Thanks for sharing! I’m interested in learning to play. Do you know where I could order an inexpensive version of this kind of Pontian Lyra that ships to the U.S.? Thanks!
It depends what type of instrument you have. Is it a zil, zilo-gapano or a gapan? Is it a Greek or Turkish instrument? Some of the Greek-type narrower instruements (zil kemenche) which sound high pitched, need EAD violin strings, where E is the zil, A is middle and D is gapan.
@@kemenchebasics i have a zil and a kapan..on my kapan i have 0.014-g24-g24. Daddario guitar string 0.014 and two galli g24 la strings. The same combination on zil is not good for the sound. I dont know wich combi i must have on zil
@@_Sokarbank_ I've just made this video on selecting a zil string for a zil instrument: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KbnsruNjr-A.html
that's completely true the reason i do this is because i travel a lot with the instrument and i can't carry proper tools all the time so i don't want to stand for any surprises on this topic haha
@@קיילירוזנברג-נ5ל I just saw this comment. Did you get it out? You need to tip the instrument upside down and manouvre the sound post on top of one of the 2 large sound holes. A long metal object such as a knife is then used to slide it through the sound hole as it usually needs some help.
I get my instruments from Turkey. Very good quality and extremely affordable. If you Google "ποντιακος συλλογος αθηνα" you should be able to find a Pontic club in Athens that may be able to direct you to a seller. Pontiakos Syllogos Argonaftai Komninoi I believe are the biggest Pontic club in Athens.
great video i liked but can you tell me what am i doing wrong i bought Kemence from Thomann website but whenever i stroke the strings with the bow literally no sound what so ever happens i tried to tune the strings and continued testing nothing no sound maybe i forgot to add that ros whatever its called the glue thing to my bow?
Hi. Check to see if the sound post is in place. If it was dislodged, the Kemenche will make no sound whatsoever. Shake the instrument. If you can hear the sound post rattling inside, it needs to be reinstalled. Let me know. I have a video which shows you how to fix it. Otherwise, the bow hairs need rosin.
@@kemenchebasics I have the same problem, but when I switch to a violin bow it works well, so it is a problem with the lyra bow. Is there a technique or something with the bow to tighten it or something because I'm not getting any sound?
@@leopoldzoupounidis571 it could be a few things. Does the bow have rosin applied to it? Does the bow hair look like fishing line? (Some luthiers supply very poor quality bows). Are you holding it correctly? It's not held like a violin bow. 3 of your fingers need to create tension to the hairs.
Thanks for this video. You already gave me some tips. I'm starting now my first experience with kemence. I have a first basic quesrtion: about how to press the strings with the fingertips (as in guitar) or with the top of the nails (I was watching a video of a turkish woman and she said that she use nails)? Can you clarify it? Thanks again
Hi Stefano. The Kemenche is played with the soft part of the finger, similar to playing a guitar, not the fingernail. The Cretan Lyra however, is played with the fingernail.
