The Pokémon Fighting Game That Should Have Popped Off - Pokken 

A long time ago. I loved it.

Yes! I recently got into it and I love it more and more as I get better at it.

I've been playing this game since late 2016 and have been a Braixen main for a while, then switched to Suicune. Pokken Tournament DX was the first game I bought when the Nintendo Switch launched since I'm big into fighting games. I wish there was more single player content and a deeper story that was put into it, felt bland to me. These days, I barely play it anymore mostly due to the online being dead and no dlc.

I played at a friend house and it was so FUN

Tried it on the free trial and had a blast, bought it after and been loving playing as Blastoise

Any recommendations? I'm new to pokken and I'm looking for content creators to watch so I improve

They made it seem like it was just an upgraded wii like how the xbox one s is to the xb1 or how the ps4 pro is to the ps4

Not that weird, For some reason most of Pokemon spinoffs are underrated. Even Mystery Dungeon, which is probably the most known Pokemon spinoff, had a really hard time on the 3DS.

Plus actually advertise it (it's just recently I'm finding out about it wtf Nintendo?), and do the basic things every other fighting game franchise does like allowing other controllers in tournaments and releasing it for more than just Nintendo consoles (no one is buying a Wii U or Switch to play fighting games on). Like everything else Nintendo does, they are their own worst enemy and actively hamstrung this series... such a shame.

@@naejimba Ik plenty of people who bought a Switch solely for Smash, so I disagree on that point. Nintendo has so many Pokemon IP that to me it's somewhat understandable that there's not always the most effective marketing, I mean, if you're not an avid Pokemon fan, it feels like they've over-saturated the market with the amount of content they put out cuz I can't even keep up with it

@@robocu4 , well Smash is a platform fighter and is a different core audience than most other fighting games. The core audience for the latter are on PC and Playstation... meaning they are unlikely to buy the system simply to try a single game. There is no evidence to suggest that making the game a console exclusive led to increased sales of consoles, and it is common sense that limiting it to the Switch lowered the sales they would have gotten. This is similar to Killer Instinct; it did nothing to push XBox One sales (the whole point of making console exclusives) while at the same time it hurt the sales of the game. Also, even assuming they believed that making it a console exclusive would push sales of the console, then wouldn't it make sense to advertise the game? How are people supposed to be aware of it otherwise? In fact, why bother to make any product if you are not willing to maximize its sales (and profits) by advertising? The fact is, they had the people from tekken (a respected company that consumers would trust to make a quality fighting game) using the highest grossing franchise in history.. it is a winning combination. I'm sorry, but I can't see this as anything but poor business decisions on the part of Nintendo.

@@naejimba you're not wrong, feels like Nintendo will get in their own way when producing fighting games. They keep making Smash games, that get progressively more balanced, yet they don't want anyone to take the game seriously. Imo the Switch could be Nintendo's last major console generation, I get the feeling they'll go multiplatform eventually. It was unthinkable that they'd be dropping mario shit on the app store, but maybe they'll chase the bag. It could be a lot more profitable to release on diff consoles. They'll probably keep making new consoles cuz they're really intent on protecting their first party titles, but if the Switch is any indication, their hardware quality assurance is not what it used to be. I'll never buy a Nintendo product w/o having the many joycons I wasted money on in mind lol

I do hope a sequel does come out. There are so many ways this game can expand and develop, and there are so many amazing Pokemon that could become fighters with incredibly unique fighting styles. Toxitricity, Bewear, Ledian, and Diancie are a few that come to mind.

I was seriously expecting either Pokken 2 or more DLC after that free play weekend last month. Alas, nothing.

Yeah I went to look for this game at Walmart and saw the sticker under it said 40 bucks.. so I was ready to get it. Until I saw that it was wrongly labeled. And it was still at full price.

@@KKHell Uh... Not sure where that came from... Also your wrong about Tekken. The last Evo we had before Covid hit, Tekken 7 twitch viewership peaked over 248,000 viewers. Its engaging, challenging, feels polished, mechanically well designed, and most importantly fun from my experience with the game.

@@KKHell I wouldn't call 248k peak viewership "struggling to remain relevant". It was the second highest viewership that Evo, even above SFV and fairly close to the highest. Akuma was the only crossover character until Negan got added as dlc later which brought the crossover character count to 2... Also you should be respectful when expressing your dislike of Tekken. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean its bad. Its like if you don't like a chef's dish because it was built around spinach which you happen to not like. Do you be disrespectful to the chef and call their food "sh*t"? Video game developers work hard to produce games wanting others to enjoy it. I took a couple semesters of Simulation game development, its a long and tedious process of artistic expression and iteration. Speaking of which have you even played Tekken 7 or even spectated it? Edit: total crossover count is 4. forgot about noctis and Geese howard which were also added later and I wouldnt say effected the game's popularity by that much.

I mean, Pokken has actually gotten a LOT of dlc over it's lifetime (remember, this game came out in like, 2012 or 2013?). They've done a great job despite how little people actually play Pokken.

