Another thing was that Nemona was really quiet throughout this whole battle, something that's really unlike herself, and she looked kinda worried. She was the only one who realized that Roy was over relying on his singing with Fuecoco, meaning that he was being predictable and could easily get overwhelmed.

I noticed that, she typically explains things in the anime, like a Brock or a Cynthia (fitting), but she was being told about things…since she couldn’t understand what Roy was doing that would help him win. Maybe, Nemona was seeing part of herself in Roy, and maybe she was once cocky before she became champion ranked and had a crushing defeat that left her kinda demoralized like Roy was. This time looking as a witness of this rather than experienced.

I really really hope that Nemona will play a part in Roy overcoming these issues next week! I seriously love how the writers are setting up the relationship between Roy and Nemona so far - it feels so real, and natural, and beneficial for them both. Long may it continue!

⁠@@MasterofChaldea015 well actually you make a good point, it’s not that surprising that Nemona is placed in that role by people, it’s not too different in the games, she guides you along the path of victory road with testing your strength multiple times and finally battling her for the finale time after you become champion rank. She seems to also be more older than the us as the protagonist so that helps with that, it’s almost like a senior teaching a freshman about the life of high school

The way I interpreted this episode went something like: Roy knew that singing made him and Fuecoco stronger in battle but didn't really grasp why, he had no need to after all. But during the gym test when Roy is asked why he sings with Fuecoco, he says that it makes the two of them stronger after a bit of thought, failing to realize all the times that singing helped their bond outside of battle (especially during episode 60). Rhyme isn't satisfied with this response because singing isn't about helping you win a sports match and feels that her craft is being disrespected/misused. Later in the battle when Fuecoco starts losing and Rhyme begins to mock their singing (because Rhyme thinks that Roy thinks that singing is merely a tool help you win), Roy is clearly not feeling the vigor he had earlier in the battle, and begins singing again simply to spite Rhyme, attempting to "power up" Fuecoco, but it isn't working because Roy and Fuecoco aren't doing it to strengthen their bond or encourage each other. They then lose and Rhyme obviously doesn't pass Roy for reasons stated above.

And what I love about this is it still shows Roy is prone to falling back onto old habits. For him if it works he'll stick to it and he only realizes his faults when the status quo is rocked. It happened with his battle with Nemona where the rain nerfed Fuecoco's fire and he didn't even notice. It happened in his battle with Brassius the first go around and now with Ryme as Nemona was pointing out, he's falling into his own trap of not switching up his tactics when he sees it's continued to work. A one trick pony as Ryme called him. And even Roy seems to have forgotten his humble beginnings with Fuecoco. His grandfather pointed it out about how Roy never mentioned once about Fuecoco's wants. He was too blinded by what he wanted and forgot if he wants Fuecoco to be his partner, Fuecoco is going to have to want Roy too. Their song was born during a moment when Roy actually took the time to notice things, like Fuecoco liking to sing but he was too shy to at first. Once Roy picked up on that he encouraged Fuecoco to keep singing and thus their bond song was born. That's what Roy forgot, how they started, how he actually took the time to notice Fuecoco and his struggles and help him grow. He's too focused on the end goal of battling Rayquaza to remember the actual first time he and Fuecoco formed their song and what it took to bring that song to life in the first place.

I love when characters have recurring flaws that they don't immediately get over easily! It makes them feel so much more real that way! Roy is a prime example of that!!

My favorite thing about this episode is that fact that Rhyme is brutally honest to Roy. She straight up said he’s way too overconfident and he’s not on the same wavelength as his Pokémon. Also love the fact that both her and Nenoma instantly catch on that Roy is spamming his battle song when they both know he’s relying on it too much to the point he doesn’t know when he’s clearly out matched.

