I got a 2023 Polestar 2 LR with the Plus and Pilot packs with the 20" wheels in White (Snow). LOVE the car! Handles amazing, feels solid, inspires me to drive! Oh and every time I park and walk away... I cant resist looking back!!
“Not that fast, 0-60 in only about 4 seconds.” The new world of EV driving. May not be plaid, but elicits screaming from back seat regularly. I’ll take really fast and great handling and brakes over plaid any day.
Hey Marques, this is exactly the difference between you and other car reviewers, you like the technology, they like the car. Someone that likes cars appriciate car handling more then just speed. Non of it is good or bad, just different. As always, great video thank you!
This is the vibe i get as well. Fast 0-60 speed times isnt a hard thing to do with EVs. The feel, feedback, improved handling characteristics can be more challenging to create. But I do feel MK is getting better at realizing some of the points most traditional gear heads loved.
It’s really amusing to me that people that worshipped 0-60 and 1/4 mile times have suddenly changed their mind that these are no longer important because EVs started blowing away ICE vehicles 😂😂😂
@@mavfan1 People can't evolve their thinking? Do you still have the same opinions about everything that you did a few years ago? These are fast changing times. People are allowed to change their mind, you included 💯.
@@mavfan1 It's not even just EVs. A 6,000lb Ford Raptor R can do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat 0-60 in 3.6, Challenger Demon 0-60 in 2.3 seconds, Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 0-60 in 1.66 seconds. Electric motors with max torque available at zero RPMs just makes it that much easier to achieve crazy 0-60 times. Balancing a vehicle that will handle better on a track has always been much more difficult than cars built for 0-60 or 1/4 mile runs. Are you new to the car world?
The big hump in the floor in the middle of the back row is because the batteries are arranged in a T-shape. They go through that center tunnel to the back seats and then go outwards under the rear seats. The Polestar 2 is based on the XC40, which started out as a gas/petrol car and that is probably why the idea works fine in the XC40 electric but not in the Polestar 2 with the lower roof (killing rear headroom).
I don’t get why he would never recommend it? It’s an electric Volvo that maybe should have some more backseat leg room. This is more of a car for car people not a tech lovers haven.
@@Jo-lw5dm I mean to be fair, the backseat room in this video is with the extreme case of 2 6'3 people right behind each other. it is fine or even good for most occasions. and yeah I haven't found any EV that has as much going for it at 50-65k than this
As an owner of a Polestar 2, you buy it for the driver-focused cockpit and the absolutely S-tier chassis tuning. It's an EV for people who love to drive, not an EV for tech enthusiasts who just want to get from point A to point B (those people go get a Model 3).
Audio was much better than the previous one. The addition of the shotgun mic worked well. Thank you for the great reviews. You manage to thread the needle well - pointing out flaws while still maintaining a positive tone in the video.
That grey version with the black stripe is one good-looking vehicle. Reminds me of a Mustang (not the electric ones) from the front, especially with the stripe.
It definitely looks like a Mustang! Which is great but they need to work on these fatal flaws. Polestar is really a great company but I dislike the car as they prioritized design over functionality like with the glass roof and interior back seats.
Getting the chance to regularly drive both a tesla amd a polestar 2 over the summer. The tesla feels good 0-100 but stepping on the pedal from a rolling 20-30 kmh it feels like the polestar throws you back onto your seat significantly harder. Also the doors and everything inside feels SOLID
@@pepstein just the dual motor but it was also against the base Polestar 2 with the softer suspension. Doesn't put the top performers against each other but still enough acceleration to feel it in your stomach 😂
@@megazillia ah, that makes sense then. Model Y dual motor 0-60 spec is 4.8 seconds, which is half a second slower than the standard dual motor Polestar 2. You can definitely feel half a second. Model 3 dual motor is a tenth of a second faster than that Polestar, which is close enough you’re not going to feel any difference. Performance Model 3 and Y are sub-4 seconds, which is definitely more horsepower than most drivers will regularly take advantage of.
@@pepsteinAnd one difference with M3/Y vs Polestar is that Tesla catapults from stand still super fast. Polestar does not provide full power from stand still and is more optimized to provide excellent passing power like from 60-120 kmh (and then provide also full power).
