Special guest Preston Sprinkle delivers a message on the posture of Jesus and explains parallels between how Jesus related to Zaccheaus and how believers today are called to relate to LGBTQ+ people.
Preston Sprinkle is a biblical scholar, speaker, podcaster, and New York Times bestselling author. He has proven to be one of the best communicators on sharing biblical truths in conversations regarding homosexuality, violence, alcohol, and others. He has written several books, including People to Be Loved: Why Homosexuality Is Not Just an Issue and Living in a Gray World: A Christian Teen's Guide to Homosexuality.
Focus Scripture // Luke 19:1-10 (ESV)
"He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Sermon Highlights
If Jesus would have called Zacchaeus out, He would have been true and just. But Jesus said I MUST stay at your house.
Even if it meant sacrificing His own status, Jesus wanted to get to know Zacchaeus. He wanted to hear his story.
This is how us, as believers, are called to love all people.
Embody the presence of God here on earth.
Embody God's truth and grace.
Our truth will not be heard until our grace is felt.

Hey friends! It was so great worshiping with you this morning! I just wanted to make a few clarifying comments about my message. First, not everything I said about Zacchaeus should be mapped on LGBTQ people. When I was talking about Zacchaeus, I was talking about Zachaeus. I used some language that accurately describes Zachaeus but does not at all apply to all or even some LGBTQ people. My main point was comparing how religious people VIEW tax collectors and how many modern Christians VIEW LGBTQ people. Second, I was primarily focusing on the church and the non-churched/religious LGBTQ community. But many LGBTQ/SSA people are religious and some are even theologically "conservative" (for lack of better terms). In other words, I don't want to imply that we should have an "Us vs. Them" posture. 83% of LGBTQ people were raised in the church and 51% leave the church after they turn 18. That still leaves millions of church goers who experience same-sex attraction and/or are wrestling with their gender identity. We talked about all of this in much more detail at the 2 1/2 hour evening seminar.

I'm a LGBTQ Christian Person. I follow all your content. We disagree on a lot (and also agree on some things), but it is consistently a pleasure to listen to you interview someone. You are unconditionally kind to the people that I imagine it is not easy for you to be unconditionally kind to. You listen to them and ask about their lives with curiosity even though I imagine your mind is screaming with Bible references you want to use to refute them. Your words have informed how I treat people who condemn me or what I do. I wish the LGBTQ community would reach out to the people who disapprove of them the most with kindness. There is such power in a little kindness - especially when the person receiving it knows it is not deserved. It would change many hearts I think. Like you, the more I am alive, the more I think that how we treat the people there is enmity in our hearts towards is the measure of who we are as disciples of Jesus. Anyways, wanted to say thank you. If you ever have people piling on you or being unkind to you, or you need to vent, please message me. I would help however I could.