I really liked this episode, it shows that Roy still has a lot to learn and it's probably why he's the last to evolve his starter. Rhyme knew he had more potential and she had to be brutally honest

@@eljordinio7647 Her big moment is going to be against Grusha. You know, the strongest Paldea Gym Leader that specializes in Ice-Type (and has a Dragon/Flying-Type Ace), while she is going in with a Grass-Type and a Pokémon that also has never been in an actual battle before.

@@eljordinio7647 Dude, you're crazy. Liko was never going to beat an Elite Four member at her current level, so do you honestly expect her to do much better against Grusha? All you seem to care about is winning, and if anyone loses a battle for literally any reason, you call them weak and act like a spoiled brat. I would personally much rather see the main characters winning battles against opponents they actually stand a chance against than seeing more ridiculous BS plot armor asspull wins that Ash was infamous for. Liko, Roy and Dot are still quite new to Pokémon battles, but they keep learning new things all the time. I'm not saying Liko definitely can't win her battle against Grusha, but I fear that it would require some major plot armor at this point. But of course, you don't care about that, right? If you only want to see wins all the time, this is clearly not the show for you. Go watch some generic isekai BS with OP main characters instead.

He lost and wasn't given the pass by the gym leader just because "I'm moved by you and your Pokemon's bond. Here's your A+.". That's a good thing. The trio hardly won any fight that they had so far, but they always got away with it without consequence. This loss shows that the anime can get serious when it needs to.

This episode is the best roy's episode. From this match we saw roy's dark side. He's overconfidence, rush to win, ambition for seeking power, and become more powerful blinds him. Every time she asked a question he always answered it for power, that's why she told him to clean his soul. She really give him a hard slap in his face, to remind him there's always sky above sky, he's far to be called unbeatable. He needs to be more patient and more humble. Ngl cannot wait for next episode.

Perhaps Kilowattrel's lackluster performance was a subtle nod to Roy's overreliance on his singing gimmick? Kilowattrel doesn't have that, and it performed poorly as a result of Roy overlooking them.

Ryme is actually the kind of person we needed to assess Roy. Roy failing the test was necessary just like it was for Liko getting an emotional breakdown back in her battle against Rika. He has always been upbeat and energetic, but that should not be the case always, at times, one needs to act mature. Hope this training makes him get over some of his major flaws.

It was clear that Roy was already on the path to losing against Ryme from how he acted & when Toxtricity came out. Roy's way of seeing & doing things tends to get him in trouble with himself very often that results in battle failure. He views & does things in only one way to him that makes it easy for his opponents to catch onto it & completely overturn him. If he wants to improve himself as a trainer, that really is something he needs to keep fixing

I kind of think that's the point? It's no coincidence that the second that two Pokemon are needed to pass, the trio's second Mons all get rocked aside from Hatrem but just because she can brutal swing a fight to a close doesn't mean she's able to fight in an official battle. We saw this with Tinkatink where she could hold her own against a wild Orthworm but in the battle with Larry? Instantly clapped by a wing attack from full. Same with Kilowatrel, he evolved cool but he's still can't battle worth a darn especially with just one move. I'm hoping the next arc will start to give the trio a clue their second Pokemon are all behind and start training them more too.

It was definitely very very very harsh! But I think Ryme knows deep down that Roy needs a strong wake-up call like that, or else he'll never grow and reach his full potential. So I think Roy will be thankful in the end, even if he's upset right now! 😁

It wasnt for Ryme necessery to use such words to a child. We must remember she is an adult. Roy and Hogeta have the best relationship in this anime, they are great as partners. She should say that Roy needs to see more potential in his partner, use more of his abilities or use some strategy. But i dont agree with bullying a kid and saying something without any background knowledge. And it was kinda funny that she told him that he used terrastial in desperation, Lol, terrastial in this anime has no strategy whatsoever.

Honestly, i really like this, finally Roy is put in his place, so far i only watched the episodes incurrently in Netflix, but i found Roy extremely annoying due to his overconfident attitude. So i really love that Rhyme put roy in his place, teaching him that he cant just win by singing.