We've owned out Polestar 2 for a year annd a half and love it. We've used the back seats probably 3 times, our kids are grown up and gone. So far it's been a great car, we don't road trip often so 99% of our charging is done at home in our HEATED garage....a must have in MN! My wife and I have Pixel phones so the Android Automotive OS seems very intuative. Two complaints, they haven't unlocked the Pixel headlights in the US, and I wish more apps were available.
Great points made here. I’ve been driving my Polestar for about 2 years. I chose to lease rather than buy as they had an incredible offer at the time. The biggest selling point for me was the cooled seats, which is surprisingly hard to find in this class of EV. I live in Las Vegas and this was my first cooled seat experience: now I can never go back. The seat upgrade costs about the same as the performance pack and it feels like every press car is equipped with the latter, but I promise the effect of a more comfortable seat far outweighs that of an extra 70 hp.
Agreed about the cooled seats. Australian here, I have cooled seats in my car which turn on automatically at a certain temperature difference, I love it! LOL
Plus you can get a "performance software update" for I think $1200 to get the extra horsepower on the AWD car without the performance pack. So you can forgo the fancy shocks, expensive brembo brakes and larger wheels, but still get the additional HP.
I have a Polestar 2 (with all upgrades (PPP) but not the BST version) and here are my thoughts: 1. Great performing car. The 0-60 doesn't really tell a full story in terms of performance and tends to have better torque, drive feel, break performance, and heat management compared to other EV's in it's class. Also fantastic AWD. 2. Range is mediocre at best (it's not the worst, but its certainly not great for the price) 3. It's a great looking car, I'm constantly being asked by strangers what my car is. 4. Interior is basic, but I like that. 5. 1 cup holder?? Like, wtf? Too basic... 6. I actually like the no frills Android auto infotainment system, its far superior to almost every OEM system I ever used (for a similar vehicle, the Ioniqs infotainment system was an extreme eye sore) 7. Back seat is small, but I'm never riding back there. 8. the Car is supposedly one of the most environmentally friendly vehicle ever produced. 9. The car is way overpriced and if you're really interested in it, you should really only look at them used with 10k miles on them for the real price. 10. Hard to fit smaller rims on the vehicle with those custom brembo breaks so tires are $$$$$. Still love the car, easily the best vehicle I've ever owned, but don't get one thinking it's something that it's not.
one of the most environmentally vehicles ever produced… until the thing breaks or gets totaled and suddenly that massive T shaped battery is sitting in a landfill
@@jesusdontlikethatimgaybuts9493 What does the shape matter? If it was a square that was impacted it would still be totaled. And if you just mean batteries in general. Well yea no shit, but Car engines with their oils and rubber gaskets are not good either. No car is landfill proof.
I have a 2023 Ioniq 5 and took the Polestar 2 for a test drive. I really did enjoyed the drive. One thing that stood out the most, the Polestar 2 felt more solid in every aspect from driving to more secure when you take a seat. My eyes are set on the Polestar 3 so we shall see how that drives when its available.
100% true that it would be insane to spend $80k on a car like this. But that's also why the used EV market is so great. You get fun quirky cars at better prices determined by their true value to the public
I think one of the main reasons this vehicle is so cheap on the used market is that nobody really knows what it is. Add that to the fact that almost all the used ones available were Hertz rental cars.
We've had our P2 for 2 years and have absolutely loved it. Best vehicle we've owned and the insurance on it is insanely cheap, might have something to do with Volvo not sure. Great video, agree with all of the issues, however the build quality is far better than most other EV's at this price and that really sold us.
Love the Polestar2! Rented one in Scotland for a week. Nav was flawless, drove great, plenty of room for 4 (we're nowhere near 6'). So much more solid and quiet than our Tesla M3 at home. Thanks for the look at the refreshed performance version.
The hump in the back seat is there because it's built on the same platform as the Volvo XC40, which has a gas version. My understanding is they fill it with batteries on the electric variants.
Yes, to add on, this was an existing Volvo concept design that they quickly brought to market rather than waiting to design something from scratch. Future models will be entirely built from the ground up to be electric with a less Volvo present design language
It is also worth noting that dispite every reviewer saying that flat floors are an EV thing they are not. This floor design is far more about chassis rigidity than anything else even in petrol cars.
