The images here are just scans from the book, which really doesn't do it justice at all. So I highly recommended you get a copy of The Pond - A book of 52 photographs by John Gossage, published by Aperture Books : aperture.org/s...

Great film and commentary. I very much "get" these types of photos. In fact, I live in Maryland, outside of D.C. and love to go on hikes of local trails and paths just like the ones photographed by Gossage. I've probably been to at least one of those same places. The area's full of them. I think of them as "places where God lives, but people wouldn't expect Him to". These places, to me, in the grand scheme of things, have just as much meaning and significance as the places people flock to. I think it a gift to be able to find wealth where others think there is none.

Really appreciate you sharing the work here. It’s a book I’ve been wanting for awhile now. Loved your words and thoughts shared too.

like the work of William Eggleston, one of the attractions of The Pond is its compositional elements in harmony within a frame. there is always a center, with elements balanced (not usually symmetrically) around it. this also is something "hiding in plain sight," which i believe adds immensely to the appeal of these photographs. great video, as all of yours are

Thank you for this….. I can't get enough of these images, and those of Robert Adams, among others, and your words go to the very core of what I love about photography.

Another enjoyable film Justin. The tension between what’s art to some and the emperors new clothes to others. Thanks again. Martin.

Thank you Martin.

It sometimes seems that the "Emperors new clothes" is to photography discussions, as Godwin's Law is to political discussion. Especially amongst discussions with hobbyist photographers.

I like these photos. Makes you feel calm and relaxed. Also feels like you’re standing right there in the middle. Colour photos don’t do that. Great video

Thank you for another excellent video presentation. Still life is my favorite channel on RU-vid. Now, I will be picking out my well used paper copy of The Pond from the book shelf and enjoy it again.

Lovely video, lovely book and your summary of the value of this work was very nicely summed up. There is not enough derisive criticism directed toward the amount of lacklustre photography being pedalled in the realms of social media nowadays - it should be discussed more openly. I have subscribed and hope you come back with more videos in the future!

Thank you so much for your series of videos -- I've been looking for stuff like this on RU-vid and I'm so happy you're creating it. I hope you have more in the works. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Stephen Gill's work

I am glad to have found your page. Being a commercial/editorial photographer, it's easy to learn the craft and make beautiful pictures. John Gossage's The POND leads me to question what's good photography? Why? Thank you for your analysis and will continue to search for its meaning.

I’m puzzled that this video skips so many of the photos. The pacing of the full sequence, slowly approaching the pond and then exploring its surroundings, is the deep music of this book. The photos are nicely captured. How about an unabridged version?

Fair point, I wasn't trying to give a full detailed analysis of The Pond, merely an introduction to Gossage, who I don't think is hugely known, and why I admire this type of 'intimate' landscape photography exemplified by The Pond. As always I would rather I gave a broad overview and the viewer can then go on to do their own research on the subject.

Still Life - Art and the photographic image I agree with the value of the extended sampler, for one or two photos from this work are, if viewed out of context, are simply baffling. But if you captured all the photos, why not add The Pond - Unabridged? It would do the work full credit.

if commercial aspirations in photography are not to be considered 'bad', perhaps utilizing the word 'hack' to describe any such photographer is a touch disingenuous? Otherwise, thanks for the vid!

10 of these images are great, 10 of them are good, the rest is worthless in my book.