@@Bluebatstar , I just found out about this game recently and I'm having a blast! It is a crime this wasn't advertised well. Imagine if Nintendo also wasn't Nintendo and they released it onto other platforms that people who play fighting games are actually on, and allowed other controllers in tournaments like every other fighting game. This franchise is a gem and it's like Nintendo is purposely hampering it.

You'll never hear it because its not really a positive thing to have a perfectly balanced fighting game. On top of the fact that such a perfectly balanced game can usually be an indication of either a homogenous roster, lack of options etc.

That's awesome! He was a massive part of optimizing gengar combos for synergy. It was great fun working with him and helping him understand how the synergy bar worked. I think I went by Dount in the community at the time on discord. Been a while since I've been in touch.

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment, speaking as somebody in the Pokken community. There's obviously some Smash and Pokken overlap due to the platform being shared, but in my expirence as a Pokken player, there's more crossover with the traditional FGC community then there is with Smash in terms of what other games our top players play.

@@MajoraZ I'm not talking about the game mechanics. I'm talking about the overlap of players, and the presence of Pokkén in the FGC. I was the first to be disappointed by the situation, because Pokkén is a very solid game that needs more attention. But thinking that they're an integral part of the FGC is just false. They made their own scene out of the FGC, just like other fighting games like Gundam Versus, Naruto Storm, For Honor, and Smash.

@@MajoraZ I'm also in the Pokken community and I'd say there's a relatively even split as to who feeds into Pokken. That being said though, it would be an error to say that smash tie in is probably what people associate Pokken with because of the platform it's on

Exactly. I know this video was about the competitive scene, but this game in general is lacking in content and this hurts it a lot. Unfortunately with Play Pokemon dropping it this year and TPC focusing only on mobile cashgrabs I don't see an improved sequel on the horizon.

Yo, I just noticed that when I first saw Pokken for the first time and it's gameplay. I mean I am slow as well but that was obvious to me, and I am not even a fan of fighting games! "Hey, this look like Tekken!" *Check the box and it said its been made by Namco* "Oh, that's why."

You also must’ve forgot that bandai namco developed tekken which is one of the top grossing fighting game franchises in history. Its a that is meant to introduce newcomers and fg veterans to a new style of fighting games with iconic characters/franchises. Only difference is the type of fg and the franchise the games focus on. The same could be said for any of the vs capcom titles. You may be unfamiliar with pokemon but i can assure you these characters were iconic for the time being. Chandelure was one of the strongest special type attackers in gen 5, especially in the OU tier. Pilachu libre. Idk what you mean by ghost vaporeon but all i can think of is suicune or weevile which one is a legendary for the main series and the other is a very strong dark/ice type physical sweeper. A majority of the cast has iconic characters such as charizard, gengar, lucario, pikachu, machamp, decidueye, grovile, darkrai, mewtoo, croagunk, etc. All of these pokemon are iconic and if you want i can explain how and why. This also brings me back to my original point, “the concept”. Iconic pokemon would attract newcomers or any fgc pokemon fan to play this game. Thats why smash is popular, cause it has characters like mario all the way to niche characters like game&watch (which was a niche character until around his smash introduction)

I dont care for the reason other than the crossover factor. Thats why in my original reply i said that pokken just really needed a gameplay/gamestyle fix. This is how i explain how iconic these pokemon are: (except decidueye wasnt as iconic as the rest) For the iconic part, these pokemon really are. Grovyle (sorry for the typo earlier) and blaziken were the final evolution for the starters of generation 3 of the franchise. Generation three was the game that brought the most newcomers to pokemon. Although this croagunk wasn’t the same, there was one as the companion of generation 4’s detective looker. These two would even help you take out the grunts/baddies in generation 4. Detective looker has made an appearance in the recent games but has lost his fellow companion to what was rumored to be an explosion, but no one really knows. Garchomp is self explanatory if you look at competitive pokemon’s history with dragon types, and the fact that he was on champion cynthia’s team for generation 4. Empoleon was a starter in gen 4 and the first form was dawn’s companion pokemon in the anime and game (dawn was the gender character along with lucas that you could choose between). Generation 4 is pokemon diamond/pearl/platinum btw, and they are being remade this year i believe. Lucario is one of the poster boys that targets the fightjng type fanboys. One of the lucario’s also sacrifices itself to save ash and his trainers in a movie or a show(been a minute since i watched). Suicune was a box art pokemon, meaning she was the main legendary for her game. This game was the first to introduce necessary legendary encounters, which were previously post game content. Gardevoir is iconic from a design standpoint. She was also given a mega form solidifying her placement in the competitive pokemon Uber tier of gen 6 and up. Darkrai was a legendary in generation 4 paired with cresselia which were frequent in competitive play. He also appeared in his own movie cause he would curse people to sleep and feed them nightmares. Charizard is essentially one of the pokemon mascots of the franchise. He was the final form of gen one starter charmander plus one if them had a deep backstory in the anime. Gengar is the first pokemon that appears in the first game’s intro, where he fights a clefairy i believe. Pikachu is self explanatory. Pikachu libre was essentially a better version of pikachu in the main series so long as you didnt evolve it to raichu. Machomp is iconic both because of his design and how you could obtain him, which was only by trading machoke with another player, requiring cooperation with others to work, which he is apart of the few pokemon like this. Scizor is essentially the same as machoke evolutionary wise. Mewtoo is mewtoo. Shadow mewtoo is mewtoo but corrupted. Braixen was the first starter for the new style pokemon game (“3d” esc style). Weevile and chandlure were monsters in their generation but are a bit obscure because of time. I believe this leaves only decidueye, which actually doesnt have much going for him other than being a starter and one of the first pokemon obtained by ash in the anime. Of course they couldve gone with more iconic characters, but they may have not fit the criteria(that i unfortunately dont know) Almost all capcom vs series were decent, rarely bad. They just suffered from legal confrontations and platform releases. Main case is with capcom vs tatsunoko. Its a decent game but it was released in the wii. The wii was mainly for family games and fighting games around the wii era were popping off with titles like sf4 that was released only a few months before capcom v tatsunoko. Capcom v marvel isnt as strong anymore because it doesnt have access to previous characters cause of fox/disney. I just want to make sure that you know i agree pokken isnt great, but if the concept would be great for people not even familiar with fighting games, essentially little kids and maybe teens.