I still love my P2 after 18 months driving it. All your points are valid. As for the transmission tunnel, it's because P2 is built on a hybrid platform (CMA), shared with the XC40 and C40
@@nooshiofficial test drive a P2 and a Model 3 you'll see why. I also prefer the looks and build quality of the Polestar (it's a Volvo). Range and tech gimmicks don't matter to me. I want a car, not a moving PC.
I recently had a chance to drive a dual-motor long-range version during a weekend and I loved it. It's a shame they're so underrated. The best handling-to-comfort ratio I have experienced on an EV. Design wise it looks ace in real life. The only major downside for me was a narrow foot area in the driver's area but I got used to it in the end.
Also build quality is amazing compared to tesla. It’s more on volvo or saab level, maybe not koeniggseg for material choice. But build quality is best i’ve seen on any car.
@@YaYousef5Other reviewers may drive it, but they are still describing what they feel because you can’t tell by watching a video. So he just trimmed the BS out. 😂
He's a terrible car reviewer. There is more to cars then sitting inside and judging them based on 5 minutes of observation. If you want those kind of reviews just go to the dealership and walk around one for 5 seconds lol.
I definitely love the polished videos on the other MKBHD channels with the intros and the cool camera shots and graphics, but there is something refreshing about a candid video filmed with a cell phone, too! The "Oh, I forgot to show you this" part and other things that are unscripted just make Marques really relatable! I'm going to keep watching all videos on all channels of his! :)
@w1ndw4ker95 Yeah, it does look like a Rode mic or something in the shadow. He does use phones that he's testing to shoot the Auto Focus videos, too. I guess I just meant that this channel's videos are a great change of pace like listening to your favorite artist do an unplugged set and he's excellent off the cuff, too, in these videos.
I have a long range dual motor p2, bought second hand low mileage for a great price and it’s a great car. None of the things highlighted here bug me that much as an owner. It’s a fun car to drive and it’s a quality built car all round.
"Boys! Marques is filming again in the parking lot, let's get our equipment as loud as we can, keep that truck in Reverse gear, keep that beeping going. Hammer that hammer! Noise we need more noise!" "Oh also get those seagulls to talk!!! Let's go!!" Edit: But for real, the patent-pending Auto Focus sit down the front of the car for the ending video is chef's kiss. Love that you do this on your videos.
Yeah, it's very close to a Tesla Model 3 in basically every way, in some ways better. Just efficiency lacks a tad, but even that has been solved with the 2024 models (except the US, which doesn't get the new battery). Infotainment is one of the best in the business, imo. It's easier to use than Tesla's, even if it doesn't have as many gimmicks.
@@michaelrichter2528no one is buying this for exclusivity lol. 10 years from now this car is not gonna be remembered for anything other than being a disposable EV. No one will even know or care about the special numbered "BST" which has 0 brand cache or clout. No one buys a Volvo EV because it's special. These are not nearly as special as older Volvo's
@@BCJDM Allow me to clear the mist in your brain :) - Polestar have build 230 of this BST version for particular EV enthusiasts, hence the price - as someone has correctly pointed out. Every time a car manufacturer builds a special edition there is a plan in place, the study is done if they can sell, to whom and what should be the price - it's called marketing department. - 10 years from now the brand will still exist, as they are currently selling good numbers is US, EU and UK. Considering the current and following legislations, the path it's already clear and it's set by governments - not by manufacturers. - about the disposable EV's - most of the EV batteries nowadays are over 90% recyclable. There is also a trend to build cars with materials that can be recycled. Again, the governments have a big part in this strategy and manufacturers have to comply. - the EV market it's not address to everyone, it's not for masses - at least not in present. You can definitely not compare it with older Volvo's, that was a different era with different priorities. The company has been bought by the Geely group, so might be the case it wasn't doing so great back then, instead they are building new models now for a new market.
Am i the only one who thinks that whenever Marcques shoots these videos on phone it's better ....because he doesn't edit these videos too much the hdr and auto focus and zooming issues are so much more visible here on a professional camera. Would love to hear more from you all!.
