the U.S. So I eventually gave up. Over the years, with the recent digital age, and opportunities on the internet, I was able to finish it and perhaps I can find an audience for this material.
I've been trying to upload a better quality video to you tube, but it literally takes days and the upload, for some unknown reason, fails.
The original videotape has deteriorated and subsequent edits in other videotape formats engender weakened visual quality with each tape generation. Then, uploading this to youtube, more visual quality has been lost. With no resources to improve the film, this is the best I can do for now.
The group of singing young women who are a foundation of much of this film are named "Podhalanie," from the village of Ludzmierz. They were preparing for a singing competition in Bukowina Tatranska called "Sabałowe fairy tales."

Ten film dokumentuje świat, z którego moja babcia Caroline Hajnos pochodziła jako polska imigrantka - miejsce i kulturę, o której nie miałam pojęcia.
Po nagraniu tego materiału na taśmę wideo Hi-8 (ponad 100 godzin), po powrocie do USA nie znalazłem w nim żadnego wsparcia ani zainteresowania. W końcu się poddałem. Z biegiem lat, z niedawną erą cyfrową i możliwościami w Internecie, udało mi się go ukończyć i być może uda mi się znaleźć odbiorców dla tego materiału.
Próbowałem przesłać film lepszej jakości na You Tube, ale trwa to dosłownie kilka dni, a przesyłanie z nieznanego powodu kończy się niepowodzeniem.
Oryginalna taśma wideo uległa pogorszeniu, a kolejne edycje w innych formatach taśm wideo powodują osłabienie jakości wizualnej z każdą generacją taśmy. Następnie, przesyłając to na youtube, utracono więcej jakości wizualnej. Nie mając środków na ulepszenie filmu, to najlepsze, co mogę teraz zrobić.
Grupa śpiewających młodych kobiet, która jest podstawą większości tego filmu, nazywa się „Podhalanie” ze wsi Ludźmierz. Przygotowywały się do konkursu śpiewu w Bukowinie Tatrzańskiej pt. „Bajki sabałowe”.
