Today we have a look at the EFA-2k Makarov holster that was "made for Spetznaz". I am extremely skeptical that any Spetznaz operator ever actually deployed with one of these things, though. It's a holster with a neat mechanical function; you can push the pistol down through the bottom of the holster and it will automatically disengage the safety and rack the slide (chambering a round) in the process (ejecting the chambered round out the hole in the holster is there is one chambered).
This sounds like a a good idea, but it's really not. It is an ND just waiting to happen, it's not a good concealment holster size-wise, and it only has one true purpose. That is to be a workaround for people/places where it is mandated to carry the pistol chamber empty, and with the safety engaged. In reality, the Makarov's double action trigger is a completely safe and effective safety mechanism for carry, and there is no actual reason to carry one with an empty chamber.

Worth noting that this is a holster that (nominally) would be used in Russia, where it is very cold. If you are wearing gloves, the holster will snatch at the material and also probably not release the gun, so that's a problem. And if there is snow/moisture around then the grip will probably be slippery, so there's a non-zero possibility that it'll jump out of your hand as you push it down through the holster. Oh and also... Having a special holster just for special forces which advertises "I'm a special forces dude" is not a great idea.

As Ian mentioned situation for such holster is - you need carry gun without round in the chamber and with engaged safety. As someone who has ben through the military: I can definitely say that a "Safety always on. No bullet in chamber" policy is very sensible. Humans make mistakes, people who are in the military make more mistakes because they are under stress and often sleep deprived. In special forces people make even more mistakes, at least during training and longer repetition drills, because when the grunt is being fucked and tired - special forces are done roughly one third. Additionally the racking of a weapon pointed at you is a powerful psychological force. Obviously this won't help if you are in an active combat zone. However, on guard duty this may very well discourage someone from doing something stupid.

I seem to recall Bianchi had something like this in the 1960s for M-1911s. That brings up the only gun accident I personally know about in over 50 years of shooting . This guy was shooting an M-1911 in a bowling pin match. Apparently he had a habit of clearing his gun bass-ackwards- first eject the chambered round, then remove the magazine. He must have thought he could pull back enough to eject the round, but not enough to clear the one in the mag. The range officer said he'd been warn about that before. Then he decided to shift the gun in the holster with his thumb on the grip safety and finger on the trigger. Talk about volunteering to be a victim! Fortunately the round "only " cut through his leg without hitting bone. Truely makes stupid look smart.

Russian police, including SOBR and OMON typically do in fact carry their pistols with the chamber empty. From what I understand, those old school leather flap holsters are still the standard issue holster, even for specialized units like the two I mentioned. Many operators purchase after market holsters that are more practical, kydex holsters are becoming increasingly popular, I'm sure before kydex holsters hit the market these EFA holsters were used by some guys in place of the super untactical leather flap holster.

I gotta say I can see the risks but I also think this thing is kinda cool. An interesting niche application could be the police in my opinion, in case someone were to grab an officers gun out of the holster and they are not very informed about guns, then they could pull the trigger all day long and nothing would happen. I know that there are holsters that have a hidden button or whatnot to secure the gun from unwanted access but unless the police officer has serious training on how to draw quickly without a major delay (caused by this safety feature) in stressful situations, I think this holster would be faster.

The makarov double action trigger in my experience is plenty long and heavy to resist ND. I just carry mine in a plain form fit leather holster, round in the chamber, safety off, hammer lowered. Pretty sure this comes from the myth that the Makarov isn't drop safe/not safe to carry with a round in the chamber because it has a free floating firing pin completely ignoring the notorious primer hardness of Russian ammo.
@minilathemayhem
@minilathemayhem 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, similar happens with the AR-15. The free floating firing pin can dimple the primer, and because it dimples the primer, people get concerned and think that means it's striking hard enough to set off the primer (even though it hasn't set off a primer yet). The only time it's really a problem is if you've got a lot of debris preventing the firing pin from moving and its stuck in a position where the firing pin is past the breech face, which I feel like would only happen if you've absolutely never cleaned the gun, and honestly, that would be a problem even with a spring on the firing pin.

I used to concealed carry a Makarov, and one of the hardest things about moving to a different carry gun was losing that little extra peace of mind that came from the double action trigger and rock-solid thumb safety the Makarov has. For a gun that’s that safe, this holster is absolutely pointless.

The gun is rock solid reliable i've put over 3K rounds through it at the range without a single malfunction - oh and i've never cleaned it. Only wish it had double-stack mags and that I could put a light on it. Luckily i've never had to actual defend myself with it, and hope I never have to - but I know it will work when called upon. I've thought about getting a CZ83 but the Makarovs are already heavy enough with the all steel frame.

PM Makarov's pistol is not a special forces weapon, it is a pistol for the personal defense of an officer ( a personal weapon, as they say, in order to shoot oneself without being captured - such a joke ) and a pistol of the law enforcement system of the police and the prosecutor's office and the KGB, that is, a personal weapon! there was a pb (6p9) pistol for special forces, as well as a Stechkin aps pistol for tankers and pilots, because the automak, even in a shortened version, is large in size

I was using the Makarov in Estonia in about 1998 it was winter and the thing I remember was the safety catch just falling off the pistol into the snow. Don't quite remember how it happened. I had a good friend in the Kaitseliit then. The police had a little showing of weapons that had been seized. And used in crimes. One I saw was a little pistol I was told was a baby Makarov a small flat pistol a bit like like a .22 size pistol they said that it fired special ammunition an unusual calbre and design high velocity. I was told it was a Spetnatz weapon designed by women that could be fired under water and the rounds would go through steel plate and that it had been used by the Russian mafia in Estonia. The person it killed lost over a kilo or two of flesh from the victim they told me. Confiscated guns could be given over to the military to be reused. I got to fire a Colt .45 that had been a Mafia pistol. And a baby Walther and Browning.

Level 3 retention! Pfft my holster not only doesn't retain shit it racks a round and disengages the safety! NYPD : I'll take 40,000

Retention also looks horrible. All someone would have to do is come up behind you, grab the gun, push down, and now they have your pistol, ready to fire.

A limp is the last thing to worry about, wait until you see their gun-knife's.

I have seen holsters like this for glocks, I think that’s a better idea considering glocks have no external safety you may want one to be un chambered but even then you’d need to be careful how you use it because bad trigger discipline is still a good way to make a 9mm hole in your leg.

I remember seeing this on Deadliest Warrior back in the day and basing my entire plan for carrying around this holster and the Makarov. Having since gone through the military, owned many guns, done drills, the whole nine yards, I understand that this holster is essentially the exact same as the US' tacticool mall ninja garbage. But dammit, I still think the idea is pretty neat! Would I carry with it? Probably not. Would I own one for the cool factor? Eh, maybe? Biggest reason I want a legit Soviet Makarov is that they're so hard to find. Other than that, meh. There are better guns for EDC, whose ammo is cheaper and easier to find.