I think this nicely underscored why Dot passed her test despite not defeating one of Larry's pokemon. When Dot struggled, she managed to realise her mistakes, remembered her past experiences and adjusted her strategy accordingly. By considering Quaxlys approach and working with it she also restored their connection during the battle.

It was going a little too smoothly on the tests, always passing, even if losing. And since we hardly see Kilowattrel, I'm not surprised it went down so easily. Before the preview for the next episode, I knew Nemona would be helping with special training. She looked pretty unhappy with Rhyme, too. Rhyme may have had a point, but I don't think we've ever seen a main character be dissed like that in public before.

Yes and no on a main getting dissed or shamed on. Wulfric brutally shamed Ash with how he was using Greninja and its true potential. That was the motivation Ash needed next episode to master the bond phenomenon. Then Ash went max level potential he needed. I think Rhyme said that to push Roy into lowering his powerhungry mind and to have fun whole being stronger. Rhyme does sound harsh but I don’t think it was to mainly to put him down, its to put him on the right track.

She was actually unhappy with Roy. Because, while she agreed that Ryme was too harsh, she still made a good point about Roy being too focused on power. Nemona also likely picked up on Roy's impatience and overconfidence during the match because she was unusually quiet during the test.

From the episode we could see Nemona noticing Roy over-relying on singing to hype up Fuecoco and thus got worried that he was getting more predictable and that he might get easily overwhelmed by Ryme, which is what ended up happening. And wow, harsh words from Ryme at the end, but that the same time Ryme wasn't ENTIRELY wrong. Based on what Larry told Dot after her battle, the reasons she passed despite losing includes "Battling effectively using two Pokemon", "Terastallizing at an appropriate time" and "Observing your surroundings and following your Pokemon's intent." All of these things Roy didn't do too well as Kilowattrel fell quickly to Houndstone very early in the battle due to Roy's recklessness, and Roy's desperation caused his sync with his Fuecoco to break, thus Fuecoco didn't get to unleash its full potential, and when Roy Terastallized, he didn't look as confident as usual as he did that out of desperation and didn't even get to use a single move when Terastallized. I'm sure that Ryme knows that Roy and Fuecoco will understand what she meant before returning for a rematch.

This.. These are facts. Many people are actually comparing Dot passing the test to Roy losing it, even saying that Dot shouldn't have passed either, forgetting the fact that they are proving themselves capable of Terestal Phenomenon here, not to win. I seriously wanted Roy to fail here, because we could clearly see he didn't have any of his perspectives clear, he doesn't even know why he sings. Moreover, he didn't even use his catchphrase while Terestallizing Fuecoco. I am excited to see his future development now, given he got his first major breakdown, not counting that short lived Rayquaza one in episode 33.

I mean not even just nemoa both liko and dot where getting worried too. The singing to getting yourself amp up and in sync was fine but its was clear that he was over relying on it Pretty much thinking hey if we do this we’ll surely win. It was something that was kinda need for Roy and fuecocco.

i really like how theyre hammering home the importance of HOW the trainer uses terastal on whether or not they pass the test. The reason why Roy failed his test wasnt because he lost, it was because how he misused terastal: falling back on it due to desperation. It was also because of him overusing his fuecoco and only relying one a few repeated strategies. i love how horizons makes these kinda worldbuilding pieces clear :D

Roy tends to get stuck in his ways w/out being able to see things beyond or a few steps ahead before it's too late. Which was how Ryme & Toxtricity beat all Roy & Fuecoco tried to do. Even Kilowattrel's loss as Roy repeated the same move instead of looking & thinking another option. Roy thinks too linear & gets caught in his own way which makes it easy for foes to turn the tables on him.

