They’re up there, but I have Rush and ELP up there as well. They all have one thing in common as well, they all have bass playing singers and that, in my opinion, is the toughest gig to do in a band, Geddy is imo the best at it in terms of the complexity of some of his playing and the fact he’s also a beast on keyboards as well.

The brilliance of Stewart at the time is not just his amazing chops. The drum sounds of the 70s were heavily muffled and snares were de-tuned. It was called a "wet" sound. Listen to Heart of Glass by Blondie or many other disco tunes. Stuart took all the muffles off the toms to let them ring. He did the same with the snare and tightened the heads to almost breaking. This is why many of us still hold him in a hall of fame like status.

This is my favorite Police period (the first three albums). The last two albums when they became a supergroup lacked the raw power of their earlier work. This tune is a perfect example.
@TheWingus
@TheWingus 9 месяцев назад
Having been on a Police kick recently watching as many (earlier) live performances as I can find and some interviews; I think the reason they were unstoppable was because there were all S tier musicians but also weren’t hamstrung by trying to “play the record”. I just saw a drum interview with Stewart where he said something like “when you’re on stage playing live, fuck it do whatever you want”. You can really see that in these mid-late 70’s live recordings. I mean shit, Stewart is literally eating watermelon while playing in the last few minutes
@dancarter482
@dancarter482 19 дней назад
@@TheWingus Exactly - however Sting got all serious and wanted regimental discipline and was trying to dictate every note. When he presented new songs he already had all the beats laid out for Stewart to learn! Takes some balls to believe you can tame Stewart. They only made 3 good albums.

Stewart Copeland and Dave Grohl are the only two drummers I know that absolutely electrify the performance beyond what any other drummer could. There are other great drummers (Peart, Beaufort, Weckl, Colaiuta, etc.) but this guy is amazing in intensity and how he makes the entire band better. The Police would not have been nearly as good with any other drummer.

Myself personally playing in a police tribute band as a drummer and idolizing copeland i have graduated to appreciating Stings bass and singing at the same time. Us drummers are following the beat and this guy is laying it down , singing at at the same time, far more syncopated then us drummers....sorry

@ravenfn831
@ravenfn831 3 года назад
I both envy you and fear having to live up to those songs. I used to think bass was, BY FAR, the easiest instrument in a band. In reality, you have to compliment and enhance the beat and what the drummer is trying to do. Without a good foundation, a song will fail. On top of that, you need to compliment or add to the melody of the song. The bass guitar is so very complicated. It's a rabbit hole.
