How can music convey our passions and make a difference? In this talk, classical pianist Umi Garrett performs several of her favorite pieces while discussing how music serves as both a form of communication and a way for her to help others.
Hailed by The Huffington Post as “a budding musical genius,” Umi first made her public broadcast appearance on NBC’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show at the age of 8. A Young Steinway Artist, Umi is studying with Professor John Perry and Mrs. Mina Hirobe-Perry, and recently performed in a solo charity concert at Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin, Germany to collaborate with the International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War, and a 9-concert tour with Symphonia Boca Raton in Florida. In addition to performing with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Symphony Orchestra in China, and many more orchestras, Umi also gave solo recitals in a total of nearly 60 cities throughout the United States just between 2013-2015. Umi has also received first prize at the 13th Osaka International Music Competition in Japan and in the Chopin International Competition Chopin Plus in Budapest, Hungary, and her second album, “Music in Life” was released by Naxos Japan.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

TEDx Thank you so much for bringing these musicians to the public eye. There are a number of musical geniuses throughout the world that most people have never and will never be seen. That is until you have shared their genius on RU-vid that many millions can see and hear. I can only hope that people will keep playing instruments other than guitars and synthesizers which seems to be the major part of what we hear and see in today's world. I keep hoping that someday big bands and orchestras will once again make the music scene. Thank you again so very much!

Oh my, Umi, you are beyond magnificent! I am so pleasantly surprised to hear you are Japanese American. When I was 12, 13 & 14, I sat beside Donna Mukoyama in band. We both played clarinet; so, she was a wonderful classmate & a great inspiration for me. Now I study piano, so you too are a great inspiration. Thank you for your spirit of love, joy & excellence for classical music!

Yes, but they need to provide a good piano, in this video the piano is very bad, old, not tuned, with a piano like that even the famous Horowicz or Franz Liszt would sound bad. Some people criticize this video but every pianist of high quality like Umi need a high quality piano. IN other videos people can watch how she plays with a good piano. Umi has been accepted in the top place to study piano, like the Everest for pianists (Julliard), so she is now at the top of the world.

Hi Umi, you have blossomed into a fine concert musician and I am full of admiration for your accomplishments in music. I think I have already commented on this but I am going to reinforce the point again. I'm sure you are aware of the Labeque sisters? Well, I have heard it said of them that wherever they play, they insist on being provided with two matching German Steinway concert grands. Now Umi, the piano you used for the above performance was not up to the demands of a pianist of your musical stature. It was a bad instrument tonally and it was wildly out of tune. The Labeque sisters demand the best and you should emulate them and at the very least insist that the piano is tuned and voiced on the day of the performance, and any pedal noise should be eliminated. Be very particular, If you find the piano is not at its best, make a fuss about it. That way, you will be helping to raise standards. I did not find that cheap little grand very enjoyable. It did not do justice to your performance. I have been a piano tuner / technician for years and have worked for lots of world famous concert musicians and entertainers, and they are fussy and I don't mind at all. But I always gave them my undivided attention and enjoyed the challenge of creating an even singing tone from bottom A to top C. I have tuned pianos for recording artists, and loved the atmosphere of the recording studio even though it was very pressurised at times. I was voted "Piano tuner of the tour" by one group! A certain concert pianist said "The piano was excellent, in fact I would say, better than most!" One of the funniest things happened when I restored and tuned a really old derelict piano in a local grammar school assembly hall. A visiting choir gave a recital that evening. According to the Head of the Music Department, after the recital, he didn't hear any comments about the choir, but everyone was saying how well the piano sounded! Best wishes, take care, Bernard.

Sorry, I don't know speak english ヾ(´▽`;)ゝ

Le traduzco el comentario. I also thought the same thing. Her experience makes for exceptional talent, yet when she plays she does not observe certain basic things such as tempo and pitch, which are really important when executing a piece. Umi is indeed talented, but she is not conveying the piece in its entirety as she is totally absorbed in concentration when performing. Of course these are pieces that are played fast and are technically demanding, yet, in an attempt to avoid getting lost in her technique, she in fact ends up mixing up everything and this detracts from the joy of listening to the piano.

sam333 That's how it goes with virtually every extremely young prodigy. They "pop" when they are very young and become exponentially not as good later. She is different, I think, and she's really good. I'm praying she'll make it. She's incredibly, incredibly strong. I'm worried that she has no siblings or extended family support which will become very much more important later on. She's already showing the strains of the pressure. I hope for so much good to happen for her. "It's all about luck, and who you know!" Best, Umi
