The power of Soviet Air Force 1939-1945 [HD 1080p]

In July of 1940, under a year before Germany attacked, the Soviet Union began a further re-organization of its forces. Squadrons that formerly had 20-30 planes were put together to form 60 plane regiments. Three to five of these regiments formed an air division. Along with this change was it was planned to upgrade existing planes in the force to their newest models. Progress was slow with the re-organization and the upgrades however, and by June 22, 1941 when Germany invaded, the process was only 20% completed.
In the first two days of the invasion Germany destroyed 2,500 Soviet aircraft. Many were destroyed on the ground. Others were destroyed by poor tactics. Soviet bomber wings tried to attack without fighter escort. When threatened, bombers formed tight wedges and fighters formed defensive circles.
In April 1942, Lieutenant General Alexander Novikov took command of the Red Army Air Force. He ordered that all air power be consolidated, from the individual ground units to which it was connected, into one unified force. It was around this time as well that the factories that were moved east of the Ural Mountains began full production, pumping out roughly 1000 planes a month.
This reconstitution and increased production made the Soviet air force formidable again but so did tactical advancement. "Loose pairs" began to prevail over standard formations with planes working in tandem, or one plane covering while the other attacked. Bombers began to be escorted. Four bombers would be escorted by up to ten fighters. When fighters escorted ground attack craft they split into two groups. A group that flew with the formation and a group that flew high above and about half a mile (800M) ahead to scout for enemy patrols.
By 1945 the Red Army Air Force had 17 air armies each with 2 fighter divisions, 2 fighter-bomber divisions, a night bomber regiment, a reconnaissance squadron and a liaison squadron.

I was thinking about that. we heard very little of the soviet air force during ww2 while we heard many stories of dogfights between the air powers of the other factions. between the RAF and the Luftwaffe or the Americans and the Imperial Japanese. and one thing is clear. we hear very little of Mussolini's Italy.

@@EngPheniks 80 percent of the luftwaffe was battling the soviet air force in 1942 and onwards. Despite being obliterated in 1941, thanks to stalin the air force was rebuilded with more il-2, la's, yaks, pe-2s, il-4s and tu-2s. Much of these planes were great in the roles they performed and we're a opponent that even 80 percent of the luftwaffe could not beat. The allies only faced a small fraction of the luftwaffe.

We’d all be speaking German if it wasn’t for the soviets. As an American I have no shame in saying that. Millions upon millions sacrificed. I guarantee the US or UK would not be able to sustain the levels of loss that the Soviet Union suffered. Of course the US played it’s part and we played it well, but again, there is no way we would have sacrificed 30-40 million people.

Are there any examples of Russian World War Two aircraft flying today? I've seen other Allied and Japanese aircraft at airshows, etc, but no Soviet aircraft. They built some badass planes and it'd be a shame if there weren't any left flying. And I'm not asking about aircraft procured on the Lend/Lease Program.

Asteris Giotas and yet it was not enough. The soviet air force took a bad beating on June 22nd due to a very large number of reasons. The main reason however is not even being “ill-prepared”, iow one must define what “prepared” even means. Having the resources and equipment while most airstrips are undergoing maintenance is not what I would call “prepared”. Moreover, stubborn policies of Stalin such ignoring the warnings of Churchill, his military advisers and purges of soviet leadership are mostly responsible for the beating the Air Force took early on in the war.

They chose the terrorizing cannon over the Machine gun as there main asulting weapon. The Allies mostly had machine gun fire as there #1 weopon. Where the Soviets preferred the deadly cannon fire as the main killer.

@marocho129 3 года назад
I'm sorry to ruin your illusion but 20mm cannon was also one of the main armaments of German planes too. And most of the later produced Spitfires as well as most of the allied planes produced in larger numbers which didn't get the 20mm cannon, like P-47 or P-51 were armed with 12.7 .50 cal M2 Browning, which, if you think about it, isn't that much less terorizing or deadly than the 20mm cannon.
