I was born in the late eighties and I felt like a part of the 'Pokemon craze.' I was 12 when the games came out, but that didn't stop me from being obsessed with it. Although you're mostly right about the age thing; many of my classmates didn't get it, and I got teased for it.

even though im the right age, pokemon always passed me by. it was mostly because i never had a point in my schooling life when i wasnt being relentlessly bullied, so i identified pokemon with the type of person who would beat me up at recess. it wasnt until i gained some perspective and played diamond and pearl that it clicked with me. im still looking forward to playing X and Y though my funds are tied up. Great video, cant wait to see more.

After Gen 4 I go into these games like Ash kinda with my only carry over Pokemon for the main game Glaceon (best eeveeltion) and steam rolling the story and checking out the new Pokemon.
@colechristie6903
@colechristie6903 7 лет назад
No offense, but glaceon is pretty bad. It's mono ice typing gives its many weaknesses. And although it has a good offensive typing, its low base speed ruins it
@RuneRelations
@RuneRelations 7 лет назад
yeah it has alot of weakness, but like any Pokemon you like you end up building a strategy to fit it and capturing Pokemon that complement it through your play-though and in team building. Though I will say even though my Favorite Pokemon is Glaceon when it comes to competitive battling that honor will go to the Galaxy Eyes of Pokemon the Haxorus

The cool thing about Pokemon. Through middle school and high school, most people hid their liking of Pokemon. It was childish. It wasn't cool. Then I got to college, and...everyone's playing Pokemon! And nobody got any shit for it. I saw a guy in one of my classes playing Fire Red on his laptop and nobody cared. I'm not in college anymore, but I've still met quite a few adults who play Pokemon more openly than most people back in my school days. It just goes to show that only kids and immature people care about things being childish and immature.

Not to hate bro, but you and me, we are both Generation Y (google it) i was born in 83 you in 91 and we share the EXACT same line of thought and need. Your 22 and i am 30, but we both own 3ds systems. So instead of saying "well if you where 7-8 in the late 90s" bro i was in late highschool in the late 90s and i had a pokemon card ring of 30 plus people, girls and boys. To this day we keep in touch (most of us) and are pumped for x&y. I respect you, your thoughts and mannerism are very mature, but DO NOT fall into the trap of thinking that many on the internet have. We are the same, so are many of your Gen-y Subbers dont disrespect them because they where "too old for pokemon". Thank you for your content, love it! Only love! :brohoof:

ímho it doesn't matter what kind of game you're playing. you're not more of an adult if you're playing battlefield than if you're catching pokémon all day. its how you behave while playing and more importantly while you're not playing that makes the difference
@Binary911
@Binary911 8 лет назад
Fucking amen. It's the same with being considered childish because you like anime, but then people love movies like Twilight (and most young adult movies), Transformers and so on, which are cattered towards an audiencwe far more childish and inmature than most anime are (that might be a bit of an overstatement though, because there are way too many anime that are etremely childish lol)
@rayex7174
@rayex7174 8 лет назад
yeah you're right there are always some people falling off the grid by overdoing it or bullying other people because they arent playing what youre playing or are just looking at the world differently than you. im always trying to look at peoples personality instead of looking at their looks hobbies etc. because thats what really counts. how ugly on the inside, immature and idiotic would i be for looking at smbd thinking they're childish just because they're watching anime from time to time lol.

2:19 actually, pokemon red and blue was one of the less linear rpgs of its time. Besides being able to choose up to 6 out of 150 unique party members, you could also decide which parts of the story you wanted to complete when, for the most part. It is physically possible, in fact easy to beat the gym leaders in the order brock, misty, koga, blaine, sabrina, erica, surge, giovanni even though the appropriate order is brock, misty, surge, erica, koga, sabrina, blaine, giovanni. Additionally, the rocket side story can be beaten as you come across it, or skipped until you reach parts of the game where you need to complete them to move on (such as the snorlax event), independent of badges

Digi I think that as a media analyst as you describe yourself you should explore putting out more videos on other things that interest other than just mlp. you you seem to be well rounded guy and while i cant speak for everyone else I think that your undercutting the potential for this channel you can/should put out more videos on anime or video games if you truly feel like it or even start new channels for it. But really whatever you want to do is ok with me it's your channel and I truly enjoy all of your videos. You could probably analyze porn and I would still watch it, actually do that for a video that would be hilarious.

