The simulation presents the same T-10M turret impact as the "Centurion vs T-10M" video, however the shooter is now the Chieftain, and the range has been extended from 500m to 1830m...

On paper, the Chieftain was arguably the best tank in NATO when it entered service, featuring modern systems, a hunter-killer capability, and a powerful cannon (the sub-calibre projectile's kinetic energy actually exceeded that of the T-64's 125mm 3BM9 APFSDS). However, the tank suffered from reliability issues and a troublesome engine, as well as being produced in significantly less numbers than any Soviet tank.
The simulation shows the same impact point as the Centurion video, with the exact same materials used for all components (as L15 is just a larger version of L52). The simulation therefore serves as a direct comparison between the British 105mm and 120mm cannons.

While many say the Chieftain used 2-piece ammunition (which is close enough to correct), it actually had a third part which ignited the propellant, but this didn't have to be reloaded every shot. Afaik this was a 10 round clip of rifle-like cartridges, similar to blanks, but I'm not certain. Would be curious to hear the specifics from someone though!

Just did the survey before about if the Chieftain could pen the T-10M at different ranges, of which I guesses the 1800m mark so I reckon I guessed rather well, also keep up these animations, really enjoy them, especially with the voice over now

in war thunder after the APDS changes, most APDS can't penetrate spaced armor to the extent, that a Panzer III M getting hit by a Conqueror on the front with the spaced armor (50mm RHA and 20mm HHA if i am correct) at around 20-30 deg angle, it just does not penetrate. Could you simulate that?

Conqueror? That will just bulldoze through the whole tank and exit through the rear plate, even T-34's 76mm cannon could handle that with no problem, i think this guy even simulated 2 pounder hitting that armor layout, it penetrated with little struggle For comparsion, Conqueror irl could easily penetrate IS-7 turret, Panzer 3 will be like a piece of paper for it's 120mm APDS

@@thezig2078 not again.... this whole thing of "xy tank is worse than others because yx war" is so idiotic. i am not saying that soviet/russian tanks are any better than nato tanks, but it is comes down to the tactics. you know, turkish leopard 2s are exploding the same way, ans a soviet t-72... if you send a tank into a city without infantry support, then it can bet the newest and best in the world, it will get rekt the same way like a ww1 tank

You've gotten better at this, info and dim accuracy, though the APDS in question here didn't mushroom that hard. It's a little more tougher than that.

It is actually similar to a rifle clip (I'm looking for pics of one but can't find it). They are very small rounds that just have the propellant for ignition of the main charge.

There's a 10 round magazine of vent tubes loaded into a slot in the breech which are used to initiate the propellant charges. You can think of it as a magazine of relatively small electrically fired blank cartridges used to ignite the main charge. The same system is used on the Challengers.

@@ifax1245 It is a tongue in cheek comment on War Thunder's horrid handling of British ammunition or late Russian vehicles performing far too well. Though at this point, all SV/APDS is inaccurate. In the game, the shell will either shatter, bounce or be absorbed.

Had an idea for a hypothetical situation... say it's the early 1960s and China sends their J-5 jets(basically a mig 17) against Japan's defense force and attack the Type 61 tank with the jet's 23mm or 37mm cannons, at a downward angle against the hull or turret front (or the roof as well, to be fair)? Edit: I mean, it would be a situation that could have transpired, and the type 61 was fairly thin armor compared with western tanks, and China probably would have attacked Japanese tanks with their attack planes, I think.

T10M had 250 mm turret armor, unlike T10A and T10B which both had 200 mm.

Do you make explosion simulations? I've been wondering about this recently: which one is more powerful, a 30mm HE round or an average hand grenade? This would be an interesting comparison.

30mm HE round wins by a very significant amount. The explosive force of hand grenades are routinely and highly over estimated by media and the public, when in reality their blast amounts to being enough to kick up a small cloud of dust and perhaps a very small crater. Most of their lethality comes from the fragmentation, though that is not to say the explosion itself is entirely non-lethal. For example, in order to entirely neutralize even a relatively smaller room of combatants, a breaching force may use more than just several grenades before entering.

1:01 I guess that's where the fatal flaw lies, the brass case propellent is a bit more protected while the combustible powder bags on the Chieftain would probably detonate from penetrating shots.

Not the case, the opposite in fact due to the way that the bagged charges are stowed. Yes a brass case wouldn't ignite if it was hit by sparks and cinder, but it could still go up if penetrated. The Chieftains powder bags were stored in armoured bins around the fighting compartment that contained a 'wet stowage' water solution that if the bins were penetrated, would douse the bags in the mixture - severely reducing the chance that they would combust, or at least delaying their explosion in the event the that the armoured stowage was penetrated.

T10M also has combustible casing. Actually, I think cheiftan does not have combustible casing.

You would be wrong. The T-10M used the same two piece ammunition that all previous Soviet heavy tanks with the 122mm used. The Chieftain in literally all literature is referenced as using combustible casings.

"Combustible Casing" is technically accurate but somewhat misleading as it implies there was a solid casing, whereas the Chieftain used bag charges.

@@MacSalterson Russian sources note that, they are in the Soviet 1976(or 1975 drrn) handbook on tank ammunition. IIRC only APDS and HEAT were issued with combustible cases.
