Lyrics:
Though I've tried before to tell her
Of the feelings I have for her in my heart
Every time that I come near her
I just lose my nerve as I've done from the start
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
I resolved to call her up
A thousand times a day
Ask her if she'll marry me
In some old fashioned way
But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Every little thing, every little thing
Every, every little thing
Every little, every little, every little
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
That she does is magic
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Every little thing
Every little thing
Every little thing, she does is magic, magic, magic
Magic, magic, magic
Ey oh, yo oh
Eee oh oh oh oh oh
Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet

I lived this song in the late 80s, I was love struck over my mom's hairdresser... fresh out of the Marines I would get a haircut every week weather I needed it or not. Finally worked up the courage to ask her out, she said not right now , but ask me again some time. My buddy knew about it, and he laughed at me.yeah, a good friend. I kept getting haircuts, and about a month later my friend Dianne , her coworker told me she had broke up with her guy... So I asked again. We dated three months, I proposed. We were married 3 months later. We're still married 33 years later.

Copeland just woke up groggy, half asleep and recorded the drum part and that's it, no grand design, no multiple takes about figuring out how to drum into the chorus, just woke up and did it and there's your song. Now millions of musicologists fritter and waste their time away on how Copeland spent days figuring out how to drum this song, just so, perfectly and precisely.

There was always an interesting tension between Sting’s romantic jazz sensibilities and Copeland’s desire for The Police to be a punk band. It leaves a lot of their songs with a slightly off-kilter, foreboding, edgy feel. Chromatic and almost discordant at times, a lot of sharps and flats. This is actually one of their few songs that is unambiguously happy and upbeat.

The contrast between the mysterious, minor 7 chord with shifting bass notes and the major chords that are the basis of the chorus, are always fascinating and pull the listener in. In a similar way to Mahler and the polarized emotional experience that he communicated, the song portrays the highs and lows of love. The steel drums playing in the ecstatic chorus were quite original in commercial pop music, when the song was written. The guitar, unusually takes a back-seat but the rhythmic, chugging chords and arpeggios later on are very attractive. The drumming in the chorus really emphasizes the ecstatic feel of the song and the addition of synth and piano expanded the usual timbres they deployed. A seminal song from the 1980's.

Scorpion's Is There Anybody There is indeed reggae rock as well, released in 1979. I am curious if they have other similar songs? The Police came out in 1978 - Outlandos d'Amour - their first album featuring reggae-beat rock songs. I wonder if that particular Scorpions' song was influenced by The Police, as have many musicians and bands since then (just check out Ride by Twenty One Pilots, Rude by Magic! and Locked Out of Heaven by Bruno Mars)
@2degucitas
@2degucitas 8 лет назад
+Jweeping Er The reggae sound was big in the UK before 1980. Many bands had two tone, ska and reggae influenced sounds prior to the Police. The Scorpions were riding a huge wave of reggae , not necessarily copying the Police.

This song is so beautiful it makes me wanna cry. It reminds me of the sweetest days of my life. When I was a baby and toddler in the late 80's I listened to sting and fleet wood mac and journey and all the greats. I never remembered the words cuz I was too little but the melodies never left my head. I slowly figured out the songs over time. They say little kids and babies cant remember anything. Its rare but you'd be surprised.

When "Ee-oh-oh" is the only part of this song you know for months and you have no idea how to search for it...

The interlude at 1:35 is so amazing. The orchestration between Sting's Vocals, Andy's Guitar and Stewart's Drums gives me the chills. I can listen to that over and over and over.....

For me, there's two points: 0:46 - 0:52 the turnaround, here, is beyond description. 2:56 - 2:58. Stewarts' drum fill just launches everything into a whole new level of energy. As (primarily) a drummer I've never, ever, ever lost the joy of this moment.

The outro does it for me. I mean, there are so many aspects of this song that are just sooooo good! But the outro.......just takes me to a different space. When he starts singing "it's a big enough umbrella" and the piano. It's almost like seeing and leaving a long lost friend.
