The Polaroid I-2 is better now! Firmware update fixes auto exposure issues!

After a year of dodgy photos, Polaroid are finally fixing the I-2's auto exposure issues with a firmware update!
The new firmware - labelled "1.02.1" - is currently available on the Polaroid Android and iOS apps and can be wirelessly sent to your camera over Bluetooth
I covered this topic last month or so, but decided to pull the video for reasons that I discuss in this video. When I was sent the firmware update, I WAS told in a message not to leak information out, but I simply did not see that aspect of the message, since it was among several I received at once. There was no specific instructions on what I could/couldn't report on and I was never asked to sign an NDA (I have in the past with other companies). In my excitement that a major issue had been rectified, I released a video praising the new firmware. I would like to formerly apologize if this caused trouble.
The firmware update sadly doesn't add a battery door that makes the built in lithium ion battery user-replaceable without complete disassembly of the camera... but it does fix the cameras other major issue! Wonky auto exposure!

Please please PLEASE make that as an injection molded part. I was working on the same kind of 3D printed mod for a removable battery. You would have my money in a heartbeat

@@theinstantcameraguy I would love to see an injection molded part from Johnny, mainly if the color, texture, and finish were near spot-on, though I imagine this might be difficult because I heard it has a rubberized feel similar to the Polaroid P3

After having a I-1 back when it came out i just stick to my reliable MiNT slr670s 👍🏼 If Polaroid make a i-3 that’s foldable and has a removable battery , I’m back in 😎 Great video btw.

I’d love to give this camera a try the biggest issue I have is the battery not being able to be replaced easily by myself, tho if I could get a battery door installed like you did I would buy one to add to the collection. I’m glad you made this video.

I got an even simpler argument for user swappable battery. This is a camera, meant to take photos, if I run out of juice mid pack, I can swap the batteries on my Pentax P30, or Canon EOS 5000, or for that matter, my mate's modern digital camera. Here you'd have to, what, carry an external battery, have an awkward cable sticking out going to your pocket or bag to be able to shoot again? On top of being able to replace it when it wears out, being able to have a couple batteries to swap out while out shooting is a *great* feature to have on a camera, and honestly, most every battery powered devices we use nowadays on the go. Also, heck yes, I'd want that mod case, since I am planning on getting an I2 sometimes, would be great! Anyway, thanks for your video, got plenty quality content on your channel! Cheers!

Also yes you should do a run of the 3d print to show what it would look like, that might show polaroid even more that it’s possible

I bought an I-2 early on after trying one out at an event. I had been begging for a polaroid camera that was just consistent with its exposures. Even my refurbished SX-70 wasn't always a surefire bet, and when you're spending dollars per frame, you want it to be. Initially, I thought the exposure issues were a film problem and just adjusted my exp. comp to make up for it. Given time, though, I realized that if the camera was consistent in overexposure, it must be a meter problem. I got rid of the camera, and am till this day still upset about it. I love the polaroid format so much more than instax. For me, there is no excuse not to have the best meter they can in these cameras, considering the narrow dynamic range of the film. Maybe I'll get an I-2 again, I have a project coming up, and it would be really nice to have an I-2 working as it should.

In terms of SX-70 cameras, getting the camera to expose correctly on the old 1970's PCBs can be a very dark art - especially if the electric eye shows signs of corrosion You should look into the SX-70R PCB upgrade for your SX-70. I have videos about it on my channel that you can search for. Basically it replaces the 'brains' of the camera and gives it a super accurate auto mode, as well as many other features
@Jsoberon
@Jsoberon 11 дней назад
@theinstantcameraguy I think you replied to my Reddit post about this not so long ago. I was asking which cameras have the best meters. I no longer have that SX-70, and I'll probably wait for a good deal on a decent condition SX-70 to send your way for refurbishment and an upgrade. I-2 battery is still an issue for me. I'm disappointed how desensitized we have become to the worsening quality and standards of products.

the reddit copium was pure insanity, defending the exposure issues! As for the 12months timeframe to fix the firmware it sounds super harsh, but it clearly seems that polaroid should've delayed the I-2's launch. It was marketed as the second coming of Edwin Land when it was just the emperors new clothes. a lotta of communication from the company is stiff too, for such along fixtime a nice "yes we hear you all, were working on it" would've been better than radio silence expecting the community/press to think its user error

I don't own one myself, but I have heard the exact same issues coming up with the NOW+ and it would be great to know if they fixed the issues with that one too. Granted it does have a "Manual" mode but its by no means the same as the I-2, and the fact the NOW+ is advertised as more of a point and shoot.

I buy my vacuums from shark, not because they're a good vacuum (they are good enough for the price) but because the battery is easily and cheaply available. They added a flap on the bottom on nearly all their battery powered vacs to replace the battery, and it has a nice easy click on connector. you could buy a second battery if you had a house that needed more than 30 minutes to clean. also many of their vacs have a removable brush and belt, if the belt snaps or degrades or you want to clean the hair out of the brush, it's just a coin/screwdriver and a pair of scissors later you got it fixed. it's simply better to make devices that are meant to last with the most basic amount or repairability. I have many radios that take a nokia BL-5c battery. it would've costed them nothing to have a door to slot in a battery like an actual camera. Two things that will kill the world, either there's either a war that kills everyone, or pollution (which pollution is more likely to kill us all faster)
@JessicaFEREM

I always look at it from this perspective, there will be a time when the old Polaroids are completely gone. will this camera live on when it's repaired in 20 years when people dust them off and start shooting with them again? if it's at least on par with their old ones more or less, then I'd consider that a win. does it vibe the same as a vintage polaroid, y'know. I think that minus the app (which was a good idea in retrospect) this is a pretty good camera it seems. polaroids are not cameras you buy for objectively good photos, you buy it for the vibes of printing out your photo right then and there and handing it to someone or scanning, or putting on the wall.

I updated my i-2. But I see no change. I tolk two pics, one in auto mode. The result still very over exposed. Then I shot one in aperture mode. Still overexposed. Then I uninstalled the app, reinstalled, and updated the camera again. Still no improvement, so I went back to underexposing -2/3. am I doing something wrong

You weren't "sort of in the wrong." You were wrong. Learn to admit your mistakes and be more apologetic about it. You got an early copy of firmware. It wasn't fully tested and you reported on it. You don't need an NDA. You're an influencer who relies on establishing a working relationship with all the companies that sell "instant cameras" of which there are few. If they chose to blackball you, what happens to this channel? The entire "my bad" thing doesn't work. The entire, "well they buried the request down in the e-mail," so I shouldn't be at fault is stuff children say to their parents.

@@rolando_j_ but I did apologize? For the record, "Polaroid" never contacted me. There was no email. It was all done by one rogue engineer over messenger who sent me several messages. I genuinely missed one of their messages - and in my excitement - released a video too soon, which I later pulled. Much of what I reported on in that first video was also written publicly in a forum by the same engineer - and was not private knowledge. In terms of me being an "influencer" - I've been repairing Polaroid cameras for 12+ years, had a RU-vid channel since January, and Polaroid has never reached out to me in an official capacity, yet I've still released 79+ videos. I don't have a "working relationship". I've always been independent. I'm not sure you can burn a bridge when I never had a bridge to burn