I disagree on the age stuff. Born in the late 80s and Pokemon was probably more massive among my generation than anyone elses. in fact, I could blatantly see Pokemon drop off in popularity with kids older than me (too old) and kids younger because they had newer competing franchises (Digimon, YuGiOh, Beyblade) Pokemon was really the show for people born probably from 87-91, we were all around 9,10,11 when Pokemon hit it's peak popularity in 1999 and it was definitely a show aimed at that age group more than anything else. By the time I was 13-14, I had noticed that Pokemon had already massively declined in popularity among people and franchises like Beyblade and Yu Gi Oh were all the rage among kids

So you were 22 in October 2013 (born in either '90 or '91), and yet you say, "by the time I was in the third grade, Pokémon was suddenly not cool anymore." But Pokémania really only hit the west in '98 (about the time you'd be in the second or third grade). Were kids in your elementary school really over the craze in just a year? And did 8 year olds really think they were to mature for a series like Pokémon? I (born in 1990) can recall being in grade 6 or 7 and being somewhat embarrassed about liking Pokémon, but I don't remember 8 year old kids outgrowing the franchise in a year or so.
@TheSorrel
@TheSorrel 8 лет назад
I was born in '91 and remember that the Pokémon Craze stayed up all through elementary school (1st-4th grade in Germany) and then just silently disappearing. Then it was childish for a short amount of time. I remember being all smug about Ruby and Sapphire still trying but my frineds bought the games and when they suddenly started playing it out in the open in 7th grade, nobody bat an eye. Pokémon somehow became an accepted franchise that lost its mass appeal, but never really went out of style.

Same here. Born in 1996, started with Blue and Yellow. My older sister had Red. After that, I got Gold, she got Silver, and we both got Crystal. Then I got Ruby, and she got Sapphire, we both got Emerald. Skip Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Black and White. Then I got White 2.

DISINGENUOUS, dear heart. :) Also, the first time I tried a core Pokemon game, I was in my late 30s with Black and White. MY SON is your age, and he was into Pokemon from the moment it arrived in the US, and as much as I thought the anime was cute at the time, and everyone, kids and adults alike couldn't resist the appeal of Pikachu at the time, I had been under the impression that Pokemon was strictly a game for Very Young Children, so I didn't bother. I bought Black during a time of nagging boredom, just to see what it would be like, and was hooked into it immediately! Once X and Y turned up, I couldn't believe how amazing that was (myself being brand new to the games, so not at all an elitist based on past experience, thankfully!). I only found your video after having taken a listen to the Laverre City theme on this crisp autumn afternoon, wondering if anyone had ever done a retrospective on how wonderful X and Y was in so many ways that, in my opinion, set it apart from all other core Pokemon games. The furthest back I've ventured back in time has been to Heart Gold, which is my second favorite of all the core games. Another totally immersive experience that had me playing for days and days, straight through the end. Anyway, now I'm 44 and after having been a bit let down by Sun and Moon, I still look forward to a new core game. Not sure I'm ready to invest in a Switch without a few other dealbreaker games I require to buy a new Nintendo console, but with luck, maybe it'll be released for 3DS, too?...Seeing as how they've sworn up and down that Switch will not be a replacement. Hmm....I guess that remains to be seen. ;) Thanks for the lovely video, it was nice to hear your perspective on coming of age with Pokemon! It's dear to the hearts of many of all ages, I assure you!

Born late 89' I remember pokemon very fondly and your b-day cake was super awesome. I backed into a pokemon closet but still loved it. I had a fallin out of the series and am now watching it again. Beat X and Y and desided to re play Red/Blue using TamahiHiroka's glitches

Hi there, I really like your video, but the quote that you had to be born in the 90´s to get involved in the franchise ticks me off. I was born 81 and pokémon has been and still is a big part of my life. I have about 36 pokémon related games wich most is the RPG´s, but also titles like stadium, colosseum, mysterydungeon and poképark and so forth is part of my collection. And I am one of those who gets really hyped whenever there is going to be a new pokémon game released, most of the time I prebook them to be sure to get them on their release date. Pokémon is not for a specifik agegroup if you ask me, pokémon is for everyone, nomatter what year you were born.

