This isn't meant to make fun of anyone or be mean, there's nothing wrong with anything I mention, I'm just listing stuff that blew my mind coming from a working-class area x

I'm an exchange student in Durham right now and I am so surprised how stuck up some students are! Got called a poor (as in broke) American (I'm Canadian too) in a lecture because I didn't have a laptop in my lecture (because it was at home charging because I forgot to charge it the night before)

I used to know someone at uni who went to stay with his relatives in their family estate on some weekends. There were stories of pheasant shooting, horse riding, and lots of traditional dancing. Their staff were posher than me.

The best thing I heard In freshers was “I went to the same grammar school as Prince George and my cousin is in the year above him and apparently he goes around telling kids his grandma is going to behead them.” And when we had to go house hunting people said “ well ring your parents tomorrow and ask them for a budget” .... excuse me Im fully funded by SLC 😂😂. Once at a formal a boy boasted how “ he spoke the queen’s English and I don’t because I speak dialect and it’s not correct “ .... I’m from Durham btw (I’m a local ) and so I told him to “stop being such a snob, this is my home turf and I’ll speak now I like , you are actually the one not speaking correctly in my area so shut up “ 😂😂. Got some strange looks at the dining table but hey ho . I was lucky with my corridor the majority are working class and the ones who aren’t are very generous with paying for things when others can’t afford them (like one of my friends was literally going to help us with rent at one point so we could secure a nice house which I had to turn down as I felt awful but he is the sweetest soul I’ve ever met) and the wealthy people are so left wing that I can have a decent conversation with them . Overall they widened my horizons and we have holidays etc planned and I widened theirs by telling them my working class experiences. So overall found it positive . But some days I got really down about it but that’s something you have to deal with and laugh about in the Future 😂. Loved this vid btw and plz analyse the Durfess posts ive seen some rank ones on there 😂xx

Stumbled upon this my accident. My eldest considering Durham as we live here & her Dad read his 1st degree there. I would strongly recommend you visit Beamish Museum when it is able to reopen. (Including the Masonic Hall). To me University was about gaining independence not having cleaners & cooks! Some of your posh peers are clearly not independent. My children (secondary age) too frequently have to show students how to use the self-scan in Tescos: too posh to shop???? Enjoy your time in this beautiful city.

I am an Indian Student and received an offer for Law, September 2021 intake, would you say that it is inclusive for students like us, frankly speaking I would consider myself to be privileged financially but that something that has been pretty insignificant for almost all of my life, be able to fit in considering a different nationality and what not?
@TheOrdinaryAdventurers
@TheOrdinaryAdventurers 3 года назад
I definitely think you’ll still fit in just fine, there is a huge international cohort at Durham, basically a third of the uni are international, so this shouldn’t hold you back at all. Obviously there’s always bad people that bring the name down, but in general the majority of students will be accepting towards you. I’d recommend joining the International Society (not sure that’s the official name) but it’s really good for helping international students, I actually attended one of their events once and it was really fun, they were teaching all about different cultures which gave people from outside the UK the opportunity to show off their own country. I hope that’s helpful and good luck with whatever you choose ☺️

Hi Megan, A word of advice - these creatures that garner the 'posh' appendage. They have nothing whatsoever to do with the largely anachronistic former delineations of 'class' that have now all but dissolved into the vulgar and ultimately crass display of wealth that you speak of. I come from an old 'family estate' background originally and my grandfather would never consider driving the Bentley around the village to display any wealth - this would have been seen, quite rightly, as vulgar and simply 'wrong'. Everyday life was conducted in good serviceable clothing and a good little car (old seventies mini clubman - a humble car that served it's purpose. The Bentley would be used when occasion demanded). Real class does not need to shout about itself. The people you have encountered are the naive and spoiled offspring of what we would call 'new money' and even if some have a pretence to anything else; that world has been eroded to the point where it apes the vulgar USA with it's bling, flash and 'willy waving' weak ego antics (academically 'the ability to display the signifier of the phallus' - look it up!) replacing, charm, manners, wit, good taste, intelligence and of course education. On this last point - this is why you are at Uni - do not waste time in thrall or obsequiousness to these foppish twerps. Your humble values seem far more convincing of 'class' than what you report from the over monied 'oiks' you are advertising. You will find that - scratch the veneer and these people are extremely insecure and unfulfilled in life. Go ahead and seek out the Real people (poor, rich or in-between) who are are always there, aloof and impervious to the noisy but ultimately vacuous nonsense that surrounds them. These may become your friends for life. The other sort do not really have friends, they have been bought up in sociopathic institutions that make such a thing difficult for them. They will waste your time. Good luck.

@@mariamelkholy8567 Thanks Mariam - I hope it does not fall on deaf ears. I did not wish to appear 'stuck up' myself, here. My real message is that we have said goodbye to a time when people with money and therefore leisure aspired to something greater than the sum of their bank accounts. I believe that this is a shame. Decent people who still seek to transcend their mortal and material states and explore towards 'something better' do still exist. We must stop reifying these nasty, tasteless thugs of the corporate, financial and political sectors and call them out for the vulgarities they truly are. Thus their disgraceful and infantile grandiosity ceases to remain fashionable, as I'm afraid may currently be the case. Good luck to you and if you are at the university, please remember the power of laughter and the story of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. Watch how dysregulated these charmless creatures become when their edifice is cracked by a little truth and a little wit. Be careful though, they can be 'vicious' in the broadest sense. It is also worth remembering that these are still young people and whilst their brutal 'habitus' (c.f Bourdieu) has been quite intentionally imprinted on their personalities (such as they are) - now is their best chance to shed their shackles and become more fully human. See if you can help them along but beware any feigning of decency as quick seduction!

@@paramidge8935 we should form a cult to make the world better, pal. Is it rude if I ask what do you study or your major? I love how articulate you are! I love English literature and was thinking of applying to Durham, but the appearances look terrifying and overwhelming.

@@mariamelkholy8567 Hi Mariam, I studied Drama and film at undergraduate and then a Performance studies masters degree at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. This was many years ago. My son may be at Durham studying music next year. We visited recently - nothing terrifying at all - friendly staff and the students who were conducting tours were good people. He fancies Cambridge as well but to be frank I would be happy if Durham is the final choice. The collegiate system appeals to him and I think that if you sharpen your elbows but only use them where and when required, relying rather on charm and genuine interest in others, you will be fine. Discourse skills are the paramount skills to hone whilst at University, so make sure that you will have access to plenty of 1:1 mentor time wherever you decide to go. This is partially dependent on making yourself interesting, intellectually, to a tutor who is still awake - I am sure that you will succeed in this, however. No short cuts and tell your truth. Good luck. PS A 'cult' is not required to maintain civilisation (though one sometimes desires the 'ready made' camaraderie) - a sense of responsibility and the ability to communicate with and inspire others absolutely is. Be a writer and encourage the world. Courage is the key.

@TheOrdinaryAdventurers
@TheOrdinaryAdventurers 3 года назад
In terms of international students, I think about a third of Durham students are international so you’ll be well accepted and included. For POC students, the overall uni treat them well, but like everywhere there’s a few small-minded rogues around but unfortunately you’d find that anywhere but the majority of the student body are actively not racist and you should focus on finding them and the right crowd to suit you and ignoring the rest. I won’t lie, POC students are hugely under-represented, which although daunting, this should be more of a push for you to come to Durham not a turn off. The biggest issue is probably representation and overall diversity and that can’t improve unless those students come to the uni, so I’d say just take it in your stride and be part of the change (if you’re comfortable obviously) xx