Honestly, despite Roy being my favourite character, he does deserve that huge slap from Ryme. I've noticed that Roy's character is like an average 8 year old child that is very childish and immature. He was over reliant and over confident. Unlike Liko and Dot, both of them are very mature for their age, noticing their mistakes and doing their very best to make up for any casualties caused. That last episode his line about "our song is unbeatable!" well erm yeah it's beatable man I'm really excited to see his character development arc. Having 3 Roy focused episodes in a row, is absolutely amazing and possibly hinting something? I really hope that development arc of his is good and turns him to a likable character for everyone and not just those few. I think Roy's gonna cry in the next ep idk😿

If this episode is the ultimate turning point for Roy to realize its more than just song enhancement to win a battle, I'll be satisfied that Roy is willing to change his formula with his battle style, that sing of his has honest ran its course. Lastly its always better to watch with Subs to get a clearer interpretation of the plot, and to finally see one of our heroes struggles is what the audience need to stay engaged with the growth and world building around each character.

Rhyme was giving Roy some tough love. Calling him a failure was a bit overboard, but I get her reasoning. I expected a better job from Taikaiden, but I understand it since Roy kept him on the back seat after it evolved. The episode is mid, but I guess the point was to set up upcoming character development.

Assuming that Fuecoco will evolve during the rematch, I kinda hope that he won't evolve until _after_ the battle. If Roy's problem in the initial battle is that he tried to use Tera as a crutch, then Fuecoco evolving and winning because of that would pretty much be using evolution as a crutch.

Horizons has had some amaaaazing battles so far. But sometimes it does fall into Journeys territory, with the rushed one-shot fests haha. But the great battles we get definitely make it worthwhile to watch! Like Dot VS Iono, Liko & Katy VS Rika, etc.!

Do you think Ryme will use a Skeledirge in the rematch? The only thing that'll make the rematch more satisfying than Roy defeating Ryme, or at least passing her Terastallization test, would be if his Fuecoco triumphed over its adult form, like how Ash's Pikachu defeated Lieutenant Surge's Raichu.

The only exception was Pikachu versus Surge's Raichu, because that battle was actually well written. But battles like Buizel versus Floatzel, Pignite versus Emboar, Rowlet versus Decidueye? Nope, they didn't make any sense. Plot armor at its finest.

@@dash9641 I guess Ryme's way of doing things to deal with Toxtricity's major weakness to Ground type moves would be to have its sound boosted attacks have so much power to intercept ground attacks before they can reach it. Esp. since Ryme's Toxtricity was able to counteract stomping tantrum with Overdrive (despite typing & thinking about it realistically, it is still a shockwave; as in not like a Shock Wave, but a SHOCKWAVE where it is firing out an energy wave of vibrational force to destroy Stomping Tantrum's earth splinters)

To me it looked more like it was asking the driftloons for a ride. However, terapagos probably didn't consider how far they were going to take it or how it would be able to return to liko. But I don't really think that the driftloons had ill intentions either. They just wanted to take it for a fun ride, but didn't really think about the distance and that the terapagos would have to return at one point. In short, like children who want to go on a adventure but don't really think things through 😂

Knowing there are 3 Roy focused episodes aside, I had the feeling that he will fail especially he kept dishing out attacks that didn't work and as Rhyme said, using terastalization desperately. Also, I didn't like that he replied that singing makes him win, red flag that ultimately lead to a loss. Last thing, Killowatrel was taken out so easily just like Tinkatink, and I think he's taken out faster? not sure. I hope that Hattrem will not suffer that fate, or at least be able to put up a bit more fight. The ED didn't make a Dot illustration too, I'm so sad. Though, at least we do see one of them fail, and I can see why that's the case. I am surprised that they can try again to see if they can pass in the second try. I suppose you can't fail MCs at the end.