@@oddvar6654 That's the whole point of the comment you're replying to lmao, shooting on a phone makes it a much simpler experience for both the videographer (Marques, here) and the viewers. Shooting on a camera gives all the issues mentioned above
You can pick up a second hand polestar for significant savings, then all those flaws are much easier to live with. I definitely agree with you about the handling, I have a performance package model and the composure and body control is shockingly impressive.
I gotta say, the audio is awesome on that one but I think I prefer the video style of the Iphone. I find the lens distortion and the stabilisation a bit disturbing, especially inside the car. The resolution and the quality of the image are better for sure, but i feel like the onehanded shooting inside the car was better with a phone. Still a great video, always like your takes on these EVs ! Cheers
@@nairou2 not always an iPhone* tho. Any recent phone he reviews - but yeah the phone recording adds another dimension to the videos since it also allows us to see the true quality of a phone camera
I had to come and say the opposite. I agree with a bit of the stabilisation - but this camera doesn't suffer from the haloing the iphone creates around Marques' face - I don't know if it is some hdr thing that apple gets wrong, or if it is because of his complexion and apple just can't properly tune their colour science for black faces... But that single thing makes the iphone camera unbearable for me to watch, trumps any other flaw other phones might have - too distracting, artificial, etc
@@prgnify Good point, I was mostly agreeing about phone use in general. This video had a lot of issues I don't normally see. I think the Android phones he often uses have given great results.
I rented a Polestar 2 for 2 weeks. I didn't like how much pressure was needed when pressing the accelerator to get the car moving from a complete stop. After a couple days, this got easier. Its a heavy car but this actually made it feel solid and well balanced on the road. I HATED the driver profiles and the head-unit's interface. What a pain in the ass. Overall, I really enjoyed this this car and feel that it's a better option vs a Tesla Model Y. Manufactures need to bring physical knobs and switches back. Especially the companies with horrible software UI.
I find it interesting that you say this is a crossover competing with the Y. This is absolutely a sedan with a hatch. They even call it a "car" on their website. And, I'd take cornering abilities anyday over straight line speed. 4 seconds 0-60 is PLENTY fast enough for anyone.
Excellent review. I’m not on a EV market but I’d definitely love to own this Polestar. Volvo DNA, gorgeous and distinctive design, perfect size for my needs.
I cannot reveal too much, bt yea I've been using a coach ' 'and through his guidance, I've been able to make approx. $24,000 in dividends on a monthly basis, it is pretty straightforward, not as complicated as it used to be,
Well the Polstar 2 looks cool. And has some very unique features but for $80K I think there are better options for the money. Who every edited this video they did a awesome job getting all that noise down to a level that was barely noticable.Great Job!
In Europe we like performance that involves going around corners. Which is why the upgrades on this car include handling updates rather than straight line speed.
I don't know if somone one already mentioned it but at 7:10, that glossy black case (which contains a cloth for the screen) is covering a second cup holder. It's not the most ideal location, as if the cup is large you have to keep it open. Also, what phone is this being shot on?
I drove this and model 3 and really liked the build and drive quality of this car. I have the dual motor and it was 55k with a 7.5k tax deduction. Compared to the model 3 in that price range the compromises are range, back seat space and depending on model straight line performance. What I care about : this a drivers car it corners as well as my BMW, straight line 0 to 60 in 4.4 , I like the android auto integration compared to Tesla software.
Wow, I drove this exact model before Marquez! I felt pretty much the same way. It’s a solid car that has some weird issues that were kind of annoying but not a dealbreaker. The back seats are small but fine for our kids. When my wife was in the front I could sit okay in the back since she is shorter, but I’m a little shorter than Marquez and my head was also touching at times. It really does handle like a car that weighs a lot less, despite this thing weighing a few hundred pounds more than my Telluride which is a full SUV! And it feels really fast on the road. My biggest gripe was the front seat comfort, where if you move the seat back, you don’t have a good rest for your arm because of how oddly shaped that part is. That and the built in Google Maps app sucked. It was horrible. Even in areas with perfect coverage it just wouldn’t load half the time, and when it did work it seemed glitchy to me. Meanwhile CarPlay was perfect. Odd little car. I wouldn’t buy one either, but I wouldn’t be upset if I had one. It fits a strange niche. It’s like some things are premium that probably don’t need to be, while other things should be better quality than they are. And it could use more range. Bottom line: Everything except the driving experience is just a bit unbalanced. Difficult to describe until you spend some time in one. I got to drive this one for the full range.