Man, this almost brings up some painful memories. Not because of the video nor you, but because it reminds me of how I got picked on for failing to give up on Pokémon as well. Pokémon is my life, and while MLP, anime, and other forms of gaming have started to creep into my life, I always think of Pokémon as the origin for my love of video games. Crystal was my first video game ever, and I spent a lot of time just walking around Jhoto with my Feraligatr, seeing if I could find another Rare Candy to give the guy. Going into Gen 3 was when things started to get rough, as I grew apart from old friends as they abandoned Pokémon. Into Gen 4, after the release of Heartgold and Soulsilver, the bullying got so intense that I actually resented the franchise and moved onto something I thought was more 'mature' which was Halo. I thought to myself 'Pokémon's just for kids' but in a bought of loneliness at around midnight one night, I busted out the old Gameboy Advanced and played Crystal once more. The guilt was overwhelming. I was a loser, and when I started playing through Colosseum on my Gamecube, I was freaking out. It was only when i had first laid my eyes on Houndoom that something clicked in my brain. Seeing this awesome looking demon dog made me think 'f*** the haters, if anybody picks on me for liking Pokémon, I'll fight them' and to my utter surprise, this strategy actually worked. Now, I don't go around picking fights, I just don't take anybody's sh*t.

i grew up playing Pokemon as well but liked it more for the concept than for the actual game. my inerest was always a little lack luster. intact most of my early vidioe games were of a much different sort. i played civilization 3 and age of empires 2 as well as some others. these were very formative for me and were probably some of the most influential video games during my childhood. but more important than these games was a few books and movies that i was introduced to at a oddly young age. the first movies i remember watching were the star wars trilogy. i saw those movies when i was 3. i saw them when i was so young because of a mix up at the local block buster. i ended up getting in to a lot of stories of similar magnitude at a young age because of this. some of the more notable ones are lord of the rings ( and the hobbit), hitchhikers guid to the galaxy and harry potter ( although this last one hasn't had nearly as big of an impact on me as the others.) simply put. i like pokemon and i grew up with it but it hasn't effected me as much as certain other media i consumed as a child. notably star wars, lord of the rings ( the hobbit) and the hitchhikers guid to the galaxy .

There are multiple things that make Pokemon a game for a lot of people to play. People like me buy the games for competitive purposes. While I do collect all the pokemon, my main focus is to get the best out of my pokemon, make a good team and battle friends and strangers. The competitive pokemon community is so big, that fans created their own unofficial rules on the side of Smogon where players determinate the rank of a pokemon depending on usage of high ranked players and by banning Pokemon that are usually broken on their respective mods like Singles, Doubles and so on.

my pokemon story: for the longest time as a kid pokemon was practically my obsession. keep in mind i am 15. i enjoyed the cartoons as a kid and even too this day i much prefer the more retro feel of the original series than the current ones. saw just about all the movies up to the zorua one when the 5th generation premiered. saw it in theaters. i'd say it got the biggest for me in the 4th and 5th grade when diamond and pearl came out. i played the heck out of the games and was collecting the merchandise left and right. i also kept tabs on the anime quite regularly. sadly however, i had just transferred to a new school at the time and unlike my old school, i was virtually the only girl interested in the franchise. sure there were a couple guys, but i guess my obsession scared them into not wanting to play with me. so instead of "playing pokemon" as we called it in 3rd grade where we pretty much just did some role play, i was alone on the playground in 4th and 5th grade with no friends just playing away and well, trying to catch em all. sadly however i never finished the current game before the next one came out. i always ended right around the time i got badge number 8. the farthest i ever got was the elite four. never made it past the first one; whatever her name was. i was also bullied and teased alot during these two years. while my obessession wasn't the biggest thing that victimnized me, i was still picked on for that. in 6th grade i became more open to anime in general, though at that point i was less in my own world and more aware of the social outcast i really was. i had no friends and no one ever wanted to sit with me at lunch. this was rather upsetting to me since being social was and still is in fact, one of the most important things to a girls life. while i enjoyed watching several anime series one after another, it still felt a bit lonely not getting to share the experience outside an anime convention that i attended only once a year. by 7th grade i learned to tone it down a bit for the sake of a social life, though other things were going on at the time and i still had no friends; unless you count that fake one i was stuck with for awhile. she was such a bitch. i owned and played the heck out of the pokemon white game, but that didn't last very long. not long after beating gymleader number 2 i lost my ds with the game in it, and it was never found. by then pokemon was more just a thing i did like rather than something i couldn't live with. it didn't take long for me to nearly grow out of it entirely. i was donating old t-shirts to goodwill and i stopped collecting cards and figurines i never played with. i put most of my old plushies away. my mom wouldn't let me get rid of them. she's still clinging onto the drifloon teahouse thing we used to do. i was 10. cut me some slack. it didn't long at all for me to complete the transformation from pokemon game geek to queen bee fashionista with a few anxiety issues. today i feel like i've grown out of pokemon almost entirely. there is a group of kids at my highschool who literally do nothing but play pokemon all day long. i've never seen them do anything else. being on the outside, i finally see how ridiculous i used to look to my classmates. despite having left this big part of my childhood behind, i am however grateful to this period of my life and have no regrets. pokemon was practically the foundation of my interest in the otaku community which is now spent fangirling over catchy hatsune miku songs. actually, if it wern't for pokemon, i wouldn't be the young girl i am today. when i was 8 years old i compeated in a contest at this anime convention. my mom helped me with my costume and makeup and i sang the pokemon theme song. not only did i win, but i got to close the convention out by singing it in front of the entire con of 15,000 people. it was literally the best moment in my life. this is also what started out my love of singing and performing on stage. my love for dressing up whether its for stage as myself or as a character also stemmed way back to dressing up as misty when i was 4. even though there were a few bumps in the road and im not into it as intensely as before, i still genuinely appreciate the time i spent as a pokemon geek and have alot to thank for helping mold the person i am.

