The positives of being autistic and ADHD;
Often the focus is on the negatives of neurodivergent minds. So I wanted to make this video a celebration of the positives and strengths that I have because of my neurodivergence.

This was super helpful. I’m in my late 50s. I grew up in an isolated fundamentalist religious community, so I was mostly just punished for my autistic traits. I carried around a lot of anger, but now I’m thinking I will try to turn my experience into empathy instead. Well done!

I’m autistic, and memory (absorbing and retaining facts), and being analytical (breaking things down into detail) are my superpowers.

Beautiful video. Wow, I had a similar breakthrough yesterday. It was about purposely being positive rather than constantly revert to my usual negative/ beating myself up mind set. I'm thinking more curiosity and self compassion can bring more spontaneous joy. Basically, being childlike, We don't need to grow up too fast. Heck, I'm only 59 (in May)

i got diagnosed with autism 3 days ago with 25 (and 2 months ago with adhd) and it made me question every social skill that i ever gained and used my whole life. I'm a social worker and I'm so very capable of being compassionate and read people and understand social contexts and I'm funny and all those things, and i just thought for a moment, that all of this is somehow not real or just masking or fake, bevause i know now that i am autistic. It calms me so much to hear and understand emotionally that those fears are not based on facts, but hurtful stereotypes and stigma on autistic people. I love how you own who you are and these videos are so so important and empowering and such a great ressource, other than the pathologizing "information videos" from doctors and psychiatrists who say we are not compassionate and should work in IT. I am legitimately just so thankful a fellow frined with AuDHD recommended your channel. Thank you so much for your work!

I'm honestly starting to believe that ASD is somewhat of an evolutionary advantage, if it wasn't for the social traumas and social deficits, it would be a superpower.

Same, same! Unmasking does end up helping with releasing the humor, too. Even when the play on words made might seem dark to some people who miss some of the joy release in it. Helping others is how we are made - which also includes neurotypicals, that much is nearly universal. I have found that I can help others and avoid avoiding my own stuff in that helping others MAY give the brain a rest from overthinking. Instead of hurtful avoidance, I avoid the OCD of thirty variations on my stuff every moment. Brain rest from that part allows to hyper creative to escape and do good. To say it weirdly. [PS my diagnosis for years was "you are weird," and so noticed that "weird is wired differently" (spelled). Thanks for this. May you recall this joy time next time you struggle and so grow even stronger!!!

Unmasking is always nervy the more I get used to it because I have, without fail, been asked what I’m doing or why I’m doing something every time. But there is a lot of joy and general pleasantry that comes with doing it! Turns out I happy-bounce whenever I eat something really good. The few times I’ve done it in front of people I mostly trust with my audhd, their reaction was to ask but then get joyful with me. It was almost confusing but mostly really relaxing and exciting to eat things I love and fully experience that instead of masking it. 😊

I really appreciated you sharing your joy! But I'm curious, what's your happy stimming? 😍 I usually clap my hands, but like a pretty tense clap where the bottom of my palms are "attached" during the entire period of clapping, if that makes sense. 😅 I think I also have some body movements and sound that would like to come out but due to a lifetime of masking I don't even know my own stims. I'm really looking forward to seeing you stim more, your a great inspiration in so many ways! It's beautiful, you're beautiful, we're all beautiful! ❤

Hi Ella! I am so glad that you have found these solutions. I have been listening to ADHD 2.0 on audible (Edward hallowell & John J Ratey) and I have found it to be very helpful. He talks about ADHD from a neuroscience perspective in a very clean and digestible format. Thanks to it, I now have a special interest about the 2 neural networks TPM (found to be more prevalent amongst neurotypicals) and DMN (found to be more active amongst neurodivergents). I feel, this knowledge and much more that they talk about in the audio book, is crucial for me to harness and also helps me calm down when things get out of hand.

I absolutely love this video! I'm so glad you're starting to feel more positive about yourself. Right now I'm going through the same struggle you described: beating myself up and not feeling good enough; focusing so much on my flaws and just having really low self-esteem in general. But, your positive energy makes me realize that I _can_ do this. I'm going to stop making myself miserable and let myself be happy and proud of who I am. Oh, and I'll tell my inner critic to shut the f**k up, as you said in a video 😊

Asking whether a person wants to do problem-solving, or just needs to vent and be heard, is great, and helpful. But what do you do, once someone answers "I just need to vent" for the HUNDREDTH TIME? It's like, "Do you value anything about me besides my ability to listen to you non-stop?"