I test drove the Polestar 2 and agree with your description of the handling. It was easily the most fun car I have ever driven. Even the non-performance version was super zippy, and tuning the steering to be stiff I found it handled incredibly well. Unfortunately, the "V" shape of the center console made it impracticably uncomfortable for my legs, and I'm only 5'11". I'm surprised your 6'3" did not complain about this. Ultimately I decided there was no way I could road trip in a car where I had no comfortable place for my legs, and opted for the EV6 instead. Shame, because I've driven Volvos for over 35 years.
I own a 2021 Polestar 2 Launch Edition and I love it, already did 1 track day and 1 autocross event and handling is amazing, the way it handles turns and corners is amazing even tho it's a Awd car it handles good, lowkey better than my brz. Only thing I dislike about the car is when you drive hard battery life does go fast and the cup holders but love the car also my first Ev car. Good Vid !
I test drove a Polestar 2, Model Y performance, Model 3 performance, and Lucid (forgot the exact model but it was priced at 250+k canadian dollars). Polestar 2 felt the best.....most comfortable, solid, tight, and I liked the more simplified interface much better than the others. Even if I won the lotto today and had to pick just one of those I test drove, it'll be the Polestar 2.
Last Nov I got the Polstar 2 2024 facelift single motor long range version. I can totally recommend it. I like almost everything about this car. Single motor rear wheel drive is enough for most people. I have only few issues with it: -price, could be lower but you get a lot of tech and equipment and in my case I got a very good deal -the cup holder situation -the back is not for tall people (although in my case for 2 kids in the back it is totally fine) -they could have made it slightly more aerodynamic and efficient. Yes, I know Polestar focuses a lot on design and they don't want their cars to look like eggs but bmw i4 looks good and it has much better drag coefficient. Between this and tesla I think it comes down to couple of things. If design is very important for you, if you prefer more old school interior (where there is much more than giant ipad in the middle), if you don't like Elon and have a bigger budget or get a good deal on the car than Polestar 2 is great choice. If the most important for you is efficiency and 0-60 time and you like super minimalistic design than tesla model 3.

I thought it was cute how you called extra precision, handling, etc upgrades rather than raw speed “unusual” because to me that’s the norm; but had to remind myself most American “performance” cars are dragsters! It’s all about the way roads are commonly laid-out I guess, city grids and freeways so prevalent over there. While most roads through old forests or whatever in Europe are laid-out like a Californian mountain road.
I have a 2023 P2 LR and love it. One of my favourite features is the ease and simplicity of the UX, the Android x Polestar software is brilliant even as an iPhone user. My biggest complaint is lack of wireless Apple car play, and the 2nd cup holder (lack of!). I’m not into Tesla myself, and it’s a great alternative to the model 3.
My girlfriend summed it up best when we test drove one with the idea of trading in my Model 3 Performance: "If your Tesla is an iPhone, this car is an Android". Depending on who you are, it could mean many things.
I own this exact car and I love it. It's the most enjoyable driving ev I've driven. It is unreal. The price is fine. I would rather this than anything else. It's also not about 0-60. It's about the total enjoyment. The look, the feel, the drive. It's like art. If it appeals to you, it's worth it. And just to note, with software updates, I'm at 0-60 in 3.8 Tesla would advertise it at 3.5 with rollout.
I bought a PS2 a year ago because the others you mention weren't available (at least not easily) in Australia at the time. But I love it, despite the flaws.
I couldn't hear any background noise while you were shotting, so your camera did a great job with that. It was slow to change focus at times and was a little shaky at times, so not as smooth on stabilization. It was still a great video. I appreciate you being honest about the car even though they lent that to you to promote it in their favor.
Yeah I agree buying a new would probably be goofy but you can get a polestar 2 used for less than 30k. At that price, its a huge yes. Not giving money to Elon musk is just an added bonus.
I actually really like the build quality of the Polestar 2's i have leased. The driving is enjoyable and the battery life is better than you think. recommended!
