As an African American man with daughters, I love this. I want my daughters to love and respect themselves for the way God made them. Like flowers, all women add to the beauty in this world.

@49jubilee What in the world are you talking about? I can care less what White men are finding acceptable. I'm interested in what my beautiful black women think of themselves, not what white men are thinking. They have been the main haters of my beautiful sisters. As for as you other comment, "unlike black men who had peer pressure into the black community to marry lighter with 'good hair'" take that crap out of here.

@@Natalia-hf3et although it is wrong. i think that happens naturally. white women don't care about the details of our hair. they may accept or reject a person based on hair but truly they have no interest. thus, it is natural that most of the opinions come from those who care... other black women

They MAY have been doing it in a "family" , constructive way--as my Mom used to do when I (jokingly) said "sammich" instead of "sandwich"--in order to communicate that, what's ok around family may NOT be ok when you're out among whites.. they'll judge you, because they don't know you or love you as we do. That's PART of why we do it. But it must be as hurtful as when family fat-shames or otherwise attempts to curtail anything against norms of predominant culture: THEY will judge you, so let me VERBALLY "hurt" you with "tough love" first.. so you can make a change or adapt before the dominant culture REALLY hurts you in actual & material ways: deny you a job or promotion, or a loan, or other advancement.

I have locs. I have been locked for 18 years. One of the reasons I think people choose to find help about natural hair on the blogs and on RU-vid is because, they may not enjoy going to the salons. I hate sitting in a salon. My experience with salons is I'm in there all day due to many different issues or situations and none of those situations have to do with me. I went to a salon to start my locs and the professional told me that her clientele pretty much fills up her schedule. She told me she would teach me how to take care of my locs if that is what I wanted. She fit me in for 2 return visits and that was it. She made it clear that her long-term clients come first. I have been taking care of my locs ever since. I feel everyone should know or learn how to do their natural hair, and if you need a trim then go to the professionals.

More professional hairstylis in cities all over the world that have the curly girl methods and natural hair products (used and practiced in salons that are very skilled in caring for 4abc type hair) should advertise and become professional hairstylist online bloggers, and market their excellence and branding. This will help the brick and morter black hair salons locations to have more prominence in society.

The first panelist Anne Marie Butler has it spot on correct when she noted by a quote, that "Blacks are judged on their hair by both Whites AND Blacks...long straight hair people are more favorable, and the shorter, kinkier, and nappier the hair is, the less favorable it is. "

Listen to the intro. All 3 students are studying and researching different aspects of the oppression of people of color (more specifically, women of color). That they participated in a symposium titled "The Politics of Black Women's Hair" isn't menial in at all. They all use the topic to find a segue into their respective fields of study. And they don't have to marginalize their own day-to-day experiences with oppression to give other black people's experiences of oppression real meaning.

when they change their formulas or advertising strategies leaving their original customers behind it creates a sense of abandonment and betrayal. I have never bought from Miss Jessie's because I have always felt the ingredients used don't justify the price. And it was unfortunate but not surprising that a black male was behind the Carol's Daughter advertising campaign that viewed multi racial beauty as aspirational while leaving other visions of beauty behind. What is most problematic as that...

58:48 As an African American longtime hairstylist (37 years in the business) I have been following the restorative (curly) movement sometime and my answer to this question is that it is time for us as the beauty industry to evolve as an industry or yes the blogger will be the new stylist. One thing not addressed is the emotional implications of the client choosing restorative beauty as opposed to conformity at any cost and we have an obligation as new studies show hair AND skin care has long been a sacrificial process. We need to disrupt the industry in a new regenerative way to evolve our sense of self respect . As our clients honor rather than beat their hair into submission a new beauty emerges , and we as an industry need to support this new paradigm or be left behind.

If you are speaking from personal experience, I can respect your opinion. However, that's not been my experience. And I know other black women who don't hate their hair either; they do, however, grapple with how they are treated because they wear a natural style. That's the disturbing part of your generalizations about black women and how they should think or act. It's the same dismissive tone that some of us experience from people of other races. You don't own their feelings OR their hair.