Could you stop having a one track mind for half a second and actually realize that those terms mean that they will NEVER make actual games for the PC? They didn't develop Pokemon TCG online or PC Master, only published it. Nintendo didn't even touch PokeROM. Same goes for Pokemon Team Turbo, Masters Arena, "Play It!"(WotC owned the card game then), Ball Launcher, Project Studio, Seek and Find, and Team Rocket Bast Off. So get your head out of the clouds.

Maybe it's because I flinch whenever I see a post on Tumblr beginning with 'Only 90s kids remember x'. While I know that it's rarely meant to be taken seriously, I often feel that kids born in the 90s have this sense of entitlement that irks me, like they're privileged to things from that period without due respect to those in the generation before them who in all fairness most likely have a more vivid memory of these things. It's a knee-jerk reaction I guess.

Even though the graphics are excellent and the controls are great, I still can't justify buying the game on those merits. I'm just not into that many new gen 5/6 Pokemon. There are cool ones, but when the starters were first revealed in Japan, I knew I was done. I do like watching my fiance and sis play theirs, though. :) There's rumors about possible remakes of Ruby/Sapphire. If that happens, I'm so on it! I love my Ruby to bits~ :3 Groudon is my fave legendary.

I was born in '87. If I recall correctly, I was into pokemon for some time, as were many of my friends, kind of got out of it at an unknown point in grade school, but got back into it around middle school. I never owned a NES. Genesis was my first console. So yea, you're kinda wrong here. I was born in 87, but I was a 90s kid. Not the stereotype sort of 90s kid like the guy on atop the fourth wall mind.

Maybe if they ever make an MMORPG, I mean Sega ans Sonic Team released Phantasy Star Online v2 for PC even though the Dreamcast was still alive at the time. Of course I'd not hold my breath on that sort of thing even remotely happening. Fanmade mmos, maybe but not official ones.

Juuuust pointing out you got your maths wrong. I was born in the late 80's (88 to be specific) but I am under 25... for about eight more weeks, but still. I was also born in that correct time and grew up with this franchise.

I was born in 82, as well. :) What's odd is that, even though Pokemon became a huge fad when I was in high school, practically everyone was into it. I resisted the pull for a couple of years till Snap came out.

Hmm.. I forgot if you mentioned this in the video. But why were you unable the keep interest in the Pokemon games, and why did it change with X and Y? Loved the pipe, by the way.

Wow! We've had almost the exact same experience regarding the Pokemon fandom, '91 kids FTW, right down to the fact that I love Gold version and was super excited for HeartGold but in the end couldn't get past the 5th gym. I, unfortunately, haven't picked up X yet since I don't have the money for a 3DS. However when X/Y were announced my husband and I got super into PokeMMO as a substitute and its been great reconnecting with everyone again just like you said. ^_^

Nice vid Digibrony. :) I too grew up in the 90s craze of Pokemon, and my brother Dan was actually the guy who got me into the games and anime. Lately, I'm starting to have an epiphany about my Pokemon experience…for so long, I wanted my Pokemon journey to be on par with the other people I was playing the games with. But this started to change for me after I played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Time & Darkness. Suddenly, I began to really have this yearning to emotionally connect to the story I was playing through once more. And to this day, I still have the old GBC RBY games and a green GBC with cable for trading delight. After I saw Pokemon: The Origins, however, I had an epiphany…my Pokemon journey has really come full circle, as I always knew it would. That special connected the nostalgia and joy I felt during childhood with the "evolving" nature of the series. I don't feel the need to purchase new games as long as I can thoroughly enjoy the quality of the old ones. Every time I restart a game, I feel that pang coming back to me as a new journey begins, and as the games get older, I'll fondly look upon the newer generations and wish them luck.

