@@highwayman1218 if you’re curious, I’ve got Outlandos at 4. Most of the record is great, but I don’t like be my girl Sally or peanuts. Laat is Regatta de Blanc not because I don’t like it but because when you have five amazing albums something has to be the least good
There are sooooo many incredible Police tunes. King of Pain, So Lonely, Can’t Stand Losing, Don’t Stand So Close To Me, Roxanne, Canary In a Coal Mine, Synchronicity… there are truly many, many more not listed here that are more than worth your time. They have such a unique sound and are still incredibly talented artists. Definitely an all time favourite and always a feature in my playlists.
J, you'll love their"Walking On The Moon", "Spirits In The Material World" and "Synchronicity II" I Saw them in concert April 1982, what a great show!!
"I will turn your face to alabaster" - I've been waiting nearly 40 years to use that line on someone. Haven't found the opportunity yet but one day, one day. Great reaction to such a powerful, erudite song.
I've always loved this song, but it also has a meaning behind it too. Sting was a teacher before his music career, so he incorporated things into his songs. The verse cought between the Scylla & Charybdis were mythical sea creatures, in the verse Mephistopheles is not your name, I know what you're up to just the same. He's calling someone or something as cunning as the devil. It could be a song about a sneaky controlling person, or a bad habit, but in the end, he says the person's face will turn to alabaster, when you find your servent is your master. He used his expertise in English and literature to teach a story, that what you are controlled by you can overcome and control it.
Excellent. Have we ever heard from any of his students? "I was drawing this picture of this lady, and I took it up to Mr Sumner and he said, that's excellent, Timmy, now what colour is her face, and I said, it's white, Mr Sumner, and he said alabaster, Timmy, it's alabaster."
I've always imagined this as sort of an apprentices tale. Something like Harry Potter learning from his teachers and then taking over the school. He went to learn things he couldn't learn in college like magic. Loved this song for 30+ years...Listened to the BSide of synchronicity every night for many months.
Sting was going through a divorce at the time. He wrote this song, Every Breath You Take, and King of Pain about different ways his divorce made him feel. Funny enough, those three tracks are all in sequence on the Synchronicity album, almost like you can hear his descent into madness
Yea ya know BAND OF GOLD……wrapped around your finger……it’s about MARRIAGE. And a VERY BAD ONE. Kinda obvious dear. You didn’t even mention THAT clue 🙄😂🤣
@@SoundlabStudios63 ummmm NOPE Every Breath You Take was about A STALKER! Can’t you read the lyrics? That ain’t love. NOT about that divorce. THIS song was about his divorce.
My favorite songs from them is Everything She Does is Magic, Roxanne, Message In A Bottle, Spirits In A Material World, Synchronicity 1 & 2. There's so many great ones you really can't go wrong. Sting also did outstanding solo work.
This song is about a young guy seduced by a married woman but once he's learnt everything from her, he's the one who now has her wrapped around his finger. Brilliant storytelling as always from him! I would love u to react to Russians by Sting as it's unfortunately very relevant again.
Stewart Copeland is an amazing drummer/percussionist as well as musician and composer. There is a video of this song live where the camera is solely on him! Simply amazing. Not to mention videos of the band in Africa in the 80’s and Stewart is in a chain link fence cage playing with lions watching him. Incredible!
Your ear misses nothing, Jay! You nailed it when you mentioned the Reggae sound. The Police were heavily influenced by Reggae, Jazz, & Punk - which you can definitely hear in their music. Under the genre "Reggae Rock" - The Police are always at the top of the list. ❤️✌️🎵
Literally and I mean literally, my morning alarm clock!! Edit: Jay just grab The Polices Greatest Hits. That still has plenty great tracks off it! COPELAND is still one of favourite drummers of all time!!
An absolute classic track, sting is and will always be one of the greatest songwriters of our time, saw them live in the early eighties and they absolutely brilliant.
One of the greatest English band,This song came out around Christmas time excellent timing candles back ground. 👌O I forgot try the others hit (Don't stand to close to me )
When I first heard this song I kind of envisioned this young guy who was a sorcerer's apprentice. The sorcerer used him for menial labor and didn't really want to teach him serious magic but would teach him enough to pull him along. The young apprentice studied on his on and would secretly read the books of the sorcerer and would practice at night time on his own. Eventually he learned a spell to overpower the sorcerer and take his power from him. That is the story I envisioned when listening to this song. :) Not sure that is what Sting envisioned but that is what my mind saw.
I love the Police, I love Sting, and I love this song! Check out more of their music and some of Sting’s solo hits like, We’ll Be Together, Russians, Fragile, Fields of Gold, Englishman in New York, and more! ❤️❤️
I have always seen this as a fantasy magician training thing. The pupil is first slaved by the master. But then finally he becomes more powerful and the master becomes the servant. :)
Ever since first seeing Police live at the Horseshoe in Toronto just after Halloween in 78, I've been a fan. I have since been to concerts in New York, Amsterdam, and most recently in 2008 in Macau. The group definitely ranks amongst my Top 10 who played during my lifetime.
Slow and steady? I got you. Pull up to 2 of their best vibes. 1) Voices 2) Walking on the Moon. Big “J” The Police were the biggest band on the planet when they called it a day. Go figure? More please. 🤘😎
Yap, the Police put the icing on the cake with this one. I did not completely understand this fully as an 80's teen, but I apricate this kind of music more now. I always wonder how long it took them to light all those candles. And, were they afraid of starting a fire.
