I LOVE Lemon Balm as a tea. I hope you get the chance to try some!
If you like herbs and "weeds" you might like my two books, The Weed Handbooks Volume 1 and 2. If you would like to learn about herbs, check out the website danusirishherbgarden.com/for my herb courses - dates are tentative at the moment but hopefully they will run. Alternatively, have a look at my courses on the Udemy platform - www.udemy.com/course/herbal-s... and

If you would like to help me to plant more trees and shrubs any donation will be welcome and those over 10euros will receive a natural gift from the garden. Thank you SO MUCH to those who have donated already, it is very much appreciated. Thanks to Rozanna for letter!

Does anyone else find it amazing how certain distinctive flavors re-occur amongst wildly varied plants? For example, the licorice flavor we find in licorice, anise, and tarragon, or the lemon of lemon balm, lemon verbena, and (of course) lemons. These are naturally-occurring plants, not the result of careful crating like pineapple or chocolate mint. It just fascinates me.

Herbal teas are wonderous to be sure. I love to make Athelas Tea, also known as Kingsfoil or Asëa Aranion in these parts. My Great Grandmother was a herbalist in the mountains of Tennessee. To clarify for us folks on the US side of the pond, bee balm is not the same as lemon balm. Bee balm here is also called Bergamot and Oswego tea. The tea became popular during the pre Revolutionary War years as well as after when tea shipments from England were taxed (without representation input from the colonies which is also the reason coffee suddenly became popular here). It grows wild all around New York and has an attractive purple flower that looks nice in any garden. Catnip is another member of the mint family which is now reappearing in the wild in our 4/5 climate (lemon balm has yet to reappear ) and also makes a nice medicinal tea but my farm cats love to roll and play in it so I leave it to them. Love your videos, thanks so much for posting.

To clarify, Melissa is the Latin name wherever you live. Different places around the country, around the world have local names for plants which can lead to confusion. Here, Lemon Balm is also known as Bee Balm or Balm. We also have Borage which the bees absolutely love but it is different altogether and not called Bee Balm as far as I know. We do not have Bergamot or Oswego. The study of plants and herbs is never ending and ever fascinating. Thanks for your information.

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Oswego is the name of the county in New York where the citizens made bergamot tea popular in response to the tea import tax. Yes, herb history around the world is fascinating. My Amish neighbors introduced me to chewing plantain to make a spit poultice to bring alleviate swelling, itching, and infection from bug bites. Here I was thinking it was just a lawn weed! They were visiting when they offered the info after seeing me in obvious distress from a new bite on the top of my hand and I felt immediate relief after applying the plantain.

Gillian Roberts I dry herbs by cutting the stalks with the leaves on and putting them in paper bags in the dark. This works if the weather is dry. You can also tie several stalks together and hang them in a closet, heads down. You can put several bunches here and there on one clothe hangar. In a few days they should be dried. You can tell if they crush between your fingers. If the leaf just rolls it’s not dry enough. When dry, rub the leaves off of the stems and keep leaves in an airtight container in the dark. Air dried herbs last longer than heat dried herbs and keep more of their oils. To heat dry you can spread just the leaves on cloth or paper towels and put them in the oven at the lowest possible heat, just until they crumble.

My favorite herb. Used to grow it in Norway, the UK and now in California. It's my go-to herb for soothing the nerves. Definitely a much underrated herb, in my opinion. Keeping a lid on while it steeps (like you did) is a good idea, as it helps keeping the oils in the leaves from evaporating. If the lid is covered with little droplets, just shake them into the infusion before drinking. :)

For the one has nerve damage my husband has it around his stomach, which make him impossible to wear anything, he found a temporary solution, at least to dress up and go out sometimes. He wrapped himself with kitchen plastic wraps ,so because it’s tied, avoid the friction,so he can wears a shrirt and go out. Only one pain when he put in on, and an other when he takes off. Off course, he is very brave.

I grew lemon balm for the first time last year. I love anything lemon. I was do disappointed as I thought it had died over winter. Imagine my excitement a couple days ago when I noticed the sprouts I was about to "weed out" was the lemon balm coming back!! This year I got some lemongrass. Mmmm! I love chewing on the blades of lemon grass. I cannot wait to harvest both and make tea. I was amazed their lemony flavors do not need sweetening. 💛

Last night I researched lemon balm as a friend and a cousin both broke out in shingles this week and asked for recommendations. Then your video popped up. I'm grateful to have found a kindred spirit. Like the other mints, lemon balm can be eaten raw. I've put them in smoothies as a fresh green, the only mint I've used more is spearmint, because of its availability. The mints are frost-sensitive so they cut back in the late fall but come back the next spring.

Lemon Balm grows radically wild in my yard here, in Oregon, in the US. It literally takes over everything, so, when I first moved in, I grabbed some from my grass and moved it into a safe spot in my garden ... just sort of spattered about. In this way I can manage it and use it liberally. I love it. ❤️❤️

be aware that, like mint, this plant can spread in the garden, so best for raised beds, tubs of planters or in an area that is mowed .I have it near my front door, but I weed what around it so it doesn't get out of hand, but in 5 years I may with i had it in a container LOL - it self sows freely so remove flowers before it before to seed. and dig around plant edges to avoid root spreading. I am in US zone 6-7 - it can be a spreader, but such lovely to just crush a leaf as I come in the house

Wishing you a beautiful Sunday from Portugal...I have a special place in my heart for lemon balm as well... and treasure the big patch I have that pops up in front of my raspberries every year. I even have a little clump right beside by my front door which I implore my partner not to strim when he cleans back the grass...although it smells glorious strimmed it is a beautiful reminder to me that she is back in full glory... as it's not really a herb I use dried as I have so much lemon verbena for winter use. Thank you for the reminder about the anti viral properties...I always think of the nerve aspects first. My brew this week for spring is also lemon balm.. with nettles and plantain and a sprinkling of shepherd's purse and cleavers also added to the pot... 💚🌱✨️

For anyone wanting to plant this, it does spread (easily for me) so like mint, pot it or keep it in check if you need. Seems to do well in sun or some shade (perennial but dies back in winter zone 6b).