Love autofocus channel but I wish that the cars that were tested were more of the normal trim level instead of the limited special edition versions that most people will not see.
There is actually a second cup holder underneath that arm rest and that little paper doohicky. (Which is a weird place) Also the transmission tunnel is hard baked into the platform that also holds the like of lync&co and the Volvo XC40
As much as I love MKBHD content, this review is full of BS… let alone the poor video quality and phone constantly looking to focus… Ex Tesla Model 3 LR owner, I just ordered a Polestar 2 BST 230 in nebula. I’ve ordered a Model 3 refresh but I ended up canceling the order as, here in Europe, it was more expensive than the BST. I’ve got a cool deal with fleet discount and various other discounts that ended up being cheaper than the Tesla. I do agree that Tesla remains the reference in terms of EV efficiency and user interface but the Polestar is more of a car. I do get that Polestar aren’t for everyone but bashing it like that must be an American thing
At 10:40, the Polestar 2 rides on the same platform as the Volvo XC40 and C40, which include ICE, HEV, PHEV, and EV variants, that's why there's a transmission tunnel.
The transmission tunnel is not wasted space because some of the car's battery is inside it. I find the center-console gives the driver the sensation of being in the cockpit of a fighter aircraft. It's all very Saab-like: a driver's car and not just a means to get from A to B as fast as possible. You take this car out to have fun on the back roads as well as to do daily humdrum trips.
Rented one last week and I thought it was brilliant. Much. much better than the Model 3. Nothing like a Volvo. I tried an XC40 recharge previoualy and it was rubbish.Polestar 2 superb, with many elements that just work for the comfort and pleasure of the driver. Very fast charging, nice ride, lovely space to be in, easy opening of boot with your foot, revolutionary idea of a speedo and map in front of you. Top down view when manoeuvring in tight spaces., Cnservativce estimates of battery charge at destination. Just works, and really well
The Auto Focus channel, fully shot on smartphones... tbh though the mirrorless (i think) camera is a nice bump in quality. I was confused by how good the zoom was until I saw the camera in the reflection.
Nice video! Looking forward to your future reviews of the Polestar 3 and/or Polestar 4. Both of those seem like a huge improvement over the Polestar 2.
The racing stripe just going down the roof is hilarious, with the gloss/matte black on the paint I was expecting the glass to be frosted, but nope just paint over half the glass roof 😅
I have a dual motor Polestar 2 that I’ve had since June 2022. When it arrived there was no CarPlay, that came later. I’m an iPhone guy, but like the Android that’s built in to the car. I agree with everything you say. You’d need to be nuts to buy a new BST. They depreciate so fast. Get a nearly new dual motor 400bhp car, then buy the power upgrade to take it to 470bhp. I really want a Taycan, and borrowed a 4S recently. It wasn’t different enough to justify the cost to change
Ok rn and when this was filmed though, I feel this is missing a big factor. The used market. Sure it is $70k all speced out not BST. But that 70k car with 30k miles is now $25k usd. $25k is the price of a chevy bolt at 30k miles. So this would have to be worse thana bolt right? That is my logic. So I bought a used one, I haven't taken delivery and am tomorrow. But I feel like It can't be chevy bolt euv bad. To be clear a chevy Bolt EUV is a great car, but it is designed to be cheap.
I am starting to think you are one of the best and easiest to listen to reviewers around thank you. I test drove a Polestar 2 with the Ohlins suspension. I couldn't believe how awful it was over bumps. Incredibly harsh. Didn't like the user interface and then that whole center console is a bad design. It isn't a good use of space and doesn't allow your knees enough room to open up. I actually like how it looks from the outside but that was it. A very flawed design imo and its sales numbers are not great.
@10:45 Marques, the column in the middel is the transmission shaft used for the ICE cars built on the same platform. It is only there because the Polestar 2, while nice in most respects, is not a real EV.
Last “back seat kinda small.” Yes. If you are 6’3”, and set front seat for yourself and have another 6’3” person in back, it’s tight. For us Mugsy Bogues as opposed to Shaq types, it works great. Get the performance/Plus/Pilot version, not the BST, and it’s the best EV at that price, IMHO.