This is a beautiful song about wishing to possess the beloved, represented in tbe imagery of a ring that binds one around another's finger. In the last verse, Sting is describing a kind of magic spell that reverses the balance of power. "I will turn your face to alabaster...when you find your servant is your master.." "-YOU'LL be wrapoed around MY finger..." I noticed that throughout the song there are references to magic, casting spells, etc. 'Mephistophiles" is of course, the elusuve demon that advised FAUST. The scene at the end of the video where he topples all of candles , made me think of Prospero burning all of his books and throwing them into the sea...
The Police are 🔥 one of my fav bands! A few songs you haven't reacted to yet: -"Synchronicity II" 🔥🔥🔥 -"Bring On The Night" -"Spirits In The Material World" -"When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around"
this might be my fav of their 80's stuff at least as far as standing up so well now, and still sounding very fresh. always sounds amazing in the car, specially with those super raw 'Neil Peart'-y drums...and you gotta love those lyrics, surely a Sting best-of on the lyrics alone.
It's about sex, Jayvee. He starts seeing a married woman who can 'teach' him stuff he can't learn in college. At first, she has power over him because he is inexperienced. Eventually, he learns how to please her and takes control of the situation. That is when the rolls are reversed and she is wrapped around his finger.
Also check out Sting's incredible solo career. Start with An Englishman in NY w/Branford Marsalis on sax. Great albums include Ten Summoner's Tales, Soul Cages.
I saw them back in ‘83 when they toured this album, Synchronicity. Didn’t really consider myself a fan but went with a date. They were amazing!! Still have the image in my mind of Sting dancing around in an incredible multi-colored coat. Needless to say, I became a huge fan just a little too late because this was their final record together as a band. 😕 BTW, UB40 opened the show and killed it! Red Red Wine!! ♥️♥️
Hey Jay! This song holds a lot of wonderful memories for me in the 80s😊. The Police have a distinct sound and whatever song you listen to captures your attention. Love all their hits ❤ thanks for your reaction!
I was only a wee lad in the ‘80s, not of a concert-going age. One of my biggest regrets in life was not being able to catch them later on their reunion tour in 2008. I just couldn’t afford the $400 tix at the time. Now that I’m better off, I would gladly pay $4,000 to see them live. Sadly, I don’t think they’ll ever do it again. But one can hope. I got one finger wrapped around the other finger 🤞
I really felt that I watched my music back then. This video mesmerized me as a kid. This was my RU-vid kids. 😜 Gave me angst about causing a fire 🔥. That being said this video is 🔥 🔥🔥😂
Love the bass on this track..... Whole track is great,, but from the "Devil and the deep blue sea" chorus and on..... Damn.... Synchronicity has so many good ones.... Ghost in the machine close.... ZMD right after.... Good job checking it out. 👍👍
Rufus Wainwright covered this for Sting's birthday. His version is sublime, you should check it out. It's actually my favorite version of the song lol, and I say this as a fan of The Police since I was 12.
Yes, voted for this! Thanks for reacting to it.. and very impt that you viewed the official music video. It just adds to the haunting beauty of this track, and appreciate this work more.. back in the 80s as a kid when this came out, I was fascinated by how Sting sings along the same time while in slow motion.
A wonderful version of this song is sung by Rufus Wainwright. At a celebration for Sting (I guess a birthday) Sting had all these other artists on stage to sing his songs.. and Rufus really did a great job.
it doesn't matter if you listen to The Police or Sting solo. It is always 100% Sting , with all his curiosity for new sounds, his musical genius and his enormous talent. And that for 50 years now on a level that only a few reach.
Hi Javon! Sting has such an amazing voice. Did you know he sung the backing vocals for Dire Straits - Money for Nothing? An amazing track on its own but it excels with Stings voice added for sure. Fields of Gold is just beautiful by Sting on his own. Check it out 👍🏻🎼🎼
one of my favorite songs if all time! it makes me so happy and motivated to do better in life so i can listen again in the future in a better part of my life lol
Dont Stand by Me and Roxamme are other great songs from The Police. I love this one too, and like you I find it relaxing music and Stings voice blends in with it so well. They were great musically, there seemed to be great thought about mixing the instruments and the voice together that made each record special in my opinion. Now its 1am so goodnight everyone God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK
I love this from the police. The slow start, then kicking into the chorus then back to slow again. Walking on the Moon is one you've got check out too Jay.👍📀🎶❤️
My best, worst joke. "When Sting retires, you think they'll call him Stung?" In all seriousness, I love The Police. I need to own more of their work! So many great songs I know I haven't even heard yet. EDIT: I have to elaborate, because just listening to this song again...the spooky synths that ring out, that echoing watery chord, that strategic percussion. The way it all culminates and crescendos into the chorus...It gives me goosebumps. And Sting's vocals here are fantastic.
Sting is a poetic musical genius, love this song but my favourite would have to be "spirits in the material world", a pure masterpiece & classic, hint hint Jay. God bless from Australia.
Devil and the deep blue sea behind me Vanish in the air you'll never find me I will turn your face to alabaster When you'll find your servant is your master You'll be wrapped around my finger You'll be wrapped around my finger You'll be wrapped around my finger My Favorite part of the song. Glad U enjoyed it Jayvee.
Is this a fan's common insider knowledge? Of this I never heard before in my life, but back in the day, I was just close to being a true fan after all. Brilliant song, truly one of their greatest imo. Also the rest of their catalogue isn't even worse.
