Birth and Early Life
Thirumalisai Alwar was born under extraordinary circumstances. It is said that he was born to Bhargava Maharshi and his wife Kanakangi, but abandoned as an infant due to his unusual appearance, as he was born without limbs. However, divine intervention came in the form of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, who bestowed upon him normalcy and vitality. Found by a tribal couple, he was raised with love and care, growing up into a devoted seeker of truth.
From an early age, Thirumalisai displayed remarkable intelligence and dispassion for worldly life. He sought spiritual knowledge from various sources, delving into different philosophies like Buddhism and Jainism, before ultimately finding his calling in the path of Bhakti (devotion to God).
Devotion to Lord Vishnu
Thirumalisai Alwar's devotion to Lord Vishnu was unparalleled. His life was filled with numerous miraculous events that demonstrated the depth of his connection with the Divine. His verses, found in the Naanmugan Thiruvandhadhi, a collection of 96 hymns, are filled with profound expressions of his unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu. These hymns focus on the supremacy of Lord Vishnu, urging all to surrender at His feet for salvation.
One of the most famous miracles associated with Thirumalisai Alwar is the story of his encounter with King Pallava. When the king requested Thirumalisai to restore the youth of his elderly queen, the Alwar, by the grace of Lord Vishnu, rejuvenated her. However, this led to complications when the queen, in her newfound youth, expressed interest in remarrying. To resolve the situation, Thirumalisai prayed to Lord Vishnu, and by His divine will, both the king and queen were returned to their original age.