I have every DS based Pokémon game, along with a sadly dead copy of Silver and a used Fire Red. I'm well on my way to the Shiny Charm in Y, and planning to replay X, because I missed SO MUCH. I even walked right past the girl who hands out Rock Smash when I normally talk to everyone. Derp!

You know I really love your MLP videos, and Pokemon has been a lifelong obsession of mine, born in 1992 I literally do not remember a time BEFORE Pokemon existed. I was browsing your channel and videos and when I came across this I thought it was pretty amazing that one of my favorite MLP analysts also liked Pokemon. I was going somewhere with this but I forgot where so I'll just leave on the fact that you're awesome and I'm really glad that I found your videos.

This is the GTA,furry,internet,indie games, generation. and my favorite, the you-can-now-pretty much-live-online-by-getting-welfare-and-having-a-really-cheap-house generations :D. when im older i plan on making alot of money,then getting a horrible house and just living online through welfare.

I know this video is a bit old now but.. Are you familiar with the idea of a Nuzlocke? I don't tend to play 'hardcore' rules myself but the idea in general is another way to make the game more challenging as well as potentially end up using Pokemon you might never use otherwise. In a 'true' Nuzlocke, you can only catch the first Pokemon you see on each route, and if a Pokemon faints it is 'dead' and you release it. Heals are generally very limited though I've seen varying rules on how much so. Sometimes you're only allowed one Pokemon Center visit per town, sometimes you can use the center all you want but can't buy any healing items, etc. My favorite variation is that rather than releasing- the thought of which had always made me legitmately and irrationally angry at Nuzlocke players- 'dead' Pokemon are stored in a 'graveyard' box, and if you beat the game (or give up lol) you can 'revive' them. :3 Other variations include things like the first time I ran through W2 I did a pseudo-nuzlocke, which was extra interesting because while many things were the same from White there was still a lot I didn't know about the game and couldn't plan for. But partially because of that and partially just because I wanted to, I enacted a "veto clause" where if I really really didn't want the first Pokemon I saw on a route I could take the second instead; I still had to take one of the first two and still only one per route, though. I also enacted a "bullshit clause" for things like... the 95% accuracy move misses twice in a row and the Pokemon I'm fighting uses Magnitude 10 where I probably could have survived Magnitudes 1-8. Some players might much enjoy having such wild variables in play, and that's cool. Personally, I felt like something with one in a million odds shouldn't punish me at something I tend to struggle at a bit anyway. X'3 So any time I felt something qualified for the bullshit clause I'd either soft-reset if I'd saved right before or just revive the one Pokemon that fell to it (still boxing any others that may have died in the same timeframe). My best friend also decided on a rule I liked, which was that any Pokemon KO'd by your rival (in addition to Professor Sycamore in XY) could be revived because you guys are friends who should know how to show a little restraint in your sparring. (Of course this logic wouldn't work for a rival like Silver, but for games that it would, heh.) Whatever the case, rules can be adjusted to be ultra hard mode or barely different from regular play or anything in between, but the core basis- that (A) team is limited and decided more by chance than choice, (B) most or all instances of fainting remove a Pokemon from your team for the duration of the game, and (C) healing is at least somewhat limited in order to keep a reasonable level of risk/challenge- is another way to change up the Pokemon experience and keep things feeling fresh and different. :3

1989 reporting in. I had blue, yellow, gold, and crystal and seriously enjoyed them all (also ended up buying firered, sapphire, heartgold, and black). Gold was probably my favorite, I loved the introduction of the day/night cycle the cool character with his hat backwards. I spent so many hours and so many AA batteries playing blue and gold version on my gameboy...definitely an important part of my childhood. Thanks for doing a video on it!

Child of 86, owned and completed virtually all of the Pokemon games. Having completed the Diamond and Black 2 Pokedex's respectively. And now once Pokemon box comes out, I'll be able to complete X's Pokedex too. For the first time in a long time, I actually feel like I'm at a high enough standard to take on some of the best battlers out there via Wi-Fi. Would you care to exchange friend codes? Your analytic videos really do entertain me. 3969-5022-7120.