Just my perspective, but, I found the salon owners stating that we needed them about as offensive as someone stating that I "need a perm" or "need" anything else for my appearance. I enjoy doing my own hair, and I am offended by the assertion that I need paid help.

I can tell one hell of a story about the politics of hair. I am half Israeli - of Algerian descent - half German/Asian, and by Israeli standards, I am a light Mizrachi (= person of Middle Eastern descent). Many even think I am white, because many European Jewish women wear artificial curls in order to look less white and more Middle Eastern. But to Germans, I am black and nothing else. I can't convey it to Israelis. They think I am crazy.

Why does hair have to be political? Could it just be about loving yourself without trying to send some kind of message? Being a light skinned black woman and a Muslim, I know multiple sides to the same story. When people see me, they are a bit confused about my race. My wider nose should giveaway my race, my hijab(head scarf) to them signifies that I might be foreign, and skin color can belong to many ethnicities. Under my hijab I have been rocking braids, hot combed hair, or pony tails my whole life. I am not trying to make my hair a political statement. I love my natural hair for the same reasons I love my skin color, because God gave it to me and it's nothing wrong with it. I think that things like hair should not be used to set a political statement first, but needs to be a part of a person loving themselves first. Yes, it leads to a political situation because it's different and its saying to the white world that we refuse to blend in. I also love how everyone that is not white is joining the natural movement for the very reasons why it has become big. Being natural could apply to any race, but I love how the minorities are starting to really accept themselves in their natural state.
@lovelight4388
@lovelight4388 10 лет назад
Absolutely everything has political implications if not political intrinsically. The fact that your hair is covered in hijab is political profoundly. Consider that there is the high fashion of simulating an over large bun underneath the hijab. What does that tell you as a Black Muslim woman?
@YurrahAlHadi
@YurrahAlHadi 10 лет назад
Love Light My hair being covered is not a political statement. I am wearing it for God, not government, nor am I trying to send some kind of political statement by wearing it.
@lovelight4388
@lovelight4388 10 лет назад
Yurrah Al-Hadi Actions for a God is the ultimate politic. You probably have the freedom to wear or not to wear. However most of hijab wearing is enforced by men and not God.
@YurrahAlHadi
@YurrahAlHadi 10 лет назад
Love Light Me worshiping God is not a political statement. I do not see why the two has to in opposition. Are you a Muslim? God tells the believing MEN and women to guard their modesty. Muslim men and women both have to wear hijab. The vast majority of Muslims, women as well, choose to wear hijab. No one is forcing us. There is not compulsion in Islam. To be a Muslim you have to peacefully submit to the will of God, not men. Enforcement only occurs if the person does not want to, the vast majority of us wants to wear hijab because it pleases God. Please do not stereotype all Muslims or generalize. Islam is not an oppressive religion and if a Muslim is being oppressive it is of his/her on accord. Obviously God is not going to force you to do any thing; hence, peaceful surrendering/submission to him. The majority of Muslim men do not force Muslim to wear hijab.
@lovelight4388
@lovelight4388 10 лет назад
Yurrah Al-Hadi You're confusing statement with actions. I have studied Islam from inside and out. I distinguish Islam from Muslims. I do not subscribe to Islam whatsoever. Your understanding of Islam is predicated on your geographical location and the present non domination of Islam/Sharia. Islam and Sharia are ultimately inseparable.

This is a great series. I appreciate the hair care professionals input but I hear a certain amount of arrogance in their statements. They should consider some of the reasons why a vast number of women are glad they don't have to walk in a salon again. Reasons range from high prices, being made to feel ashamed of their natural hair and absolute horror stories of stylists secretly relaxing natural clients hair. About product lines and loyalty. Black women do become loyal to certain brands and...

She is supporting the Black Natural Hair by acknowledging the problems between WHITE SUPREMACY and black inferiority through hair and beauty standards. In order to get this society moving to a positive direction we need to be able to look at these problems together, because it's not for Black People to say "Hey there's racism," while White People are denying it or not aware of it. It is for them to see it, call it out, and help fix it. They have the bulk of the power and influence by more than 90%; So whether we like it or not it's going to take all of us working together to change it. We should all be able to talk about hair like it's just hair and not something that some of us have to be ashamed of because of a vicious society.
