The mocking is that he knows (Sting) that he'll die by the numbers. Remember The Police owned 1983. Grammys, Multi Million Selling Album. World Tour, MTV, everywhere! Their "initiation" was complete. If they hadn't put in "work" and appealed to such a large audience, (including myself...I was a BIG fan) that song would have never even been on that album. Believe That! Just like it was their time to blow up, it will be the same people who will decide (by the numbers) when they will exit....stage left!

Sting was one of, if not the best songwriter of his generation. He wrote about large complex issues that he framed in the context of a pop song and simplified ideas and concepts to make them comprehensible without dumbing down and oversimplifying. With the collective gifts of the Police, placed those ideas in a compelling musical context. Why are there so many comments about Sting's ego or any other great artist's ego for that matter?. The only people who are egoless are either mindless ciphers or fully Enlightened and I have never met anyone who was or is fully Enlightened. Ego and ambition drives accomplishment and only becomes a problem when it becomes so disproportionate to reality, that ego transforms into toxic narcissism. Public displays of humility are for people who know how to play the game and privately know who they are. Everyone who has accomplished something worthwhile and has a strong self is condemned by people with weak, unhealthy egos who have never risked failure to accomplish anything worthwhile.

@ericgendell8874
@ericgendell8874 8 лет назад
Wrong. Co-wrote. Sting wrote the lyrics.
@Threxx11
@Threxx11 8 лет назад
Eric Gendell The music is arguably far more involved than the lyrics, but regardless, The Police worked in an environment of clashing egos but Sting's was definitely the greatest by the time of their breakup. While they were able to produce great songs in their tense environment, it clearly did not lend itself to longevity. Being an arrogant asshole who wants to control the other members of the band is going to get you kicked out or the band is going to implode. While it can create great music it doesn't exactly work for proper relationships. (Even though by their own accounts, all 3 members are cool with each other outside of the studio.)
@ericgendell8874
@ericgendell8874 8 лет назад
I agree, the music is more involved than the lyrics, but the lyrics was what I was addressing. You may call sting an asshole, but besides being the driving force behind the band,the acknowledgement by countless musical greats who have honored him through the years renders your comment trivial and irrelevant. I can't remember where I found this quote, but:"Sometimes it takes an asshole to get things done"
@paulcavanagh1294
@paulcavanagh1294 7 лет назад
+Eric Gendell So what if Sting was an "arrogant asshole", as you say, he certainly could write a good song, the vast majority of the best Police songs and without that ability they would not have reached the heights they reached even with a good drummer or guitarist! And with regards to Copeland, on all the footage I've seen of him and in the things I've read, he was an absolute pain in the arse on a daily basis, typical over the top american, acting like a kid and if you're looking for arrogance, he had it in spades! Most people would have struggled being around Copeland and apparently Sting struggled getting new songs accepted by him, I mean FFS have you heard half the shite Copeland wrote?!

A Donald Trump presidency is the leftist's biggest nightmare. That HRC is a lying, duplicitous, ill-tempered, cold-as-ice political game player has long been established beyond discussion. She is a cynical battle-ax who will say anything, do anything, and be anything she thinks you want her to be in order to garner votes and fill the coffers of the Clinton Foundation. For anyone who want’s to know what Murder by Numbers is about, visit GematriaEffectNews here on youtube. Using Gematria, the ancient cabalistic method of coding numbers into letters, using the Simple English cipher (ABC=123 and so on, like the lyrics) Murder = 83, song released in 1983. And that’s not all, far from it. Learn the TRUTH. “Murder is the sport of the elected”.

One of the best lyrics ever put together to a song. Such a complex , turn-off topic and even this Sting managed to make elegant and even ironically funny so it’s funny. Andy put some dirty jazzy chords on the verse and it sets the mood too. If you can make a hit , quality song on such a disgusting subject there is nothing you can’t do lyrically and musically. I find this scary that people are so f🤬 hypnotized that they do not even discuss the lyrics talking about killings, but talk about how well the bass guitar is....wow, just wow!

A "Murder by Numbers" example: Prince wrote the song "I would die 4 U' U = 21. So you can say "I would die 4 21' Prince died on April/21 (4/21).

The back up singers are getting in his way during the chorus. I never thought they were needed on this tour. They do not add anything.

Agreed. For me the only song that benefited from back up singers was King Of Pain other than that they were unnecessary.

toward the end Sting did occasionally mock his audience in a very sublte way. Fame and adulation makes you cynical.

wow - never knew they played this live - it was a B side but probably the song that best represents the transition from police to sting solo. fantastic musicianship all round.

Stewart Copeland has said he'd been jamming playing the drum riff in the dining room of their recording studio in Montserrat when Andy joined in with his guitar and Sting began singing along with lyrics he'd already written. They then went into the studio to record what they'd put together with the first take being what appears on the B-side of Every Breath You Take.

What ruined the police on the ghost tour and this one,, was the trump[et sections and back up singers.. they should have never done that. the studio version is better..

I know today's music sucks but there still is good music. Just because its not overplayed on the radio doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Its called Indie Music. I also understand that there was shitty music in 1983 too. Nobody liked it, therefore it was forgotten. The Police are an awesome band.This is a great song. Therefore, it was remembered. All this generation needs is a music revolution. It happened in the 90's when it was necessary. I guarantee that there will be one in the next 10 years.