@@KKHell but they are still iconic. Realworld example, people complain about Lebron Jame’s foul calling basketball but he is iconic cause of his skill, shoe brand, representation, and media. This is a negative representation for Lebron but he is well known as a player in the nba for these things. It doesnt matter whether you like the pokemon or not, they are still iconic for one reason or the other. The “reasons” you state as to why you consider them not to be iconic is literally ironic because you essentially state reasons as to why they are iconic in a way. What is gardevoir known for according to you, ugly design makes greaseballs think sex appeal. That makes her an icon, a sex appeal icon for greaseballs(almost everyone was a kid and grew up with pokemon). Garchomp is a piggybacker from cynthia’s pointless fame, so it is iconic for that. Lucario is a “bad ryu clone” or martial arts stereotype, thus he is an icon for that in the franchise. Id be surprised if you have anything left to say at this point other than a pointless insult aimed towards anything. Thats all you’ve been really doing other than solidifying my point just now. What other fighting games do you truly know and also the ones that you dont complain about? And i realised i never said that croagunk was one of brock’s pokemon in the anime

@@KKHell i just have to say bruh. I already covered that these pokemon were decent picks for when the game released. I had already said earlier that they may have not been good now but at that time they were fine picks. Magikarp is iconic, because of what it has going for it. A weak pokemon that evolves into one of the strongest pokemon in its generation that can use dragon and electric moves to counter some of the strongest typing in the game at it’s time. Then you have the gyaradose from gen 2(i believe) that was an icon for being one of the first guaranteed shiny encounter in the franchise. Of course magikarp would be iconic because of the trouble players had to go through to get it’s evolved form, through mainly exp. share or battle switching. If you want you can name pokemon that shouldve been in the game. I would likely agree with you regardless but it just seems like you want to get that off your chest so you can tell me which pokemon are actually iconic.

Baris G yeah it’s a really deep fighting game that if you commit yourself too you’d really like but if you want a more casual experience I’d recommend smash bros(the content is really just in the fighters because they all feel like there own can of worms to learn especially the technical fighters with all there gimmicks)

Too complicated for most of the player base on nintendo systems that think people that learn more than button-spam in smash brothers are no-life sweats.

ken 700 yeah I agree but as a semi-pro smash player (locals and regionals) I feel the reason that people got into smash over pokken is because of the casual things like items and lots of stages. If they were to advertise pokken by its gimmicks like 2d and 3D or fight with your favorite Pokémon then it would get more casuals. Some of those casuals would wonder about the competitive scene and try to get into it.

@@ken7007 Sure its not as easy to get into as Ultimate, but its also about as deep as ultimate, and ultimate isnt even that deep. It was just a game that not only was really unintuitive to get into from a low level perspective, but also not very interesting from a high/top level perspective. The 3D phase IS kind of a 1 dimensional, slow snoozefest in a lot of matchups, and the 2D phase is extremely slow, lacking in options, and is overall very simplistic in its defense/offense interactions. Its just a big mess of gimmicks than don't lead anywhere in particular. It HAS everything, but its all shallow.

I play competitively, I agree that statement's a little much. For specific character's it's not entirely untrue, though: Shadow Mewtwo, Mewtwo, Aegislash, Darkrai, and a few others really do have a ton of systems and resources they have to keep track of, and in general the phase shift system and meter adds another set of resources and move-variables to consider over just health and meter and damage/meter gain/frame data.

You litteraly can’t spend Meter in poKKEn except to burst. I almost disliked the video on that alone. Don’t get me wrong, the game is fun, but saying it’s meter system is even approaching that of Unis is simply wrong

Well theres also support meters, varying burst guages, and cheer skills. For example, a Gengar who lost round 1 has to make a decision if he wants to burst to prevent the loss, or take his chances to save Mega for round 3.

I played the game trial a couple months ago, considering my trash wifi, it ran pretty well online, so I assume it runs great with better wifi. Dunno how active the playerbase is post game trial though

it's got better online than smash does xP though that's not hard, & the community's great if you can catch some of them online, mostly discord based with some twitch overlap