Phantom Force's original name in Japanese was called Ghost Dive (but pronounced in english in the japanese version). It's kind of a bit of a nitpick that I've been having with the subtitles as it just confuses people sometimes when they use the original name of move rather than the renamed English version

Gotta be honest, the battle was kinda mid. I really like whole Ryme's character and holy cow Roy can rap really well. But the battle was wack. Kilowattrel performed even worse than Tinkatink and was washed by Phantom Forse and Crunch. Houndstone wasn't any better. Fuecoco vs Toxtricity was alright and I really like, how Ryme instantly put a pressure on Roy by spamming Punk Rock boosted Overdrive. Toxtricity just folded Fuecoco without any chanse to counter. She didn't even use Tera. It's a typical Ash-losing Gym episode and comebacking later. Fuecoco will definitely evolve next week

To be fair, Houndstone almost definitely has the Fluffy Ability. It resisted Kilowattrel's Sparks very well, but since it is weak against Fire, it makes sense why it lost to Fuecoco so fast.

Dot did pass her Implementation test partly because she "battled effectively with two pokemon." Kilowattrel not lasting in the battle probably already failed Roy the test. Perhaps this will be brought up later on?

The way I see it, at least in this case, the message was more important than the battle itself this time. This episode was clearly meant to be setup for the next one when the actual battle between Roy and Ryme is going to take place. So I wasn't expecting it to be the big climatic battle with great scenes for kilowattrel/fuecoco. The next episode is probably meant to be all that.

Thank god rhyme shook some reality into him. Singing a song with your not evolved pokemon isn't a tactic. I really hope they drop the boy with weak not evolved pokemon but a big heart wins fights he shouldn't crap like they did with Ash. Thank god a gym leader finally told a pokemon protag that that crap sucks. It felt almost like watching Cynthia mollywhop Paul.

Well to be fair pokeferlax kilowattrel couldn't really fly properly until it evolved which is the reason why it hasn't been trained all that well despite it evolving. And fuecoco's disarming voice move is a fairy type move which isn't a good match up against poison types like toxtricity so even without that punk rock ability roy probably still would have lost due to over relying on fuecoco and not training them equally

Me personally, I didn't think the match with Taikaiden and the ghost dog pokemon (forgot it's name sorry 😅) was that bad. I was confused at first but realized it played a najor role in something stated later in the episode as a forshadow. It shows that Roy needs to train his pokemon before having them fight and although taikaiden knew some moves, it was from character development and not actual training so he nor taikaiden were properly prepared for that first go.

After think both Liko and Roy replacing Ash I can see the Difference. Liko didn't understand pokemon at first but later on connecting with Sprigatito, getting Hatenna, Sprigatito evolving, doing terastallize test she finally understand about pokemon battles and want to connect with other Pokemons feeling. As for Roy he wanted to be a Pokemon trainer to go on adventures and find treasure even when meeting Flacococo he had a good connection with him with singing. I feel like we didn't get to see more of his character we only focus on Liko, Sprigatito, Dot and Quaxly. And of course i can't forget Wattrel, Wattrel could fly with the other Wattrels because he can't control his wings and how strong the wind is for him after Roy help Wattrel out Wattrel wanted to go with Roy and Roy just sings a song about Flacococo and not about Watteel and that's hurting.

I agree with Ryme she's right Roy spammed spark with kilowatterel makes me feel like he didn't bother to train for this big battle or with kilowatterel at all after evolving so it going down quickly might be for the beat cause I think he would of kept spamming spark. The incident where they re run into rayquaza when it destroys ceruledge and Roy tried to run in with fuecoco to join in people keep telling him he's out classed and he has a hard time actually learning to grow he's gonna keep hitting wall cause he keeps hitting points where he's good enough if Ryme didn't tell him this now he would keep blindly going into things with no hope or shot and hitting walls. Until he get him or his pokemon hurt

I am so sorry but I felt so bad for Roy and Fuecoco within this episode so much, being called a failure really hurts someone or somebody and kinda made me furious at Ryme a lil. the episode isnt as bad as some others say, but I am glad the next episode will be Roy and Nemona and the battle focused ( even a evolution because my boy Fuecoco needs it )
